Teachers Want What?

  • The Chicago Teachers’ Union recently released a draft contract chock-full of demands: smaller class sizes, salary increases, and more affordable benefits. But one “ask” that’s missing is for a right that educators in every other large urban school district in America enjoy — the right to live outside the city.

Why has CPS held on to its residency requirement since 1996? There’s the belief that teachers who live in Chicago will have more stake in their schools and communities, be more involved in school activities and be less likely to miss work or show up late. CPS also claims that schools benefit financially because educators spend their money in the city — money that eventually trickles down to schools.

Other cities, including Philadelphia and Milwaukee, had residency policies for decades but have rescinded them. Now, CPS is the only one of the 50 largest districts in our nation that requires residency for its educators. However, there’s a list of unfair exceptions.
And amazingly, the Slum Times is supporting their efforts. You think they'd support an effort to ship cops out of the city based solely on their coverage and Mope-rah's screeds.

Residency is meaningless to teachers. My wife teaches grade school on the northwest side. There’s another teacher on her floor that’s married to a fireman. The other 5 teachers on her floor have exemptions to live in the suburbs. So what’s the point in fighting against something that doesn’t matter.

I am tired of the CPS getting exemptions at all on residency if they are not extended to the rest of the City Employees.

Too many damn vehicles in Public School Employee Only Parking Lots without City Stickers, but if you go into a Police or Fire or other City Department Parking Lot, the only vehicles without a City Sticker on them are rental cars.

I have to register my license plate # and the serial # of the City Sticker every year with Finance.

I seem to remember the Chicago Teachers Union providing a "tool kit" re-educating children on the Laquan McDonald incident. Remember this was funded by C.T.U. by a professional development facilitator for the Chicago teacher's union Quest Center entitled "Teaching About Laquan McDonald". High School graduates cannot read at a 6th grade level but their minds are filled with hate and rage preparing them as human tools to be used in uprisings. Time for vouchers.

At least their union has the balls to address residency unlike Graham Crackers and the FOP. It's beyond time to do something about the out-dated residency rule here in Chicago for the Police (and all city workers). Every big city across America has done away with the out dated residency rule. And I'm also tired of hearing from selfish cops who are worried about their own property values. News flash; there will not be a mass Exodus! But we should all have a right to live where we want (including outside of Chicago) as long as we show up to work on time. Residency NEEDS to be rescinded, Chicago is becoming unlivable.

They also suck your pension up with gold braid provision.

They use their ability to strike to hold the city, mayor etc hostage for their often unrealistic demands. They are top heavy with non-teaching staff in their union. The student population has diminished but yet spending and budget has increased drastically.
While obviously there are many dedicated teachers within the system, those witnessed under the tutelage of that spoiled Karen Lewis should stfu and worry about, you know... "Daaaa CHILDREN!

There are a lot of teachers that live outside the city and they even tell people where they live. My guess is that they can’t find enough teachers so they really don’t care what they do. That being said most teachers in my neighborhood also smoke weed. Only the police need to follow the rules.

Not all teachers live in the city. There are some that apply for a waiver for a short time, but never reapply and remain unchecked. Then you have certain areas of education that CPS allows them to live outside, but are supposed to eventually move to the city. CTU doesn’t care, as long as they are paying dues. The hardcore rule seems to only really apply to members of CPD. Every other employee finds loopholes.

They can’t get other jobs teaching. Most (not all) CPS teachers did apply to other school districts and couldn’t make the cut, so they go with CPS, in hopes of eventually catching on someplace else. Although that rarely happens, CPS teachers usually don’t get hired in the suburbs.

The "new equality" according to the twisted, white-guilt liberal
progressive democrat nanny-statist collectivists...

"Parity"/"Equality" is the goal.

The goal is achieved by busting EVERYBODY that isn't "them"
down to a "common denominator."

Why do you think public education has been turned into
K-12 indoctrination centers where they fill young skulls
so full of feel-good mush?

