No Kidding Doc

Shouldn't this have been addressed by the Legislature back when everyone saw dollar signs?
  • Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said Friday she’s concerned about a surge in marijuana use among young people when recreational weed becomes legal on Jan. 1 — and the time to start preparing for it is now.

“All substances — marijuana included — have major impacts on brains that are still developing. And brains are still developing up until ... the age of 25,” Arwady said.

“Our big focus, as it’s been for tobacco, is going to be on youth and making sure that kids, their families, their teachers, their pediatricians understand some of the risks.”

Arwady said she was on a call with the Chicago Public Schools this week about education campaigns and school services that must be put in place in case there’s a surge of CPS students showing up at school high — or, even worse, driving after smoking or ingesting marijuana products.
The more scientists test and monitor long term weed usage, the worse it seems to be, especially among the younger segments of society. Hopefully, the studies showing weed smokers end up sterile have some truth to them.

I think there’s a discrimination suit here unless they’re willing to do away with the policy of not allowing CPD/LEO to smoke. If legislators don’t think it’s a drug for civilians, why is it a drug for LEO’s or the military? The speak with forked tongue.

LOL. Day late, dollar short. Weed's here - has been for decades. It's already in the schools, kids are already showing up high. They're already driving high, etc. It's ILLEGAL NOW, they're not supposed to have it and do.

When it's LEGAL, they're still not supposed to have it, and will.

Forget wasting time and money on worrying about it.

Anything, including water, if done in excess is detrimental to one's health. Is brain function not affected by alcohol abuse? So why is that accepted?. The government tried to ban alcohol and all that was accomplished was explosive expansion of organized crime and the violence they caused. Marijuana has been used for thousands of years for a variety of legitimate purposes. It wasn't until it was deemed evil by the media and government, who were both bought and paid for by a private corporation who saw hemp as a threat to their profit margin, that marijuana became culturally unacceptable. People will abuse it and suffer the consequences. A small minority just like alcohol. Marijuana isn't for everyone. Alcohol isn't for everyone. Firearms aren't for everyone. If you believe alcohol should be legal with the tens of thousands of deaths it is directly responsible for every year, then why wouldn't you support marijuana legalization? The federal government says you cannot posses a firearm if you're a marijuana user. However, if you're an alcoholic, no problem? Which of those two is more likely to be violent? Simply because the norms and mores of our society in the past have vilified marijuana is no reason to not view the issue objectively with a modern perspective. And just because it is part of the liberal agenda does not make it wrong. I would much rather see my fellow officers have the ability to go home after dealing with some shit at work, eat a pot brownie and relax watching some tv than hit the bar and get hammered. Marijuana shouldn't be a regular coping mechanism but it can be every now and then and it's a hell of a lot better for you than booze. The generations before us that built this great country did a lot of things right. The criminalization of marijuana isn't one of them.

The solution is simple. Raise the age for legal consumption to 26 yoa. By that time the brains will be developed. It’s all about the safety of our children. If the pols can set arbitrary minimum age limits for tobacco products, driver licenses, alcoholic beverages, and firearm purchases all under the guise of age responsibility, then cannabis consumption can have an arbitrary minimum age for usage.

No, but they test for THC. Good quality CBD has no THC. Unfortunately, you'll have no way of knowing unless you have it tested first. Or until you drop hot, but by then it's too late.

Yes, nothing like legalizing a drug , enabling smoking, making it against the law for people under 18 to purchase the drug and then hoping for the best that their plan will not increase the use of the drug? Great thinking and especially in the face of medical research that shows marijuana use is harmful to the brain and development. Data from the states that have legalized recreational use of weed show that the majority of weed used is purchased from the illegal market. Tax revenues are not what they expected and it has not hurt the criminalelement.

Well, it would be a good argument. Marijuana is a class 1 narcotic and against federal law. Private companies can also drug test for weed and fire you for using it despite any Illinois legalization . Same goes for police.

Retired ISP here. Drunks are one of the most dangerous things to encounter on the highway. The stoners tend to drive almost too carefully, occasionally violating the minimum speed regulation on the interstates while trying to get where they're going. Texting is almost as bad as DUI. The roads are not safe, but I don't think marijuana users will make much of an impact come January 1st. Time will tell.

Same scientists that studied cow farts?
The doctor is about 50 years past her assessment.
In another 50 years from now they’ll figure it out all over again, but let’s blame Trump for now.

For these last 50 years Democrats systematically knocked down, forced out just about every factory here to keep pollutants out. They didn’t give twoshits what was being made, paint, window fans, leg warmers and even electricity, everything was affecting the kids they said.
If the lead in the air, the paint and drinking water wasn’t enough to alter the developing brains of kids, the parental use of toxic habit forming legal weed combos sure will, huh ? And only now a month to go into law it was never given a logical thought.
But legal weed equates to votes from the brain altered electorate.

And again, street weed will always be cheaper, more potent and readily available.
Not sure what the woke acting (interim) health commissioner is advocating here.
Implement an over 21 WOID - Weed Owner Identification Card, maybe a local weed ban?
Weed is bad. Guns is bad.
The ban on the AR 15 and ammo in CookCo sure had a great impact on public health.

Goofs.

I (like others here) predict legal weed in IL is going to be a BIG fail for the foreseeable future. I just checked the price of high-test medical at the Mundelein dispensary vs high-test at a dispensary I'm familiar with in Glendale, CO. Mundelein = $476 p/oz vs $200 p/oz in 'rado!

Me, I'll take the 17 hour ride and bring back enough to last me six months. I'll take in the scenery and maybe even do a little skiing while I'm at it.

As has been pointed out here, if you're a weed smoker here in the land of Lincoln, you already have a dealer and I'm guessing that his/her prices are closer to 'market' than what IL is going to charge.

Ya, BS. Cannabis is not of the western culture. Alcohol is, and has been for 10,000 years. That's why prohibition didn't work. EVERY European culture grew up with alcohol.
THe French with wine, Germans with beer, etc. Look back in those cultures - you think great-grandpa smoked bud? Doubt it. If you don't think legalization of cannabis is going to up the odds your kids will be potheads your fucking whacked. Alchohol is different, there are repercussions - like a sever hangover. You remember when you were a kid who got drunk and swore off alcohol the next day? Numerous times? Cannabis? NO HANGOVER.
