Guess What Time it Is?

Evidently, city government is being run as efficiently as possible - time to raise taxes!
  • Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Wednesday said there’s “no question” residents will need to pay more in taxes or fees to plug a looming city budget shortfall estimated at more than $700 million.

Lightfoot made the comment, without elaborating on specifics, after her second City Council meeting, when she was asked about a campaign promise to find budget cuts before seeking a property tax increase. The city’s next budget will be presented in the fall.

“There’s no question we’re going to have to come to the taxpayers and ask for additional revenue. What that ask is, I think remains an open question because we’re still trying to get our arms around how big is the deficit for next year and what can we do to winnow it down,” Lightfoot said. “But I think we’ve got to demonstrate to taxpayers in the city that we are taking a different approach to running city government much more efficiently.”
Anyone know if Lightgroot has seen the graphics we put up about cutting redundant supervision in the Department? You know what's amazing about those charts? You can apply it to all sorts of city departments. Slash and burn middle management, starting with anyone who has the word "deputy" or "assistant" in their job titles. Then start on the aldercreature offices.

So just this year, the State has jacked up taxes, fees and penalties.

The schools have promised to limit-up their portion of the property tax levy.

And now Lightgroot is promising more pain for taxpayers, who can't leave Chicago, Cook County, Illinois fast enough.

Please tell me your not surprised. This was predicted last year multiple tomes and even a projection of 30% increase in real estate taxes along with enormous fees increases. Cuts we don't need no stinking cuts in budget, what we need is more money from you. Why cut when you have a cash cow to carve up. Your staying the city, why? Yoyo just might want to rethink that answer. The real question is can you afford to stay in the city.

Such positions are not redundant, they are one of government's primary objectives. To create well paying jobs (where no real work is done) for the connected.

Everyone needs to drop the fantasy ideas they were taught with regard to the purposes of government. Those are fiction. Fairy tales. Fairy tales to fleece the taxpayers and keep the government employees that do work doing it.

Government is a vehicle for the few to live well at the expense of the many and tell them how to live. It is a collection of various rackets and petty control freakism.

Most of those leaving are probably on the losing ends of elections.

Those on the winning end of the elections see themselves benefiting from those idiots being in office.

"Every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods." - H. L. Mencken

Of course many of those fleeing will eventually recreate what they fled wherever they go. Because they won't see the problem as one of giving government power but only the wrong people being in charge.

You think you are going to file bankruptcy for the state and wash it clean? You will have destroyed the American Dream and there will be no loyalty to the government but ANARCHY toward the democRATS and their greed! If you think the situation in shitcago is bad, wait.....

A simple and relatively easy solution to the city's budget crisis: reduce the number of aldermen. There are currently 50 aldermen and we can all agree, that's overkill, unnecessary and wasteful. There are currently 23 Police Districts. Reduce the number of aldermen from 50 to 23. They will have an office in the District station where they serve and will be accessible to their constituents. Their new boundaries would be that of the District's and would be responsible for its upkeep. How do we decide upon the 23 you ask? Simple, anyone with more than 20 years in office is gone. Give them their retirement (which they so diligently earned) and send them packing. If they refuse or resist, make them earn their votes from the communities they will be serving. It would be a cutthroat campaign and the corruption would be publicly exposed and indictments would fly. They would essentially destroy themselves. It would be entertaining to say the least. Just a thought...

Property tax increase = north side! So, because myself and my neighbors know how to behave ourselves, our properties are worth more! Properties, comparable to mine on the south side, pay two to three times less in taxes, just because they've made their neighborhoods shit holes! That leaves the residents of the north side to bear the tax burden for the entire city!

Do what real businesses do when times are tough. Cut unnecessary capital projects like lakefront flyovers, bike lanes, large expensive park projects, etc. That funding should be going to infrastructure and roads. Yes, city personnel in all depts is top heavy and should be cut. And 50 aldermen are not needed. Many of them are unfit to serve. I see workers at city parks just sitting in offices doing nothing. The garbage crew in my area can easily be cut by one person. Two workers are not needed to empty cans. One does all the work while the other is on her phone, smoking and digging thru cans for stuff to take home. And why the hell does it take years to get a new garbage can when one is damaged? You’re charging for garbage pick up now so promptly replacing damaged cans is expected.

Get a handle on crime in the entire city so people will want to come here again and patronize businesses and restaurants. You’re in over your heads and need outside help. Stop beating on the police and blaming them for everything. And the Mayor has done nothing but inflame the relationship with the police by spewing and helping to spread untrue rumors. Real leaders do not lead this way. Have some class and professionalism. The problem is the SA office and courts who keep letting serious felonies go on low or no bond to victimize again.

