- Tens of thousands of cannabis convictions will be automatically expunged under a partnership between a tech nonprofit and Cook County prosecutors, part of an effort State’s Attorney Kim Foxx characterized as “righting the wrongs of the past.”
Foxx said the collaboration with Code for America would help atone for prosecutors’ role in an overzealous “war on drugs.”
“It is prosecutors who were part of the war on drugs, we were part of a larger ecosystem that believed that in the interest of public safety, that these were convictions that were necessary to gain,” Foxx said at a news conference Tuesday. “In the benefit of hindsight and looking at the impact of the war on drugs, it is also prosecutors who have to be at the table to ensure that we are righting the wrongs of the past.”
Um....dumbass? These were laws. Laws passed by legislatures. Prosecutors, believe it or not, actually are tasked with prosecuting violations of the criminal code. We know that's news to Crimesha, but once upon a time, prosecutors ran for office based on their ability to convict criminals.
Now, we realize attitudes have changed regarding weed use, and it's economically unfeasible to jail everyone, nearly impossible to fine everyone and too much potential profit to be made in weed cultivation, which is the actual driving force behind the legalization push. But that doesn't mean prosecutors were wrong for doing their jobs.

Curious as to how many of these were already plead down from more serious crimes including violent ones.
It was Illegal at the time and still is under federal statutes, to blanket expunge the convictions is foolish but democrats will do anything for a vote.
Restorative justice...ain’t it great?! Shouldn’t Lil Kim be more worried about the cases she’s got on the current docket, and not worry about cases from yesteryear?! That office is so far out of whack that it’s scary. She’ll probably get re-elected too.
I just wonder how many of these criminals with newly expunged records will be applying for the new 21st century Chicago Police Department. And when they hit the street how they will handle the non-licensed marijuana dealers.
Puff puff, gone
What she says fits well with the 2020 mantra of democrats. That you are racist if you disagree with her.
This is also “righting the wrongs”. Race reparations will be on the table some day soon and they will be accepted soon enough by this current generation.
Wrongs past. The shit was against the law.
Why didn’t anyone in the media confront Foxx with that fact that it was law?
Can someone tell me where the hell Kim Fox attended law school? Did she actually pass the bar exam to be a practicing attorney or should I say experimenting attorney, with the laws, the victims and peoples lives!!! The shit that comes out of her mouth is just astounding!
Just wait until they "decriminalize" cocaine and heroin.
does that a-hole know she's not the public defender ???
Hell, I say, go back and lockup the prosecutors, judges and politicians for their crimes against weed nation humanity.
It started with the police...lets see where it ends .
They're using some private business to help weed out the convictions for small amounts of pot. Is it just me, or do I smell a rat here and expect that the corruption that is about to happen because of "clerical errors"? Lots of felons are somehow going to get their convictions for more than a small amount of weed expunged. It's SJW, and free the victims of racism time! Hallelujah! These people are as dumb as bags of shit and so is the voting public that keeps empowering the damn felons to corrupt everything they can and line their filthy pockets. You know it's true.
yes, it does mean they were wrong, and so were officers making arrests because there was and is no authority to criminalize this, or gun possession in the first place.
it is yalls job to protect and defend our rights, not violate them and then claim afterwards that ya was just doin yer job.
Read the Declaration, read the Constitution and abide by yoir oath to protect them...especially when it comes to arresting the corrupt politicians abusing the Citizenry.
So let me get this straight. They are going to expunge records of people who broke the law and were convicted under the law by the courts. But they are going to keep records of police officers, which are on line for anyone to see (Citizens Police Data Project-Invisible Institute), of allegations of police misconduct most of which are unfounded, not sustained and exonerated. And these stay up forever. Something is wrong with this system and the people running it. Can you guess what it is? This is a movement all across the country by a certain political party to decriminalize crimes to gain votes. The majority of Americans are asleep at the wheel and have no idea or care that their country is being taken away from them.
Pandering at its finest.
Don’t forget a lot of those convictions for “the mere possession of cannabis” which sounds so innocuous, were actually plea bargains down from manufacture and delivery cases because the State’s Attorney wanted an easy conviction rather than going through the “bother” of putting a trial on. This happened on the federal level too when Obama started to release some high level drug dealers that were presented as minor drug possessions. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose in a trial. I am not speaking of cases which are obvious that you are going to lose on the face of it. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is not structured to pursue justice, it is structured to win cases for the sitting State’s Attorney to have a high conviction rate so that they can be re-electable.
Code for America Brigade has some connection with Open Uptown which has a website but it really does not tell you what they do or support or where they are. Maybe you have to be invited in. But they do have a “code of conduct” list which tells you how to be “politically correct on what you say and how to say it”. It sounds like a lot of left wing progressive talk gone amok.
