I'm pleased to announce that we will soon offer a Sergeant Promotional Exam. Planning and development for this exam has been taking place for the last several months. An official posting for this exam will be coming out in September, with a tentative exam date slated for mid-December 2019. We would like to provide our members who are interested in the rank of Sergeant ample opportunity to prepare.

There’s a recent order that doesn’t allow a PO the opportunity to take the sgts exam without sufficient time in grade. He won’t have the required time on this year so Is that order being rescinded??
I already have the answers.....
Again they have to give this exam, then grade it, not sure if they combine both parts into one which would be a clusterfuck of a show. Then score it and then announce the results. Might be a while, room for one more class?

Mayor Lightfoot is offering teacher 16% over 5 years and the Sgt’s Union is ready to accept 2% over 6 years to avoid arbitration. All Sgt’s better wake up and contact their union. For years union leadership has been shortchanging the membership now its going to cost every Sgt thousands of Dollars. Please contact the Sgt’s union and let them know 2% is an insult and unacceptable.

Why should they go to arbitration, they'll just get what we get during our negotiations. That way they don't spend any money on the arbitrator, we do. Me too clause.

If CPD conforming to CALEA standards is to be believed, the next class of sergeants will be 75 - 100 in size, followed by at least one more class of the same size in the early to late spring of 2020.
Don’t forget, the current list stays up until a new test is administered and graded... after any contested questions are reviewed and possibly tossed out.
And if history is any indicator, a mid-December test will consist of Part One of said test. Part Two won’t be administered until mid-2020, graded and rankings to follow sometime in late fall 2020. Hell, there may be three more classes off the current list.
Either way, you can have it. Chevrons ain’t all they’re cracked up to be these days unless you’re hooked up.

Well, tis a pity all on duty officers in Chicago are only given a limited supply of bottled unicorn farts. That magic gas is the only substance to change human behavior and make lifelong violent criminals behave.
Knowing if or when to uncork the bottle and transform the violent fiends into peace lovers is a tough call for any on duty policeman. Even veteran officers don't know how to best solve that dilemma. To leave the cork in or waste the mystical gas on a mere strong arm robber?

The entire exam, first and second part will be given on same day. That means be prepared to give up ten to twelve hours of your Saturday. Also, no promotions thru the end of the year. However, depending on how long it takes to grade and manipulate the results to make it politically correct, there might be one or two more classes off the old list

That is just a pilot program. Another one of those 'test it out' moves for the long term betterment of the city...
When I was new everyone with time on the job told me that all the exams are rigged and don’t even bother with them. I decided to study my ass off and devoted a big chunk of my life to trying to pass the sgt exam. I got a decent score, nothing great, but ended up making it by score. So it is possible. I know plenty of people re studying the actual test, plenty are going to be merit, but there’s a chance still to make it on your own. By studying hard. I know plenty of others that have made it legit too. So please don’t let people talk you out of taking the test. Don’t let them make you believe there’s no hope. There is a chance, so give it all you’ve got. Devote yourself to this one cause for the next few months. It’s something that will seriously pay off for the REST of your life. Your pay increases till you retire and your pension increases by a sizable amount too. It’s worth it. It’s possible. You can slip through the cracks. Good luck to you and hope to see many of you in stripes in the near future.
Freeze on hiring but not on promotions? Pretty soon it will be all chiefs and no indians. But the promotions will stop with the clouted and they will demand that the brave do the job.
Stop the smoke screen and just make the kid a lieutenant already. Then Weezy and Junior can make captain together.

Out in one of the collar counties, the County Board told the road deputies that they make too much money. The deputies were asking for 1.5 percent a year. The CB said no, you make too much as it is, we will pay for your health insurance but no raise. It's the new trend.
No thanks. I already know how this plays out. When some are studying the actual test, I already know I don’t stand a chance.

This whole department is a joke and the way things are conducted is ridiculous. 13 1/2 years on the job and I've been able to take 1 promotional exam for Sgt. and 1 for detective. Anyone who says "you should have studied harder" you can stick it in your ear. 6 1/2 more years, I'm starting the house on fire and I'm leaving this shit show of a department and state.