Ask any high school senior if they've received a robust
block of instruction in Civics/Governance...

"Huh? Whohadsaidsump'n?"

It's ALL by design.

And to borrow a word, it's playing out bigly in America's
democrat-controlled large urban centers.

So now we're nearing a 3rd generation (from our count -
YMMV...) of squishy nitwits who simply cannot think
for themselves but we're all being told that they're
so smart and they're our nation's future.

And the absolutely most maddening thing?

Progressive Collectivist ideology is just a genteel
descriptor for Marxism/Communism... The same ideology
that snuffed out untold hundreds of millions of lives
way out there on foreign shores.

It has been, is and will continue to be a monumental
fail that is designed to burn public treasury, bring
about ruin and cost lives.

...But these lunatic m/fers INSIST that it can work
in America because America is "free" and "has so much."

We're quite sure that pile of human skulls at the
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Cambodia, if they could
talk, would have quite the story to tell about the
collectivist wet dream/nightmare for everybody else
that progressivism and others such really are.

Heh... The collectivists have racked up quite the
toll in the 20th Century.

No?

Now ponder all the deeply ugly shit that
has been/is being slid in place...

And it centers on the gradual peeling away of self
determination and the imposition of the government
as the all-knowing and benevolent father who dispenses
prizes, goodies and free-shit that really ain't free.

Heh...

The CTU says "rich people" are going to give them what
they want in this upcoming contract.

These m/fers and others like them are so damned cocksure
that they're going to run the table on the rest of every-
body else that they don't even bother with even feigning
to mask their true intentions anymore.

Just like their ACLU and politically/culturally weaponized
perpetual grievance industrial complex confréres.

There HAS to be a way to fight back and put a powerful bad
hurt on these corrosive, nation-hating, treasonous creatures
and finally lay them out for who and what they are and what
they're trying to do.

Police Like You Have No Friends.

I so know this won't be recieved well but facts are facts. Teachers spend a whole lot more time with the idiots then the police do. They can not tell the parents that they are idiots, they can not put their hands on a 10 or 18 yo punk that needs a slap. They, as well as the police, have idiots running the show. Is there one copper that has spent 40 hours a week stuck in a small room with way too many idiots that have been told since birth that they have rights & entitlements?
It was Daley who started the BS with the contracts. Promised something he failed to deliver.
I am aware of coppers who have bought dinner, diapers (for both babies and teenagers), electric, gas, shoes, coats, groceries, prom dresses, ect. I am aware of teachers who have done the same. I was once asked by a friend who is a teacher, to donate a few bucks to her school coat fund rather than Christmas or birhtday presents for her kids.
There was a time when we could say that teachers had a comfy little job, that day is long gone. Not only are they asked to parent, they are now being asked to police. Isn't there a debate going on regarding whether or not teachers should be armed?
I am sick of all the bad press the police get. There is nothing a copper does that is right in this twisted ass world. Read this blog and you can see that we fail in standing together any any one subject. I know that fat Karen & others dissed the police. Can we be better?
Can we start a revolution? If the police & teachers could step back from each others they might realize that we are fighting the same battle, politics.
If you a reading this and are the police and don't agree then take your kids out of school while saying thanks for the teachers who taught you how to read. If your a teacher reading this and don't agree then don't call the police when ole boy comes through the doors with a gun. If you don't call we won't come on too strong but we will be happy to drop paper when the dust settles.
It's the same shit on different sides of the street. Teachers can strike, we can be "hold me down squad I have a flat." Imagine a week or a month where both sides met in the middle. These garbage politicians might, maybe, just maybe, realize that it's time for change.
It is the teachers and the police who should be running things.

