MORE POPCORN!

  • Retiring Ald. Danny Solis (25th), the powerful chairman of the City Council’s Zoning Committee, has secretly recorded more than a dozen conversations with Ald. Ed Burke (14th) over the last two years, including at City Hall, to help federal investigators build their corruption case against him, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.

Those conversations include Burke meeting with individuals seeking actions by the city, a source familiar with the matter said.

Federal investigators have focused on Burke allegedly using his influence as chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee to drum up property tax appeal business for his private law firm.

Some of the meetings Solis recorded using an electronic listening device took place at the suite of offices reserved for the Finance Committee chairman on the third floor of City Hall.
For two years. In offices reserved for Burke to conduct "business." That looks like code for "extort money," doesn't it? So what do/did the feds have on Solis to turn him? Because we find it hard to believe he had an attack of conscience after twenty-three years and wanted to secure his place in Heaven.

And who else is on the wires? Solis was chairman of the City Council's Zoning Committee. Who has been pushing through a rather onerous building project against the very strenuous wishes of a sizeable portion of his constituency? Who has even resorted to filing complaints against these concerned citizens who hold city jobs, placing their work histories at risk for merely exercising their First Amendment Rights?
  • Alderasshole John Arena
And we've had more than a few hints that something is brewing up north. This could be getting very interesting.

Oh oh oh please lord God let that scumbag Arena get caught. He’s so arrogant and pompous that he would think he’s untouchable. Please let it be him. He is evil to the core. Finally someone is going after the corruption in Chicago that runs rampant and unchecked. The code of silence is with the politicians not the police.

I hope this breaks before the aldermanic election, so Toni Preckwinkle's pet politician, John Arena, is removed from office once and for all.

Why is it that Toni sponsors fundraisers for Arena?

Burke ought to be disbarred, every attorney in his firm censured and suspended for 2 years, and the firm itself broken up.

Every client that used that firm ought to have any Property Tax abatements rescinded, and be held accountable for ALL of the back taxes.

THEN, watch the proverbial SHTF and people will get pissed and start turning on each other...

You'll need a 50# sack of popcorn.

I said not interested in Arena so he hands me a glossy political palm card which reads "45 reasons to elect Alderman John Arena." What chutzpah! One of the 45 claims was he "funded police and fire pensions." I have already received about 3 mailings from Arena and he floods the area with them. A study was done on what was the most effective means of garnering votes and palm cards head the list. The other 3 candidate's better get on the ball as Arena has a good head start. I have received nothing from them.

They said he was caught using campaign money for personal expenses. Pretty routine. But weasel when you get caught and then offer someone up. Not like he was being sweated to give up tapes on his dealer. Nope, he just offered up Bure to save his skin. I don’t know how he avoids being charged though. Probably avoids jail but Burke’s stuff has nothing to do with his crime so immunity wouldn’t sort him out.
Not sympathetic to Burke. He overstayed his welcome. But to use the wires against him, they need Solis I’d think. If they rely on him they’ve got to explain how/why to jury. If they only prosecute Burke, not him, I think jury will be skeptical.
Of course, it looks like they’ve got case independent of Solis. Sounds like the guys being shook down went to their lawyer here who put Burke in check box with feds.
Be interesting to know what brought feds to Solis’campaign funds in first place? Who manage campaign fund?

Not a cop, but the FOP was simply WRONG to endorse Burke.

But wait you say, Burke did so much for us in the past? Doesn't matter.

But wait you say, Burke deserves the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, right? Sorry, that's a technical argument only lawyers will like. Right or wrong, Burke has already been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion.

The only thing the FOP has done by endorsing Burke is sully the reputation of honest and hardworking coppers.

So what should the FOP have done? NOTHING.

Don't endorse Burke. Don't endorse his opponents. Simply stay silent. And no one would have noticed.

At best, the FOP should have waited for a court of law to determine Burke's guilt or innocence. And then made an endorsement, if appropriate. But wait you say, that court decision might not come until long after the election? Too fucking bad.

Aldermen react

But some aldermen were angry at Solis — and worried about what the next shoe to drop would be. Others said nothing at all to the swarm of reporters lured to City Hall by the scent of fresh scandal.

“I was raised if you haven’t done anything wrong, you don’t have anything to worry about, but where I come from, if you wore a wire, someone’s gonna kick your ass,” Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th) said.

Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th) said he was not “brought up” to wear a wire on a colleague.

“If I was caught doing something wrong, I’d just take my punishment, deal with the consequences . . . and keep my mouth shut,” Sawyer said.

Ald. George Cardenas (12th) — an ally of Solis — said he would have preferred that Solis end his aldermanic career “honorably.”

“Jeez, what is the world coming to?” Cardenas responded when asked about one alderman wearing a wire as part of an investigation of another alderman.

Ald. Michelle Harris (8th) called Solis’ action “disheartening.”

“I try to think we are a family down here and we all work together,” said Harris, who like Solis, is a close ally of Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Typically, we respect each other. I’m a little uncomfortable about it.”

Ald. Carrie Austin (34th) said she was near tears after she learned of Solis’ actions.

“You don’t do that. You just don’t,” Austin said.

Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza (10th) said she was “shocked.”

“I don’t know what other people are thinking,” Sadlowski Garza said. “I have nothing to worry about.”

Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) noted that few people would volunteer to help federal officials investigate a friend or colleague.

“Most people don’t just generally call the FBI and say ‘Hey, how can I be an informant for you?’” Lopez said. “There’s usually something that pushes that, and only time will tell.”

Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) said he also didn’t understand what prompted Solis to wear a wire as part of the Burke investigation.

“Anyone who violates the public trust needs to be held accountable,” Reilly said. “The best way to avoid having to wear a wire is to stay out of trouble.”

