Water Rescue

Quick thinking:
  • Chicago police reported that they rescued a man from Lake Michigan after he became trapped while trying to save his dog from the partially frozen water on Sunday.

Officers from Lincoln Police District stepped onto the ice to help the man around 1 p.m., police said.

The man said in a statement released by police that his recently adopted 9-month-old American Eskimo mix "was very excited and got away from me, ran down" to Foster beach.
There's video at the Tribune link. Lucky dog. Luckier owner. Nice job Officers.

OT:
Even though Officer Weather will be pulling a double shift in the next few days there are still people (and folks) to shoot, senior citizens to mug, corners to defend, insults to avenge, cars to jack, coats to steal, snitches to silence and a host of other reasons that the local jagoff will use to justify leaving the crib.
So.... in spite of a forecast of record cold temperatures in the next 24-72 hours I predict there will be at least one J/O who will brave the elements to venture outside in order to shoot someone.

Chicago's New Motto:"
"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays our shootaz from the swift completion of firing off a couple of rounds."

I cringe every time I see an officer or fireman’s life endangered to rescue an animal from frozen waters. It is foolish to put first responders in that kind of danger and is a waste of money and resources.

Great job Sgt. and officers you definately saved that man ! Every district that borders the lake or river should have a ring buoy or throwable line bag in a supervisors car if not every car. It isn't expensive and can really help save someone in the water. This would also prevent officers from falling in themselves and also becoming a victim . Of all the stupid insignificant things they send us to training for , this would be a plus like LEMART and using an AED. Most beat cars will be on the scene well before the CFD divers.

Great job, great story and coverage.
There was an incident where a teen fell through thin ice and 2 Toledo PO’s tried to make a rescue, fell, through this the ice as well.
Kid was saved, PO’s cold and wet saved themselves too.
Bottom line - the Toledo PO’s stated they weren’t trained for water rescue nor equipped.
So beware and prepared of what you’re delving into whether rushing into water, fire or dark buildings.

Was it last week or two 2 knuckleheads jumped into the lake up in Waukegan, one still hasn’t been recovered, then couple days later some nitwit at North Av beach?
This is happening and reported on these days more and more. Goofs doing the polar plunge unsupervised.
What’s missing here is the blatant idiocy of the individual walking on ice without a clue.
Where’s the parents?
Where’s the schools?
They have no problem teaching and promoting biased social justice reforms but nothing about public safety?

Bet these morons won’t be traversing upon ice anymore, but peer pressure will always keep them hating the police.

==========
That is a pretty common practice for 457b and 401k plans. The funds first get deposited into an escrow like account where it earns some tiny amount of interest until it gets to the regular investment account.

I don't know why this is done but it is so common that there may well be a good reason for doing so that does not involve trying to cheat you out of a tiny amount of interest.

Winnetka police rolled up to Edward Burke, Jr.’s home on Friday, June 29, 2018 last year for a domestic battery call. Burke’s wife told dispatchers he was “extremely intoxicated, naked, acting violently and destroying furniture.” Dispatchers were told he had two loaded firearms on the first floor.
The police report says Burke’s wife injured her arm falling after he pushed her and said she feared for her safety.
Under the terms of his bond, Burke was ordered to turn over the two pistols and his FOID card and ordered not to have contact with the victim.

Then Winnetka Police made the decision to file a report stating that Burke posed a “clear and present danger” and asked for the state to revoke his FOID card. A detective signed off on the form, but before that form was processed by state police, the case was dismissed and Burke’s 9 mm pistols were returned.

People don’t realize how dangerous the City Lakeshore is this time of year.

I’m not piling on people. A couple of years ago I almost found myself in the water on a day like this.

It was 6am and I was walking along the lake from North Ave Beach, south.

I was well away from the water on the bike path. But, when I got to the bend at E. Lake Shore Dr., there was a narrow foot-wide worn path around the bend and about 25 yards of 3-5% concrete grade on my left covered in ice.

I should have just stopped at the Mich Ave / Oak St walkway under LSD, but I was kind of in to my morning walk, and figured I could navigate the path around that E. LSD lakefront bend.