As best as I know, teachers were allowed to live outside the city at one time, but that was changed with a grandfather clause. I really do not think anyone looks in earnest at residency complaints. I have known many teachers who do not reside within the city limits. Will the Slum Times also support cops and fire fighters living outside the city? Those are all false arguments that the city uses to compel residency. The real reason is to keep the wages inside the city and keep certain neighborhoods stable.

The system is rigged in Illinois and Chicago to squeeze its citizens of every dollar possible. Total debt and unfunded pension liabilities at the city, county and state are so high, the systems are practically bankrupt now but most sheep are oblivious to the financial black holes. My advice? If at all possible, get out of Illinois. Find an exit plan. Otherwise you’ll be stuck, and you’ll be poor, shouldering the massive financial liabilities created by failed liberal economic policies.

I used to substitute teach full time before I got on CPD and I can tell you everything you said about being in the classroom is true. CPS,CPD - it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. We're liable and responsible for the actions of bunch of morons on the street every day; CPS is liable for a bunch of morons in the classroom every day. I have a ton of respect for both professions. A lot of times it feels like we're the only ones responsible. Everyone else gets a free pass for their behavior, and it's our fault when we can't "help" them.

We should support their efforts.

We're wanting the same things, aren't we?

A unified front, or at the very least precedent(s) for our contract.

The product turned out at CPS has little to do with teacher quality. Look what gets sent to them. Teachers are essentially babysitters, who are expected to keep passing these cretins year after year.

Then these people go onto "college" at the City Colleges, totally unprepared. There they take courses in how to make it in college. Few even go on to get their two-year degree, let alone go onto a four-year school.

While we're on the subject sure, give them "free" college at CCC. They get their money back when they graduate.

In the 80’s the CTU asked for 12% over 4 years. The Board countered with an immediate 7% raise. For some bookkeeping reason, the Board took the money from a pension tax levy fund; therefore they had to pay it on the pension. Net result to teachers was a 7% increase in take home. Take it out this pocket or take it out of. that pocket; it’s all the same.

or be overturned by federal courts which has been tried before, but maybe time to try again. Teachers cry that they do the best they can with what has been sent them, and there is a lot of truth to that. But, the same applies to the police officers. I can see in your haste to counter a false narrative, you add a false narrative of your own. The truth of the matter is the city offers more vacancies, the numbers. The same goes for the suburbs. I know many suburban cops who left to come to CPD and a few who went the other way . I know teachers who are in the city at Catholic schools because they like to teach and do not want the grief of the public school system. But, also, Chicago school system is very union controlled and they make it hard to get rid of problem teachers. The same goes for CPD. Also add politics to the mix.

Why not a compromise proposal? CPD officers must be residents for x number of years, and can move out after x years on the job living in the City. Mount Greenwood and the Northwest Side won't depopulate overnight. Most coppers won't relocate anyway, they like their neighborhoods and houses. Check out how many Philadelphia PD coppers moved out when they defeated their Residency requirement a few years ago. Less than 10 percent.

How about this, City? Coppers have the option to move out if they pay x dollars up front to waive the Residency requirement, in anticipation of lost tax revenue. The City can make a quick couple of million right away. Coppers can roll the Residency waiver fee into their mortgage for their big new homes in the suburbs.

There's gotta be a middle ground somewhere. It's not a question of "be careful what you wish for" (can't wait to hear that douchebag sound off), it's a question of having the choice. Not being a second-class citizen whose rights are circumscribed.

Lifting residency is a double edged sword. Try selling your home once a glut of homes all go on the market at the same time. How are you going to feel when that home you bought for 300k sells for 200k? Every action has a reaction and while we all look at the pluses of being able to leave, there are downsides. When Chicago is left as a ghost town and ends up like Detroit, watch how fast the Illinois constitution is changed and you get that letter saying your pension has been cut in half. Yeah fuck the city... But be careful what you wish for.

Not being a second-class citizen whose rights are circumscribed."

This sounds very workable. Why call someone a douchebag because he/she pointed out what might happen if residency was lifted in an unlimited mannor?
