- Portland just lost a huge chunk of its police presence. On Friday, Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts wrote an email to his deputies, stating his concern for their safety. “I will not place you at unnecessary personal and professional risk,” the email read.
The city of Portland is largely patrolled by the Portland Police Bureau and receives support from neighboring counties like Clackamas Sheriff’s Department. With this decision, remaining officers in the area will no doubt feel the stress of being understaffed.
The sheriff determined that his officers faced a hostile populace on one hand AND a hostile local government on the other:
- Portland officer have repeatedly been told to stand down during past protests. Mayor Wheeler tends to side with the liberal agenda, taking protests as just people expressing their feelings. But things have gotten violent a number of times.
And rather than see his deputies sued into oblivion and his employers (the county voters) footing the bill for frivolous suits, Sheriff Robert's severed his department's relationship with Portland.
To this we say, "Well played Sheriff." This is disengagement on a scale unseen in this country for decades, maybe ever. It probably wouldn't affect a municipality like Chicago - adequate local resources - but for Portland? It could be (will be?) devastating.

My kid travels frequently to Portland. He says there are hundreds of tents occupied by the dregs of society throughout the city. Another once beautiful city destroyed by liberal thinking.

Portland has 1000 sworn officers and 647,000 residents for a ratio of about 15.5/10k.
This is over 20% less than the national average for cities of its size.
Currently, Portland has 120 openings for sworn officers.
Only 61 people applied for those 120 positions and, of those, only THREE managed to pass the background check.
Look at how other countries do it... I go to Latin America on a regular— there are areas down there that the police don’t go
Portland politicians are killing their city. If it wasn’t for the beautiful mountains, recreation and ocean, there would be more people fleeing. Kinda makes you wonder what will happen to Chicago and Illinois someday? Politicians are killing it also but we don’t have anything close to the beauty of Oregon to keep people here. The problem is we are not a democracy, but a constitutional republic. What the hell are they teaching in school nowadays? I even hear Trump call it a democracy.

I foresee a lot time due denied, mandatory overtime days and horrible work conditions for Portland PD. Those that can will retire in short order. Those that can't will lateral over to another dept or leave the job all together. All the while, Portland will fail to recruit new officers and the city will be in fast decline.
From what I read, Portland wanted the outside agencies to sign 'indemnity agreements' so that if a lawsuit ensued from police action they took inside the city limits assisting the city, the COUNTY would be liable, not the city. They also wanted the county agencies to be bound by Portland Police Bureau's 'use of force' regulations when they operated in the city, which as you'd expect from a liberal hellhole, are totally anti police and oriented towards 'social justice'. Kudos to the sheriffs for saying no way and backing off, but I feel sorry for the PPD officers who are left to try to police the unpoliceable. Those sad totals for applicants for a good paying job tell the whole tale.

The sheriff is a smart cookie. He did a risk/reward analysis. He came to the correct conclusion that the risk to his deputies/department/county was far higher than any possible reward. PS. Unless ur in a soft spot, the risk reward analysis for anyone that's 9161 patrolman has the same result. Get the hell out if you are young, or old. Meh - just live in a suburb. One of the problems Portland has recruiting cops is that you can go work for a suburban department where people actually like the cops.
It's an interesting case - Portland is only 6% black, so the anti-cop feeling isn't driven by racial animosity - it is that Portland has had hordes of left-wing whites moving there, who have convinced themselves that Portland doesn't need cops, because Portland has a low violent crime rate.
Portland does have a very high property crime rate, however - it's fun when one of the cop-haters has their $1000 bike stolen, and is outraged that the cops don't drop everything to investigate such a major crime.

Youtube has video of the police chief providing those numbers while testifying before the city council. A councilman asks why they can't simply waive the pot prohibition. The chief replies that pot remains forbidden under federal law and the department cannot legally transfer a firearm to a 'prohibited person', i.e., anyone that has used pot in the last year.