When I’m at the very corner of the bend in the mid-point of it, a surge of water laps all the way up to the concrete wall of the bend. It totally covers the narrow pathway I’d been walking on in front of me and behind me. It also comes up to my ankle, icing up my shoes and immediately freezes the narrow worn path all around me.

Being at the outermost part of that curve it’s equidistant to safety. So, I assess there’s no sense in turning around, especially given I might slip and fall in doing so.

Just as I’m thinking that, I move carefully forward realizing it’s just a matter of time before another surge of water comes against the wall.

What happens?

I slip and fall.

Now I’m in the shit.

There’s no way I can get up. I’ll just slip and run the risk of skidding down that grade over more ice, and ultimately in to the lake the more I fight to get back up to the narrow path adjacent east of LSD.

On all fours I crawl very very slowly to get about 50 or so yards to where I can grab a steel handle to pull myself up.

It’s very tiring and I’m making very slow progress and growing terrified of the next water surge that will come and freeze my pants at the knees and making for zero friction, potentially causing me to slip away from where I am down the grade and in to the lake.

It’s 6am and nobody but me is out there, and that surge is coming eventually.

That’s when I hear a voice in my head say, “Oh shit, you’re in some trouble. But don’t lose you’re shit. Just stay calm.”

And just at that moment, coming up behind me is a guy in one of those small John Deere golf cart-like vehicles with a plow on it. He’s not plowing he’s just out there.

He sees me, and makes his way toward me. I raise my hand to have him stop, because I’m afraid the weight of that cart and given how slick it is will send him right in to the lake.

But he either just thinks I’m waiving to him or he just keeps coming.

He pulls up beside me opens the right side door and I pull myself in the vehicle.

I’m in shock I’m in the vehicle, but worried about sliding in to the lake in the vehicle. I thank him and we continues on. I get out about 50 yards up the way.

I didn’t find myself in the water like this man did, but I’m pretty sure eventually I would have and it would have been the end.

That guy saved my life. I tried to find out who the man was the next day, but nobody at the Park District no. I called could help.

If anyone knows a contact for the park district office that works that location, I’d appreciate that number.

I want to thank that guy. I’m pretty sure he saved my life.

We both were given a miracle, especially that guy and his dog.

Ok so the guy that was supposedly a victim of a hate crime has some intriguing parts to his story

1. Who goes walking around at 0300 hours in 5 degree weather with only a sweater; No jacket? Uh huh

2. You didn’t want to report the hate crime but your buddy convinced you to do so. Ok. Go on

3. You leave to noose around you neck to show the police and refuse to take it off until they see it on your neck. Go on very intriguing story.

4. You say the guys said “this is MAGA country” while beating you to TMZ, yet forget to tell the police that very important fact. Hmmmm

5. You’re a “big star” who could order anything via grub hub yet go to a gross Subway for a sammich. Ok check

6. You can’t describe the offenders at all yet you fought with them, were taunted by them, and had a noose put around your neck by them. Sounds legit to me.

That was a fabulous story. Maybe we can incorporate that to an episode. That would be awesome

1/29/2019 11:11:00 AM

Years ago the Department put the bouys and lines in all the beat cars that ajoined the lake, they disappeared in a matter of days. Guess some people thought they might look better in their personal boats than sitting in the trunk of squad car available to save a person's life. The Department never replaced them. Sad commentary about of some of the people who work on the job

Very heroic fast & kind rescue from Chicago's finest, thank you.

Since media didn't know, the hero police officers are from the 20th district located on the west side of the street on north Lincoln avenue.

Yep, this is going to turn out like many of the stories of crazy attacks on individuals. It's going to be found to be made up to bolster his career and an embarrassment for the LGBQT community. The "star" will then throw out a PTSD claim and all will be forgiven.

Idiots fishing on the lakefront and their
little yappy-mutt leashed to a folding chair
jumped in to get at some ducks paddling by.

Took his ass straight to the bottom...

Multiple calls to 911 with bad locations
because they didn't know where they were.

The minor child was a basket case of course.

