Because if the department was led by rational, intelligent, and practical individuals with actual street smarts and experience who were not at the mercy of the democratic machine or political wind,then they might actually get results and have an effect on real crime. The machine runs on quid pro quo, identity politics, and pandering to racially driven fear mongering in order to get the votes they need to stay in power. They preach transparency for others but are afraid of it for themselves. They will spin reality, blame the police, and continue the "things need to change and we are the only ones that can do it" mantra all while promoting smoke and mirror tactics and ignoring real solutions that may not be good for the democratic ideology (possible loss of support in communities). If you make people think that you are the only one that can help them, it makes them need you (votes). By not actually helping them change their situations to where they no longer need the help and still making them think they need you, you have them for life. If you also villainize the opposition through demagoguery and identity politics as well then you have the formula for the machines political success. All this requires individuals in the fold that greatly benefit (merit promotion) from the machine that keeps on rolling.
Government should be like a jock strap or a bra. There for a little support but otherwise you go on about your day without even noticing it.

I worked with Dana in Narcotics and he was one of the best undercover officers in the unit. He bought dope and was respected by all. As a sergeant in Narcotics, he worked hard and treated all his guys, black, white and hispanic, equally and well.

Rumor is true. The SGTs exam 3 year requirement might also be changed to 18 month on to sit for the test and 3 years for promotion. Anything can happen... canceled power test, etc etc. Bean junior won’t stick around in patrol or wear the blue shirt for too long.

Im guessing 12 months total assigned to a district as a Patrolman, Sgt. and Lt. in 18yrs. What a racket.

Major scandal coming from Narcotics Sanchez moved before Homer Sq emplodes. Feds couldn't get the old school guys but man are the new school easy. Are the 010 district rats talking? Remember boys" the first to squeal gets the deal". As former FBI SA in charge Grant once said "you are either on the train or you are on the tracks
those guys had nothing to do with narcotics. Neither ever worked there. Sure they may have worked in the building but never in narcotics. One was a task force officer with the Feds before making Sgt but there is no connection to 189. Also, Sanchez wasn’t moved because of this. He was over promoted and had no clue how to run a unit like that. He drove that unit into the ground and burned every bridge along the way. The detectives were all moved out of their details and most of the teams were let to dwindle down to almost nothing. How can you expect results when each team consists on 3-4 people and a Sgt? He refused to fill the spots when people got promoted or left. He had a yes man LT with no OCD experience and they thought they could reinvent the wheel. Guess what it didn’t work and back to patrol/inspection you both go.
Lewin has also been promoted to Double Secret Deputy Chief of Information Services with big pay raise. The brass were very impressed by his knowledge of how to reset a game on the Atari 2600.
Capt. Jerome has dodged bullets , leaped buildings in a single bound , had offenders cuff themselves after committing a crime ... and now the city has realized that only him and him alone can decrease crime throughout the city . Be forewarned all who dare to cross him ... you will only catch a glimpse of him as swoops in like Bateman and saves the day . Don't be surprised if you see the city skyline with its buildings lit up to read JEROME .... this will be the new signal of law and order ... Chicago has a new commander coming soon and now our city will be safe . When ever you are in doubt just look to the sky and he will come , finally a crime fighter with teflon balls !

I came on in 86. The Bosses back then had an air of Respect. They commanded it and earned it. I never really heard any veteran cops disrespecting any bosses. Might have been a small beef with a Sergeant for a lower than expected efficiency score, but other than that it was truly a para-military organization. As Time progressed I have seen and witnessed people promoted who were totally useless and clueless, yes the command staff of CPD is a train wreck with no real fix in sight.

I have 6 years on work on the west and in my time have realized this job is a zero sum game. I gave up on activity and just grind the week out to rdo’s. I have seen cops retire and cops who’ve died forgotten about. A mistake in our profession can cost you punitive damages and worse your freedom or life. What I still can’t understand are people who want to work on a tac team or any type of aggressive unit. What’s the point ? Why takes risks and bring in numbers ?

Because if the department was led by rational, intelligent, and practical individuals with actual street smarts and experience who were not at the mercy of the democratic machine or political wind,then they might actually get results and have an effect on real crime. The machine runs on quid pro quo, identity politics, and pandering to racially driven fear mongering in order to get the votes they need to stay in power. They preach transparency for others but are afraid of it for themselves. They will spin reality, blame the police, and continue the "things need to change and we are the only ones that can do it" mantra all while promoting smoke and mirror tactics and ignoring real solutions that may not be good for the democratic ideology (possible loss of support in communities). If you make people think that you are the only one that can help them, it makes them need you (votes). By not actually helping them change their situations to where they no longer need the help and still making them think they need you, you have them for life. If you also villainize the opposition through demagoguery and identity politics as well then you have the formula for the machines political success. All this requires individuals in the fold that greatly benefit (merit promotion) from the machine that keeps on rolling.
Government should be like a jock strap or a bra. There for a little support but otherwise you go on about your day without even noticing it.

As far as the new Greek Commander is concerned both Riccio and Johnson didn’t listen when they were told that you don’t put Greeks in 012. The pressure from the restauranteurs and gamblers is intense. The only reason he was promoted is that Godsel spoke up for him to Rahm. Then Rahm told Riccio and Johnson to promote him. Godsel is at the Consent Decree Unit. When the new Mayor arrives he has a problem.

Actually, narcotics is no longer the unit it used to be. There is no morale in that unit anymore. administrative Sgt making 150 hours overtime, front office girls running the show, teams down to 7. Telling troops not to put in a merit packet unless you’re asked, otherwise it will be thrown in the garbage. Promoting based on color not qualification. I could go on ... yeah so no, narcotics is not straight.
Old retiree here.....
Came on in the 80's.......had a lot of great bosses, knowledgeable, dedicated, fair. Only had a couple whack-offs, who mostly knew they were whack-offs, and let the Lts and the Sgts run things. Yes, one or two had political clout, but didn't abuse it, or flaunt it.
But that isn't what it is today. Politics, SJW's, the MSM have changed what this department has become. And for most law abiding tax paying citizens, it isn't good. Millionaires and billionaires own the MSM via newspapers, television, Internet sites. You only get to see what they want you to see. They no longer report the news.....both good or bad.....you get what they want you to get, period.
Case in point- 4 shot, 1 who has passed away, at Jewish Temple yesterday, by some 19 year old goof....all day long coverage......
Chicago had HOW MANY shot yesterday? How many shot the day before? Not one flipping word on any station.....
Drug cartels running and ruining this city, hundreds of unsupervised youth running amok on the streets of what once was the Magnificent
Mile, robbing, beating, threatening citizens and tourists.....hardly a blip on any tv station......and how many murders so far this year? Done by whom?
So the double, triple meriting of certain individuals to create the illusion of "fairness" in the CPD is a result of all of this. Add Obama, BLM. And Democratic pressure to this, and what you get is an upper echelon of individuals (who have been promoted way over their capabilities and knowledge) not capable of bringing any semblance of order back to this city.