There never seemed to be so many disgruntled officers when Townshend,Fat Phil,Thomas,and Uncle Matt were promoting all of their family,friends,desk bunnies,side pieces,their kids friends. All of whom went on to become various news and departmental fuck ups in their own ways.
These tests are not real.

It took over 9 years to fire them after allegations of child abuse with serious injury.
We have the city trying to railroad on-duty coppers trying to do their best with good under stressful circumstances and with good intentions,
yet here it’s obvious these coppers have no business on the job, but it takes damn near a decade to get it together.

Giving a test doesn’t mean promoting unless there’s hiring already preplanned, of course in adherence to the 21st Century Pillar 1.
If and when that time comes for an exam, it will be postponed until all special promotional candidates have met the requirement if it isn’t changed to accommodate 21st Century Pillar 1 by Jugghead.
Remember it’s only Part 1 that needs to be attended (not necessarily pass) to get a foot in the doer.
Besides that, rumors floating that it’s in writing and part of SpecialEd’s exit package to allow for special opportunities.
Study groups are already forming. LT's and Capt's. are asking for a $250.00 donation to help cover the cost of study materials. The classes are by invitation only, and here's the kicker. The answers to the test, are to be handed out in oral format only. As study material, the answers to the last 3 tests are to be distributed. No recording devices will be allowed in the classes.
Internal affairs is looking in to this, but as yet, can find no credible information to support this investigation.

Yes , hiring freeze means no more promotions from any existing list .
Ed will tweak order allowing anyone with 3+ years to take test , cannot be promoted until you have 5 years . Sounds Fair .
Now , will Lori Lightfoot, Feds require everypart of test to be graded by score , no pass fail . This is the only way to get qualified Sergeants.
Maybe 40% multiple choice , 40% short answer , 10% Oral , 10% efficiency , that would be fair .
Next reduce merit to 10% .
Good Luck to all . It’s the toughest , most demanding position on CPD.
When will a detective ,Patrol specialist,Traffic specialist and Evidence Technician test be given ? Really all the positions require knowledge of Arrests ,Criminal investigations . Give one test covering all positions . This will save money , call police officers in rank order , they can always pass on the opening and wait.
The multiple choice test should be graded the day of test , like the old detective tests , Officers know their score before leaving the building .
A list of rank order for that part could be posted within a week by an outside agency.
Prediction: eddies son will be one if the top 10 scorers.

Recently at HQ i saw the saddest career move while on the job. A PO was holding an umbrella for a Lt as they walked through the HQ parking lot in the rain. This sad sad man was getting soaked, but the LT stayed bone dry. I made eye contact with the poor fella and the music from ASPCA commercial started playing in my head. Hopefully now that the sgt test is qusai announced all his ass suckery pays off! Theres more than one way to the top.

The arbitrator has been picked and both sides will be done presenting the issues before Thanksgiving. With any luck there will be a contract by next summer. Almost four years without a contract.....

Between the Merit Hacks and the ones that "are told what to study", figure about 50% is legit.
FOP should demand that in wake of Eddie Johnson and the boys (and gals) turning a blind eye to the recent testing scandal, the first part passing grade should be determined before the test. They should be embarrassed they have to dumb it down. All scores should be posted. And there should be merit requirements: 1. At least 15 years of service (sorry you 10 year wonders, you know damn well there are more qualified vets who are more deserving. 2. Must have an overall score in the top 50% (no more skipping 3,000 officers in line, pick up a G.O. like the rest of us) 3. You must work for your SWORN nominator (sorry Special Ed, you cant hide your picks through Robin Robinson anymore) 4. And most of all, 1 career bite at the merit apple

Everyone knows the list is probably tainted and always has been. This is Chicago. The most corrupt place in America. Corruption is so deeply rooted it effects everything and every place. However, at this point, the tainted parts of the promotion lists were at the top. The people that may have been given the answers to the test have been promoted already. Merit is the biggest problem on the CPD.

The last test in 2013 I didn't give it much thought after passing the written like everyone did. I thought it was all rigged and will be wasting my time. Throughout the years, I seen pure idiots get promoted that I know for 100 percent certain do not have clout, know anybody important to the department or even grew up in Chicago. I regret not taking the 2013 test more serious as so many clueless guys got promoted. I for one will take this test more serious and study with all I got. If I don't get it...oh well...life goes on and I will continue to live comfortably and happy and will just count away the less than 10 years I got to retirement. At least I'll know I gave it my all this time.