The new expungement and records sealing laws passed by our pro-criminal legislators are giving criminals more and more advantages against law abiding citizens. These laws apply to all felonies, not just drug crimes.
Not only economic but politically practical declare victory and retreat
Basically what public defender Foxx is saying that those who were guilty of a crime, are no longer guilty when the law is changed. I hope they lower the what constitutes murder, so they can empty cook county jail. I feel safer already.
did bootleggers get the same treatment after prohibition?
this goofy bitch has some strange priorities.
being a prosecutor is not one of them.
So if a person pled guilty as opposed to being found guilty at trial will also benefit from this?
By what authority will she be tampering with the legal records of Cook County?
Now they can all be Cops.
Legalization isn't about the profits long-term, but about calming the cattle before the Storm.
Colorado sold $1B worth, collected $200M in taxes in a year. $200 Million in Chicago dollars would mean nothing to shortfall.
Nobody mentions the drain on Society when you become a pro-drug destination. Weed will bring the junkies, needles and homeless. Ask Denver, San Fran.
So on January first, does it become legal for the corner guy to still sling nickel bags?
Can he just claim it as income and pay taxes on it?
Lambasting prosecutors for following the law? Nutz.
Fingerprints stay on file. It stays in the FBI database and law enforcement will still have access to your records. Heck if you apply for one of those TSA fast passes it will still be in the system and you can be denied security clearances. More PR than substance. Could have hired a lawyer to do the same thing on your own. If you had a minor conviction it could make it easier to get a job whatever. You did something stupid, paid the penalty, you should have a chance to get on with your life. Again this is more PR than substance.
And the dumbfucks of this city will re-elect her donkeyass. Useless, incompetent, piles of shit run this city
HOORAY, all Police officers fired for pissing hot will be rehired ,given seniority and back pay.
This is one dumb woman. Right the wrongs? Fuck it, give them reparations because it’s just the right thing to do! WTF!!!!
Needs to be a good ole fashion protest out in the South Suburb where the Soros backed Crook lives. Can you imagine the size of the shit stain that would cause ? Doubtful the local Police agree with her BS
Ah the Illinois bar exam, taboo subject.
A little off topic, today John Kass has a story about the same judge appointed the same prosecutor in the Smolett case and that same judge appointed the same prosecutor in the Koschman/Vanecko case. We all know how well that turned out....
The expungement is a component of the legalization law going into effect 1January. Foxx is just trying to spin it for her political gain amongst her criminal constituents. “Look what I’m doing for you!”
Just think how many votes she just bought for free.
We are so fortunate to have 2 public defenders here in Cook County
This is just intended to get votes from the people and folks cause they cannot and are unwilling to control their drug addiction. The legalization and encouragement of marijuana will destroy Illinois and guarantee dummycrats elected by the dope head lazy deluded people and folks.
I wouldn't be so mad if I knew it wasn't worded this way also if it was for the possession charge from the get go... there are many gang bangers who have killed or been killed over marijuana spots.... but dont worry crimeisha will still drop all those charges... cook county prosecuters supports these gang members.
Why not put pressure on the SAO? Identify the assistants who are co-conspirators in Foxxamania. Let them be saddled with their betrayal of the productive members of society for the rest of their careers. Seeking employment? Running for the bench? Can't keep the criminals records, but can keep the lawyers.
The war on drugs is undoubtedly one of the contributing factors, and perhaps the most important, to the national decline in violent crime from the 1980s to the present. Most violent criminals are in one way or another involved with the legal drug trade. The war on drugs, with its harsh sentencing guidelines, took millions of violent criminals off the streets during what would have been their prime crime-committing years. It also reduced their fertility, lessening both their genetic and cultural contributions to the national demographics. Sure, some inoffensive college students and Deadhead stoners may have been punished beyond reason, but many innocent lives have been spared by locking up the worst 1% of the population.
Nothing lie pandering to the criminal element, Kim foxx talk about an utter and total disgrace, from the lies she told with smollet and now this nonsense. Every word she says makes innocent people cringe, her and her lying friend Toni along with the rest of the democrats bent on destroying everything good in this country. Think even the liberal publications call Chicago,Illinois, crook county the most corruption filled in the entire country. what is trump doing to drain this extremely polluted swamp? Is the hammer about to slam some some nails down soon?
On the subject of weed if you have dispensaries in your districts that are medical they will all go recreational January first and expect huge crowds and of course calls for police service. The residents that live them are in for a rude awakening watch and see reefer madness everywhere. Yes many of us smoked weed as teens, but the strength of this weed is 25X stronger, the thc levels are high "this is not grandmas weed anymore!" Expect the "sick truck," to be rolling even more, and more hospitalization reports to be generated, suburbs like Naperville voted "no," like others on allowing weed dispensaries selling rec weed they know something we don;t. But the again when the head of loris security detail his security company is representation and protecting dispensaries noway will it not be allowed everywhere in chiraq!

