Chase Refresher Course

  • The family of a 37-year-old woman who was killed by a stolen van being pursued by Chicago police during a high-speed chase through Englewood in 2015 will receive more than $21 million from the city of Chicago, attorneys for the family announced Wednesday.

Late Tuesday afternoon, a jury reached their verdict, awarding $21.3 million in the civil case before Judge Joan E. Powell at the Daley Center.

The trial lasted three weeks, said Andrew Touhy, a spokesman for the law firm Romanucci & Blandin, which represented the family of Maria Carrion Adame. It took the jury all day Tuesday to come to a decision, according to Touhy.
Until they come up with a car disabling laser of some sort or a standard "kill switch" it is not worth it to chase for pretty much anything.

Anyone who has chased a car after about 2010 is a complete idiot.
How many times do you need to be told to understand?
NOTHING GOOD CAN COME FROM IT!

Any-and-every poor decision and risk shithead behind the wheel takes falls on the PURSUING OFFICER when all is said and done.

Are you willing to bet your job, pension, and freedom on the driving ability of some amped up shithead who is probably high and never even had a license, with nothing to lose?

I buy tickets for just about any and every benefit that I encounter- because you just never know when it could be you.
But if you chase a car and step on your dick, don’t expect me to buy a ticket to help you out- you knew exactly what you were doing and I can’t support intentional stupidity. Enjoy the consequences of your poor decisions.

We hammer this home in roll all the time. The officers on our watch in our district seem to get it. But, we can only control or attempt to influence and guide our watch. Tact does their thing b/c their bosses aren’t hammering home that in almost no circumstance should they ever chase. Don’t even start it or call it out. Just let them drive away. We hear chases in our bordering district and then often end in crashes and think why did they chase to begin with. Unless a cop has been injured in some way, I can’t see almost any instance worth chasing. Just let them go. Once you accept that, it becomes a lot easier. Also, you should not be waiting for a supervisor to terminate your chase. You are an adult and should know the chase order. Don’t put it on a supervisor to end your stupid chase, be a man/woman and self terminate it your self.

1- There needs to be a cap on these lawsuits. Taxpayers can’t be responsible every time a violator doesn’t follow the law.
2- Stop blaming the police. The violator is responsible for causing this.
3- I think these huge payouts should be investigated. Judges used to be lawyers. How many help their buddies get a huge payday with boosted settlements?

NONE of us want the bad guys to get away, it's not in our nature. But as long as the law is going to hold us responsible for the offender's driving actions (which is ridiculous) we have to be smart and exercise self control and NOT put our selves in a position to enrich the lowlife attorneys. Until the laws hold the bad guy responsible for his own actions (really how are we responsible if he crashes) as long as we control our own vehicle it should all be on the bad guy. But then the lowlife leeches would have to sue the bad guy and 1/3 of nothing equals nothing. So out smart the real bad guys, the lowlife lawyers and lowest of all life forms the Politicians who put us in this position. If you look at it this way you may feel better. Wow I can’t believe the police are held liable- $23 M is nuts- that’s tax free so it’s like earning $32-$35 M. Before taxes. So this woman would have earned a $1 M a year or the policeman’s conduct was deemed to be that egregious. So basically Police will never pull anyone over again. Seems like a recipe for a degenerating society.

It is standard practice out here in the South Suburbs, Palos Heights, Palos Park, Orland, the police do not chase for stolen vehicles, theft from auto, burglaries, shoplifting, etc. No chases short of armed robbery and murder. The criminals seem to know it as breaking into cars is a nightly game of sport out here. The police, who spend most of their time on the major streets in traffic tickets, every once in a while will actually see someone escaping from a car burglary. They will not chase the thief.

We have the last of the 90’s Clinton-era Crime Bill Merit bosses still running the shitshow for starts.
Some still have that “numbers” and “activity” mental illness regardless how much they push the SpecialEd trust doctrine.
All a bit too shaky with their “by the books” reactions when shit hits the fan.

It’s a shame that there still is a very small group in every District that still harbors Hard Chargers.
These are the dimwit suckers that fall for the Merit Package bait.
I don’t think it’s ethics and oaths anymore.
But I will say it’s not always that easy to disengage either.
It does get better with age...and a trip or two down to 219:S. Dearborn.

There’s better things to police and it’s not the County protected feral.
The day will come when these chases will become civil rights violations just like the reasonable suspicion has become.
And the easily excited yearlings will still rush in without thinking to vie for that one coveted spot on the watch, team or unit.

No blue light specials.

I am a citizen of Chicago and I always cringe when i hear or read about a police chase. Reason being at the end of the story I read about the innocent people or family who were killed as the car being chased slamed into them at an intersection. Then the next sentence i read is that the person driving the chased car ran from the scene never to be found, and the only reason they were being chased is they had a burned out tail light or something like that. I also remember a few years back when a an off duty policeman on his way home from his shift was struck and killed in his personal car at an intersection by a car that was being chased by the police. So, one of your own was killed on his way home from work because of a chase. Wasn't that enough proof to stop chases, i guess not. Police chases aren't worth it...no one benefits, there are only losers and those are the innocent ones just driving down the street...they lose their lives!! PLEASE no more chases...it ain't worth it, and the judge will give them a low bond and they'll bond out before you finish your paperwork, and then Crimesha will either reduce the charges or just drop the charges and blame it on the police!!

California is one of the most liberal states in the nation, and they're within the liberal 9th circuit court boundaries, yet California agencies get into vehicle pursuits all the time.

Supreme Court has already ruled that pursuits are totally acceptable. The only pursuits that draw scrutiny are ones that "shock the conscience", such as chasing a speeder through a grammar school dismissal, with hundreds of kids on the streets, walking in and out of traffic. I agree that chasing isn't worth it to me, but legally, the city should win all these big money verdicts on appeal, based on supreme court precedent.

Wait a second, the no chase policy by Special Ed is brilliant. You call in the description of the vehicle and direction of flight. Other units see the wanted vehicle and call it in and continue on their patrol or respond to next call. Only paper car does its thing. Maybe a follow up by the Dicks. This is great. You really don't have much to do. Bad guys get away to murder and terrorize the community again and again. Cuts down on generous jury awards and bad publicity. This is really a swell idea. Ed should get a big medal or maybe a big bonus from Little Lorie's on another great crime fighting idea.

Do anything more than that and your A$$ will be in a sling. If anyone asks if your going to chase the bad guys, just tell them Special Ed said "no chases". Give them what they want. Do less with less.

I think the point was, that most chases start out as a traffic violation, or some minor thing, and can ened badly. Citizens obviously count, but car chases are just too dangerous and will not end well.

Almost everywhere in Chicago is a school district, kids are crossing everywhere. There are too many people, AMD too much traffic, etc., To chase. Maybe the laws will change, but , there will still be terrible injuries, deaths, etc. Much of this out of control of the officers chasing, but they will still be held liable. I think units calling in the location of offenders is a good idea, but that's all that can be done.

Just want to point out that vehicle chases are extremely dangerous for police officers too. I think offenders should be apprehended and don't want to see them go free, but this is a win for the officer and keeps them safe. High speed vehicle chases are one of the most dangerous things a police officer does. As much as it's about avoiding lawsuits, politics and certain unfortunate events that have ruined it, this policy will keep you safe!