Reilly is one of five aldermen who are running for another term unopposed. But Ald. Michele Smith (43rd) faces five challengers — and acknowledged the news that Solis wore a wire is not good for her chances at a third term, since it reminds voters of Chicago aldermen’s long and sordid history of corruption.

No shit, Solis didn’t just stumble on some conspiracy and run to the feds. The feds flipped him. Throw a dart at a corruption topic, you’ll find most, if not all, Chicago politicians in each. I have to actually tip my hat on this one. Good work, feds. Now if you go after the corrupt judges, ASAs, CPD brass and the whole political machine, you would right this ship. That will never happen though.

Where’s the uproar for Council Reform?
Any ideas for a consent decree for corrupt city hall and the patterns and practices?
Uncle lunch bucket Joe Fergie snoozing on the job or did he ignore a lot of this?

Both Prickwrinkle and ManDozer are sweating - big league.

It will be rather easy to tie Prickwrinkle to Section8’Arena (big promoter) and Section8’Arena to tax attorneys of whom ALWAYS give a little somethin-somethin in exchange for favorable council voting = Biuying Council floor votes.
Let’s hope Sterling Bay land grab development (they vote on that TIF drain today) is included in the mix.
We’ll see if the council pushes through this one, one of Rahm’s last big time deals, because MuskRat Tunnel is coming up soon.

Noticing how these affiliated candidates are only now on record of giving back that tainted donor money.
Giving money back kind of like a self initiated restitution. Steal money from a bank and giving it back negates a criminal case, it becomes a civil matter between debtor and creditor when the creditor enters an agreement to accept the terms of the thief.
These politicians are doing the same, washing their bank accounts of fraudulent acquisitions.
Donors will have to be party to the crime and willing to prosecute...and they won’t.

If the Fed were to tie Trump International to Burke and his cash coffers, it leads to Rahm and his refusal to return the donation he received. As the Beach Boy Brian Wilson sang...Wouldn’t it be nice.

On the wire wearing -
Gee Wally, didn’t Rahm abruptly announce he won’t seek re-election around the same time as Solis?
Yes sirree bob. It’s a long shot, but also “retiring” this year are Mayor Pro-Tem, Zoning and Finance Comm. Laurino (39), Airports Zalewski (23), hot head Munoz (22), Rahms right hand floor man O’Connor (40) is on the fence, and even little gutter rat Rep. Louie Gutierrez bowed out - all around the same time.

There’s a lot we don’t know and Council should not be passing anything related to spending, allocating or zoning until the FBI probe and it’s parties are brought to court. I’d like to know what Sterling Bay did to get Ald Hopskins to suddenly agree to the $900 mil TIF deal besides the nixing the soccer stadium around the proposed Lincoln Yards.

(FBI, please save some agents for Cook County.)

Will FOP be getting any refunds from the campaigns involved?
Stop the endorsements and expectation that some “friends in high places” will be doing Us a solid.

Does the FBI know this phony and fraud cheated on the Lieuts Exam. You don't go from scoring in the 5000s on the Sgts Exam to scoring in the top 5 on Lieut Exam. What's worse is that he walks around the academy and acts legit. You are a phony and a fraud Popeye along with the Hawaiian and 10 tact Lieut.

question for the experts. although they have been doing this forever, why do politicians, once they get a heads up, retire suddenly? does this somehow lessen prosecution and sentancing? you would think they would just shelter in place and steal as much as they could until the feds came and dragged them whimpering onto the bluebirds. anybody know? asking for a friend.

Looks like Philly , NYC ,Baltimore have same problems we have in Chicago, now the State AG. .
Prosecutors now act as defense attorneys, fail to. Approve Felony charges for slam dunk UUW. , defaced serial number on weapon, aggravated battery to police ,carjackers with good witness, victims and in court toss felony narcotics charges .
New state AG now wants to go after a White Police Officer that received a long sentence that. Could have been probation.
Will AG review cases of murders that were out on parole when crime was committed or rapes when offender was on electronic monitoring?
I doubt it ,
It is time for our unions to organize and have a recall election of the new AG , I do not think he would win again .

How long did they have Blago tapped? They only used certain, edited portions of his tapes. Maybe it’s time to revisit those tapes, just to see
how lucky some people, (like his foul mouthed wife), are/were, when they stopped using the tapes. Is there a statute of limitations on the time you can use the tapes, or just the crimes committed on tape? That could be golden!

Don’t assume Burke is the most significant target in this investigation. Just think about the number of people who he interacted with. Any individual and or company who obtained favorable treatment in exchange of retaining Burke or otherwise paying for deferential treatment is likely a subject. The interest in the post office development might mean there are developers under investigation. The tentacles on this seem endless.

Hee-Hee-Heeee...
NYAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAA!<

If only Burke WOULD flip!

City Hall would resemble the scene
of a very BAD arson fire...

A bunch of blackened aldercritter skeletons
hanging out of the upper floor windows would
be a sight that would make the upright, law-abiding,
high tax paying/getting the sum total of dick-all
for their money citizens to grin like a fat man
on Christmas Morning.

Go ahead Eddie...
Be the "match" that starts the righteous hot fire
to finally render to the Chicago City Council their
just reward.

Burn the whole rotten and corrupt thing to ashes.

If there are any survivors, may they spend their
remaining day in tearful genuflection and humility
broken only by random episodes of unbridled terror
and pant-shitting.

To keep them honest, on random occasions when they
open their closet door, the resident Fed inside
hands them their coat with a grin...

>Door opening... Coat proffered...
Coat accepted... GRIN! Door closes<

"??? ...SHRIEK!"

C'mon... Why should Chicago Policemen be the
only ones condemned to drink the bottomless cup
of Chicago-Style misery just because of who they are and
what they do?

Bottoms up aldercritters...
