Someone got the scoop on this? Supposedly the media already has the event taped:
- Get this. Commander of 7 forced some officers to go to an event without their weapons and police vests because the owner of the event said police presence in uniform is to intimidating. They want us at the event but think our guns and vests are bad publicity? It’s supposed to air on tv soon.
The gun and vest are part of the uniform. Ordering officers to appear anywhere without them should be an automatic CR along with a labor grievance.

It is not unlawful, stop with jumping on this word. Its like the demorats jumping on racist. There is nothing illegal about an officer being unarmed.However it is wrong to the Nth degree.It is unsafe even dangerous in today's environment.Refusal is appropriate. An unsafe labor practice grievance is appropriate ,but it isn't unlawful there is no state or federal statute requiring a peace officer to be armed.

If true, then this commander is a moron. Without guns and vests are they even the “police”? What are they going to be good for if shits the fan? They would have been safer and better off sending them in regular clothes without any police patches since the uniform can be offensive too. The ball-less commander should have told the community ‘organizer’ either he gets the whole police package or he doesn’t, and that’s it, take it or leave it. If true, old man rod needs to be dumped back to detention aide status.

As a citizen, mother, and someone coming from a family where all the men were in labor unions, reading this is alarming. It makes me fear for your safety, but also makes me wonder what it’s going to take for you all to stand up for yourselves. How could any of you allow an incompetent supervisor send you out on the street without an essential part of your uniform that protects your very life? And why aren’t you in contract arbitration after the CTU got the promise of a 14% raise?
I am a frequent reader of this blog and the only thread I’ve ever read where someone had the gumption to make his superiors own their own stupidity was the guy who stood up at the Compstat inquisition recently and framed his response so that it made it clear that what brass was demanding and trying to hold HIM accountable for was inconsistent with policy. And the only public voices I ever hear that make sense is the guy who runs this blog and Martin Prieb. Either your FOP is incompetent, or in cahoots with the politicians you come here every day to complain about. Either way, the men and women who serve and protect me and other citizens deserve better. If the “community”, who can’t seem to function in society or manage to do anything remotely useful, can come out of their substance-induced comas long enough to organize and protest, why can’t you?

B ut, I do recall back in the day under Leroy Martin during the annual exempt party at the Hilton. Leroy had a dozen or more female police officers wear red dresses and act as escorts at the ball and get peoples drinks. So, my point is that some people will really kiss the ring to keep their good spots.

Where exactly do all these high priced Deputy Chiefs, Chiefs, assistance Deputy Superintendents, Deputy Superintendents come into play. What does a Deputy Chief with his sworn police officer/s sitting outside his office do for eight hours. Obviously supervising commanders under him isn’t one of the things he does. I think a civilian could handle moving papers from the IN box to the OUT box just as well as a sworn police officer.

Back in the day, I went to events and took off my coat & vest for my comfort.

She called Robin Robinson who immediately called the lieutenant on duty that day and asked why the officers were in uniform, armed, and with their vests on. The lieutenant told her that the general order stated that they must be so attired and that he would not have officers endanger themselves for a media event. Robin Robinson hit the roof and said that she had many events where she got the officers to go without their vests and without their sidearms. The lieutenant held his ground and within a few minutes received a call from downtown. The lieutenant explained himself and surprisingly the boss downtown backed the lieutenant.
The Commander of 007 may have his detractors (for good or for ill), but this was not a request made by him.

With all of the mass shootings happening now how would the department look if a mass shooting took place and the Media found out that there were several officers there without their weapons. Was assigned to a street fair and the neighborhood organizer, who was also a sjw, asked the sergeant to have us leave our firearms in our cars! The sergeant replied firmly, directly and without hesitation. The sergeant was not caustic, but he explained why the organizer's request was absolutely denied. I am still so very proud of my sergeant, may he RIP.
Do you guys have any representation out there? The superior giving these orders would be fired if this happened anywhere else.
Were there metal detectors and wands checking people for weapons before going on?

Years ago cops at the airports wore no vests and didn't carry their batons. Told to leave them at home because it was too intimidating.

remember why you have that vest and of course your duty weapon. i remember all the police that were murdered in the 70 s before the cheap ass city broke down and bought vests. i knew two of their family members. these appeasers are completely insane. im not a fan of militarized police but the days of andy and berney are long over and the police need all the protections they can get not less. when society becomes less violent the police can be more lightly armed. ill not hold my breath.

The department hired to fill a made up spot in 2016. She is the Director of Community Affairs. The title is the civilian equivalent to a commander. She's paid around $155,000 per year. I have no clue what she's supposed to be doing.