Hmm is this a Boom there it is moment collusion? Just axin!
A conviction for possession of small amounts ( personal use) of all drugs should, at the most, be a misdemeanor. Making these felonies was not a deterrent and does not work. However, selling drugs, or possession of a large amount, which means you are selling, and that includes weed, should not be erased from the record. But, if you have read the Illinois law on recreational weed, grants and loans will be given to formerly convicted weed dealers so they can open up a legal weed business, once their record is expunged. I believe that they are being given preference because they are an oppressed minority. Studies in states that have legal weed show that only 25% of the consumed weed were bought from legal shops. The remainder? Well , that is coming from the street dealers. It is cheaper.
Clear their records. Legalized weed. Easier to find employment... ok. Who wants to hire someone that smokes weed every day? How much does it affect their judgment? Do you want customer service employees to reek of weed? They represent your company. Will they need umbrella insurance in case of accidents? How about government employees? A lot of downside not being addressed... as usual
Here come the lawsuits boys and girls. The old false arrest narratives.
This just means that drug dealers and gang members can now legally possess firearms and protect their street level criminal enterprises. Remember the convicted felon latin king who changed his name to legally get a foid card and used his legally purchased firearm to protect his drug sales? its going to be this but on a much larger scale and the criminal doesn't have to use the loopholes by changing his/ her name.
A few cops were fired for pissing hot at a random drug test.
Will they be reinstated?
I was never really a "dope" guy, but I sat in court a lot of time. I don't remember ever a conviction for cannabis, unless it was a huge amount taken in on a warrant, or just plain luck on a traffic stop. Mostly dealers, or gang members moving the product for said dealers.
My point is...anyone actually convicted of a cannabis conviction in cook county is probably a bad fellow, and deserves to be convicted.
Thanks for letting all the Shitheads go...
Subsequent charges too?
Probable cause that led to weed possession, like robbery, armed violence, UUW, getting tossed as well?
DUI offenses, what about those related to weed.
That’s a lot of piece meal sorting and leaving it up to ASA discretions and inherent bias.
Kray-Z Kimmm’s Target CPD Team must have run out of 25 yr old police involved shooting cases to search through.
Cook County must be rolling in surplus TIF money to offer these expungements up for free.
Krazy KmmmFxxxUp had an Unaccountability Tuesday presser too. Says that she welcomes the Swollette special prosecutor, so the County can learn from mistakes about the way the case was handled. Three year learning curve?
Wasn’t this States Atty job intended for someone who knew what they were doing?
Both remedial level, 3 year wonders, Cabrini Cousins Jugghaid and Kmmm are still learning their jobs.
So when are the police going to stop arresting people for drug possession?
Sounds like the way your average eighth grader would give a speech. Flimsy, thin, prefabricated thoughts pasted together. This now passes as professional, high-level thought.
So, she started by not enforcing the current laws on the books. Now she's going to overlook previously enforced legislation.
Finally, she will refer to murder as retroactively recognized abortion...and all will be right in her constituents' respective worlds.
When the 21st amendment repealed the 18th amendment (Prohibition) , did the people with criminal records under that law get their convictions expunged? Just a guess, but me thinks NO!
Maybe Mr. Capone could have turned his life around and gone on to a great public career if that was allowed?
Foxx is right. Those cannabis convictions and prosecutions were on harmless potheads who were just trying to get high. Nobody ever shot up a weed tip. Oh wait, they did? Ok but nobody does that anymore. Oh they still fight over weed tips? Ok maybe these convicts weren't so innocent
Just wait until they "decriminalize" cocaine and heroin.

Already done. CCSAO has prosecuted anyone for possession of controlled substances for years. When police bring cases involving possession of narcotics to court, the CCSAO "diverts" the cases into its non-scheduled "drug courts" where junkies agree to attend 2 classes in exchange for the prosecutors not filing charges. All carot, not stick.
If the cases involve deliveries of larger amounts, defense attorneys will simply opt for a preliminary hearing where a judge will conduct a hearing yet find no probable cause to arrest no matter the facts.
Narcotics have been de facto legal in Cook Co for more than a decade.
What BS Kim should spend her time prosecuting not interpreting law

They weren’t arrested or charged with a crime. They were dismissed for a violation of a condition of employment which is not the same
Not sure how that will play out
When I was a kid eating meat on Friday was a mortal sin. Chicago hot dogs were always my downfall. Now that its no longer a sin (except during Lent) I'm wondering if I can get my record automatically expunged.

The junkies, needles and homeless are here already.Have been for at least half a century as far as I personally can confirm.Next you'll be concerned that weed will bring in gangs, hookers and corrupt politicians.
Who cares. It's weed. Did you really think you were going to win the war on a drugs one dime bag at a time?

Nope! It is awful, was awful and will be awful. Read the revealing book

By that logic if a criminal was convicted for raping a minor who is now an adult... Should the criminal get his rape conviction overturned? Passage of time and what not.

Governor Hickenlooper in Colorado is having second thoughts about legalization. It's bringing in more problems than originally anticipated.
When can I expect my refund check for my pot fine????
Like wow man. If I get that expungint does it hurt? The I can be the popo man. Like cool, I aint gonna have no record. Like this is great man. I can get any kindaa job I want now. Cool man. Like I can be the suprindentent of pulice. Like this is the bests news evr.

Thank you for being honest, SCC, about the real reasons behind the attitude and legislative switch. And thank you for recognizing the real job of a prosecutor.