Make it easier for new businesses to start up. It should not take years to get permits and zoning. This is potential tax revenue being wasted. And quite regulating everything under the sun. Things might speed up if people kept their hands out of the till.

Why is the 35th Street bridge by the river under constant construction for the last two years? Were the repairs not done correctly the first time around?

Don’t come around, Mayor, with anymore taxes until you have a bare bones budget with no waste. In the meantime, I hope the Feds roll up a bus and help out with the clean up.

Mayor Lightloot can offset the deficits with increasing the fees of Municipal identification cards for those non-residents. Model the fee increases after the F.O.I.D. card proposal by the state.

Use the much needed revenues from these increases to fund public education for the newest anchors, the affordable healthcare for all regardless of immigration status and assorted food sustenance programs. be sure to get fingerprints and run those name through available private databases which collect certain information on people to ensure no criminals have used the shadows to their advantage to conceal past illegal behaviors.

It is imperative to ensure this information is not shared with other federal government entities like ICE but rather only permissible uses like voter registration drives by S.E.I.U. volunteers with their get out the vote campaigns or other progressive lead information distribution efforts.

Caterpillar, General Motors, Ford, Com Ed, Gas Co etc all did some form of this.

The current pension systems are simply not sustainable for public employees

Killing the messenger will not change this.

effective 01Sep2020 if you don’t have the gold star on the upper right corner or a passport you cannot fly anywhere even in this once great country. If you want to follow Illinois law and have drivers license at your station address it is no
More, has to be your home address also needed a certified copy of birth certificate and marriage license, so over to crook county clerks office, $60.00 later back to Secretary of State office, thankful brought utilities bills in my name.

This has been common knowledge for about two years. You could have just got a passport but buying a passport is about 150 to 200 bucks.

But the real Id, they have made it very clear that in October you can't fly with out it.
Not just an IL thing either.

"Capt. Obvious" at 9:25 AM:

All wards must be of equal population based on U.S. Census figures. In a per capita comparison with the city council members of the nation's ten most populous cities (Chicago excluded), Chicago should have no more than seventeen (17) wards/city council members. Since CPD districts range in population from about 50,000 to 250,000 residents, it would be impossible to have an alderman for each district.

The CPD has twenty-two (22) districts; not twenty-three (23).

Next year's 2020 U.S. Decennial Census will certainly show a loss in Chicago's population. Maybe even 15 wards would be excessive depending on the City's population decline.

And why the hell does it take years to get a new garbage can when one is damaged? You’re charging for garbage pick up now so promptly replacing damaged cans is expected.
A couple years ago I was told that the cans were on 6 month backorder. Had a
conversation with Sposato about a week ago. He said if someone in the ward needs a can he pays for it out of his aldermanic budget, because he knows the city takes too long

Pensions. Tax-free income paid for people to do nothing. Originally were to be paid at age 70. Was supposed to be supplemental income.

Pensions have become lottery tickets.

Data from Illinois’ six largest pension systems show 19,158 former government workers collect annual pensions of more than $100,000, costing those systems nearly $2.4 billion combined in fiscal year 2018.

Six-figure pensioners enrolled in those systems contributed an average of $160,100 toward their own retirements over the course of their careers, and retired on average at age 59.

The top annual earner among the six systems is University of Illinois, Chicago professor emeritus Tapas Das Gupta, who received nearly $504,700 in fiscal year 2018. He has accumulated more than $6 million in benefits since retiring, despite having contributed only $475,300 to SURS – less than 8 percent of his total pension earnings.

Timothy Tully, who retired from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale at age 55, received $376,500 in benefits over the year, despite having contributed a total of just $43,600 to the fund during his career.

John Folse, another Southern Illinois University retiree, received $303,400 from SURS this year, and has collected more than $4.4 million total since retiring – the third-highest total among all enrollees. He contributed only $288,200 to his retirement plan – less than 7 percent of his total benefits.

Calling her "Lightgroot", SCC, is almost a compliment. She needs something more appropriate.

Chicago doesn't need 50 aldermen. Want to save money, get rid of 40 aldermen and have only 10 aldermen and 10 wards. You wont see this on an election referendum !!!!!!!!!!

You will have to determine how much is it worth to you to live outside the City?
By this I mean giving she will give CPD a contract but will extract huge concessions in the
form of limits on pension COLA increases, 2 tier benefits and limitations on wages and
benefits on new hires etc

Where have you been? There are already two tier for new hires when it comes to benefits and pensions
