The Connected Never Learn

  • A former Chicago police officer who sued the city for retaliating against her when she reported misconduct involving a co-worker was awarded nearly $2 million by a Cook County jury this week.

Laura Kubiak was a veteran officer in the department’s Office of News Affairs in 2012 when she reported to supervisors that a fellow officer, Veejay Zala, had yelled and threatened her at work.

In retaliation for her complaint, Kubiak was transferred to a midnight shift patrolling in “an unsafe neighborhood,” according to a 2015 lawsuit she filed against the city in Cook County Circuit Court.
First up, boo hoo.

Unsafe neighborhood? That's most of them, you were trained, you have a gun, go do your fucking job.

Second, we have never worked at HQ, don't plan on it, and wouldn't under any circumstances we can think of. That being said, even WE have heard about this ass with the thirty-one CR numbers, many of which were filed by other officers and most involving threats against said officers. Why in god's name was he allowed to (A) remain at HQ and (B) work in close proximity with anyone he had provoked to the point of CR's being filed?

And the supervisors? Good lord. Some of this settlement ought to come out of their checks. Always with the eye on the next gifted job rather than actually being capable at the spot they were in.

Two million dollars wasted.

The real funny kicker here is the "dangerous neighborhood" she claims was too rough for her to patrol and work was the actual district she lived in at the time. Yup. Her home district where she lives is safe to live but too dangerous to patrol.

Just went to see if there's a google image of Kubiak. But, I can't find her. SCRUBBED. The invisible whistleblower! This just tells me that the former News Affairs (presumably with wide public exposure) dolly is another one of a long line of "I'm entitled" persons. To be sure, Zala is problematic. But, the cash is more important. To be honest, 2 mil, (less 30% Lawyer fees) spent over 20 or 30 years ain't shit. Plus, no one in the real world will touch her for any kind of job that exposes the employer to more beefs like her proven track record. She should've smacked the asshole in the pie hole, like the real police used to do. They'd be married by now!

$2 mil payout for something that should have been handled administratively and wasn’t.
How many supervisors passed though NewsAffs for bigger better managerial slots?

You never here stuff like this at CPS or the CTA.
Oh, could it be they don’t have a news affairs unit?

- Minimum 5 years in Unsafe Neighborhoods (District) for everyone, every rank.
- Term limits for all inside spots
- News Affairs should be disbanded. It’s bloated, unnecessary and pushes fake news to prop up City Hall anyway.

That payout will have to pass through Council and Grootie FatWallet has more important commurnity settlements pending first.
Groot GoutFoot might just send a jam and jelly of the month club membership and call it tough luck.

Is this the same Laura Kubiak who attended the wake for the relative of a former boyfriend while on duty and got into a physical altercation in the funeral parlor. A 10-1 was called which resulted in her partner injuring his knee which kept him off the job for six months. And after all this bad behavior she's rewarded with a job in news affairs. Laura knows where many bodies are buried, they better hope she does not write a book. Was hoping she would tell all, but it might not be over yet.

Please. This dingbat should have been fired many times over. Theft, battery to PPS. Totally incompetent as an officer. Constantly in some scandal. If anyone wrote a book about her career people would think it's over the top fiction.

Both of those supervisors are the epitome of what female officers hate, some looks and a canny ability to have RELATIONSHIPS with the connected and those of higher rank. Both also are utterly incompetent and always call others when confronted with any problems.

86-5 had 1st Deputy Escalante, Deputy Chief Schmitz, Cmdr. Looney it was a large class, 200 plus.

8/11/2019 09:45:00 PM

Almost all the classes in 86 were huge 200+ classes, and there was a new one almost monthly. People were tripping over each other.

plus she had a brother on the job for a couple of years who always came up with some crazy ass injuries, extreme sun burn, and some wrist injury plus another that I forget. He was collecting 75% he once pointed out and making more money than me and fellow workers. That family sure produced some rotten scammers.

A couple of ex wives, both coppers are now suing CPD concerning a certain swat sgt. This whack job who is known as “Carrot Top” is back to stalking and harassing them. CR#s were covered up in the past. Clown face was protected by serious merit clout. He has already cost the city, thousands of dollars in law suits.

Carrot Top was forced to retire because of a road rage incident in Lake County. He was driving his swat take home vehicle and just happen to have his his wife and kid in the car. He had one of his temper tantrums and pulled his gun on civilian motorists. Police were called and they caught him as he was trying to leave lights and siren.

This dept protects true shit heads.

CPD pensioners love the people at CPD with the goal of staying until turning 63 years of age. We appreciate your work ethic, commitment and contributions to the pension, but someday, once you experience the joy and freedom of being retired, you are going to kick yourself right in the ass for staying after you were maxed-out.

You would brag about have Riccio and Escalante in your academy class, now that’s funny. That’s like name two guys who massaged Rahm’s b_lls and sold out anyone who was on the job.

I wondered where he went. Not a bad guy, but he was different. He definitely did not want to be a police officer.i think he pulled the disability thing in about 1993. He's been on it for 25 years.

Kubiak May have been blown off with her complaints about this goof but she sure sounds like a pampered, entitled one in this lawsuit.
The “bosses” involved are also pampered, entitled and incompetent ones.

8/11/2019 11:08:00 AM

The way the law is written, you aren't allowed to retaliate because someone in a protected class (female) made a complaint about sexual harassment. She was able to show that she, and not the harasser in this case, suffered an adverse event by getting an undesirable transfer and change in shift. Some of the courts are taking a harder look at "adverse events" and not just monetary loss. I ended up working an undesirable shift after a pig put his hands where they didn't belong. Good for her on her win.

Speak for yourself, not COD pensioners. I am retired and could care less about what any officer does regarding his pension. For different reasons officers decide how long they want to work and at what age they want to retire. That’s their choice, not mine

The same sgt one who put a junior swat officer in the hospital with two black eyes, two cracked ribs and a collapsed lung? The injured copper never filed a law suit because he liked the OT on swat. Dumb ass.

Did I say he was so upset he was trying to determine who it is.

I'd hate to see what your definition of a bad guy is. Everyone pretty much hated the guy. 8 hours a day spent on trying to get a free meal, harassing female motorists. The rest of us had no use for him. And his bogus disability scam should have been investigated.

Never worked in the car with him, but worked the same watch for the minute or two he was around. Never heard those things. Sounds like bad news. Glad I was never paired with him.