I agree. It's total bullshit. I was fortunate to make it in the last class off the 1993 Sgt test & there was no merit. If there was, I probably wouldn't have made it. I completely disagree with merit but because it's here is & ALWAYS will be, I think those promoted meritoriously should all be saved for the last class. Again, I don't like merit but if its gonna be here, why should they get higher seniority which could equate to a better furlough, getting VRI & possibly a bid to a district ahead of those who passed the test legitimately?

What can you say ? 5% of the dept does 100% of the work. If a guy deserves it he deserves it. Better to have a supervisor who’s done the work instead of one who has only read about it.

Out in one of the collar counties, the County Board told the road deputies that they make too much money. The deputies were asking for 1.5 percent a year. The CB said no, you make too much as it is, we will pay for your health insurance but no raise. It's the new trend.

Very true...The first part of the test is all multiple choice on a scan-tron. No reason that you should not know your score or at least a pass/fail by the time you leave! Dont understand how it takes about 3 months before you get your results...what bullshit, oh wait, they have to get all the failing merits in first.

So, I ask you, what's your criteria for being merit?
You give good oral? Your dad is friends with the alderman? Your sister is married to the congressmans son? You went to a noble meeting? Reverend knows the superintendent?

Study join a study group and do your best. If you pass,they cant take that away.
What was the timeline for the last test 1st part,
second part, grades received and first class made.

logging us from PDT or cell phone
When I was new everyone with time on the job told me that all the exams are rigged and don’t even bother with them. I decided to study my ass off and devoted a big chunk of my life to trying to pass the sgt exam. I got a decent score, nothing great, but ended up making it by score. So it is possible. I know plenty of people re studying the actual test, plenty are going to be merit, but there’s a chance still to make it on your own. By studying hard. I know plenty of others that have made it legit too. So please don’t let people talk you out of taking the test. Don’t let them make you believe there’s no hope. There is a chance, so give it all you’ve got. Devote yourself to this one cause for the next few months. It’s something that will seriously pay off for the REST of your life. Your pay increases till you retire and your pension increases by a sizable amount too. It’s worth it. It’s possible. You can slip through the cracks. Good luck to you and hope to see many of you in stripes in the near future.

Biggest problem is the PO ranks are short enough that there needs to be a constant influx of new people....

Whoever is asking about timeline, exam was in October, right after packet with materials was released for part 2 which was in January and final results were out on 24th of July. Big difference is that the exam part one was announced like February/March so over 6 months to study. This exam might actually be in the form of recent detective exam where both portions were given out on same day and it’s going to be a lot of multiple choice/ sort order questions to avoid problems with grading.
Sergeant ?!? No way!! Keep it! Thankless job managing angry millennials and/or bitter coppers that are NEVER happy. And then you have to fake giving a rat’s ass to some LT or higher that’s generally a bigger turd than those you manage yourself. Have you seen the complete morons being pumped out wearing chevrons? Jeez!...Like anything else in life; make friends on this job, network and get to a good unit with good bosses. Make some OT and laugh at the rest of the bullshit this job doles out. CPD management is just awful and, with a few exceptions, are embarrassing to work for/with.

Grade multiple choice while Officers are taking Part 2 of exam . Seal , part 2 , hand carried by an outside agency to an Independent agency to grade Part two . Officers will have score from multiple choice before they leave building .
Make it 60% multiplayer choice , 40% short answer. No Oral interviews, no efficiency counted . If an Officer has a disciplinary, medical abuse history deduct points from their test score .

Everyone should be required to pass part one with a 70 is and above. Qq That would eliminate the highly incompetent ones. If You candidates can’t pass a multiple choice test with a 70; they shouldn’t be eligible to go on to part two. The qclouted slid by with a 60 on part on the last time. The bosses curbed the passing score at the last minute to get them in.
Part one and two should not be taken on the same day. However, part one should be graded the same day before leaving the test. Candidates should know their score before leaving the test. This would alleviate people from studying for part 2 without knowing if they’ve passed part 1.