A district unit was dispatched to "do something"
until the Marine Unit got there.

District unit shows up and the screaming started
about "Aren't YOU supposed to go get OUR dog?
We were still seeing bubbles but YOU took too long!"

Y'all can ponder that for a bit...

They were on the cell with other family members.
"Yeah the cops are here but they ain't doin' shit..."

Nice if a recovery was actually made.

Shove Fido's wet and dead ass right through
their mail slot, heat sealed in a property bag.

The shit Policemen have to put up with.

Those officers are bad-ass. I take my hat off to them. The Grim Reaper was walking the lakefront that day, and those officers sent him packing empty-handed.

Great job, officers. Makes me proud to count myself among the ranks of the CPD.

While politicians, prosecutors and judges scheme and lie and steal and plot how to despoil or persecute officers, and criticize officers' every last fart from the safety of time and distance after the fact, the men and women of the CPD are still out there making a difference, while the schemers definitely do not have the courage or strength to be out in the cold saving lives.

Body cam video revealed interesting comments. One officer (behind the guy in front?) yelling to the victim to grab the loop of the leash and pull himself up. Another guy (guy in front?) tells him to stick his arm through the loop and grab his arm with the other hand.

One guy doesn't understand hypothermia. The other does. By this time the victim is losing control of his extremities. Possibly even his thought processes. He could be having trouble understanding.

Just something to remember about hypothermia.

Hey YOU BIG DUMMY,

Don’t you realize that it doesn’t matter how many officers are in the marine unit if they’re downtown and something happens up north or south. If they can’t get there in time they’ll just be doing a recovery. At these temps they’d never make it in time. If they were serious they’d decentralize, but that would make sense.

Not so fast! For the last 2 years I have seen innumerable roving bands of wild-eyed, hairy, mouth-breathing, drooling, grunting, knuckle-dragging, red-hat wearing and noose-wielding bands of backward, light-skinned, sub-human like beings roaming the downtown area looking for victims of color. They are everywhere!

Note: For the terminally humorless, the previous paragraph is loaded with sarcasm.

It is the idiot dog owner who caused it all. He should receive a bill for all the city services rendered.

But, OTOH, could you stand there while the dog went down for the last time, all the time knowing you could save or could have saved the dog?

1/29/2019 02:02:00 PM

I would definitely let the dog go down.

Are you saying you would risk your life and your family's well-being for a dog?

Are you saying that a dog is worth the risk to leave a widow with fatherless children?

You're an idiot.

Negligence to have 10 new marine unit officers in training since June 4th , and not to be involved in daily marine unit operations with veteran officers. This unit is down to minimal manpower with aging officers and it's going to get busier with more idiots on the ice this weekend with warmer temperatures. These 10 people along with a 5 man training crew have been pretty much out of the day to day operations for almost 8 months , because they go to near north training facility Mon thru Fri with weekends and holidays off. With temperatures warming up this weekend there will be more calls of people on the ice and this is a valuable part of training they are sure to miss out on , just like all the boat training they missed the last 8 months. In 8 months they haven't set foot on a boat except for a 2 day ride by a now retired officer . Two days in 8 months !!!! That's like going to the range every day and not shooting your gun ! It's time to move forward and end this nonsense, bring in an outside reputable agency to conduct any future training ! Sgt. E.B. gets a ZERO confidence vote from pretty much everyone but his Lt.

So Yeah . It all started with a former Sgt B.Fz He had the one instructor and trainees in a DOG but somehow was RDO for all the Packers game. Ran training for the nitwit bomb tech on overtime. Kept a second group ( 2 new guys , then got promoted) so back to 1 new officer in " training" for so long he could have become a surgeon. So EB took a page from BF.
But Sgt EB and his 1 instructor and 2 , second watch management guys, roll into a SS DOG just in time for summer. What happened when all days off city wide were cancelled for Memorial Day Weekend... Didn't see em on a boat . oh my bad I saw them on the A & A's NEVER on a boat. So at 8 months and 4 days there is no military dive training school that the new coppers would not have finished.
Cut em loose. let em learn and let them get there well deserved raise.
