Wow. Just Wow (Rumor)

Someone asked why the Department kept extending the deadline to pay the fee for hte Sergeant's Exam. This would appear to answer that question:
  • SCC, you know who in years past, we'd have tens of thousands of people signing up for the entrance exam, and how it fell off to less than 2,000 people per test three or four times a year?

Well, after weeks to register and two separate deadlines to pay your fee, a grand total of 875 (+/- a few) people are properly registered for the upcoming sergeant exam.

That's it. They've made the spot so undesirable that no one wants it.
875? And the lists usually last until around 450 people get promoted.

Someone has to track this one down, because this is a disaster if true.

There are only around 1,200 sergeants and traditionally only around 900 take the test anyway. Many sign up and never show on test day. Many sign up just so they don’t have to go to work.

Still a low number but alot don't have time on the job and MANY are going to be leaving. Like me... later!

Without knowledgeable sergeants on the street this dept will implode. So many officers can't make a simple on-scene decision and call for a supervisor. They are afraid of making a mistake or a complaint. Most can't articulate RAS, or PC. How many could do a DUI? I hand back about half of all TSSS cards for being incomplete. It will be the blind leading the blind.

Want a day off as a patrolman? Call 5 minutes before roll call.
Want a day off as a sergeant? It has to be in a month before and if there aren’t enough sergeants that day it’s denied.

That’s one example. I could give a hundred.

Does anyone have a guess? With the attrition of Sgts retiring or being promoted coupled with unassigned positions to fulfill Consent Decree ratios, what is a realistic number of possible hires off this next test? Thanks

In hindsight and reflecting on this job for me for the past 25 years.

Thats how much becoming a Sgt. SUCKS! 🚔

Shit...
I'll take the job. The only thing holding me back now is not having the college requirement. Been a cop over a quarter of a century and pretty much know the job inside and out. I can put in another 5-7 years on this miserable job and babysit the newbies. And before anyone chimes in about my not having college, I've been raising a family, paying a mortgage and taxes and paying for my children's education through their college years. So they wouldn't have massive debts when they've graduated. Family first then the job.

If the rumors of a 09 Dec class of sergeants is true I anticipate getting notified soon. Only I’m gonna tell Personnel they can move on to the next person on the list as I’ll be declining the promotion. Yeah it’s nearly a 20K annual bump with the differential. Yeah it’s an extra 45 minutes a day. Yeah I’d be able to sell back 200 hours a year. Yeah the pension would be +/- a G-note more a month.

But you can’t put a price on peace of mind. It simply isn’t worth the money to babysit 10, 12, 14 or more millennial assholes any given tour. In a shitty district. On a shitty watch. With shitty seniority. Seriously… I have never seen more inept people coming on the job than have in the past 10 to 15 years. No one can make a simple decision without conferring with the Sgt for direction. They cry when they don’t get a newer car. They cry when when they’re told they can’t have DOH with all of two years on the job. They cry if they can’t get an hour or two on the end three or more times a week. They cry if they’re assigned the hospital detail. Many can’t be bothered to show up for rollcall on time, and when they do show up their faces are glued to their goddamn smart phones.

And I’ll be damned if I’m gonna get caught in the trick bag because some entitled snowflake tried to run game being they’re too smart for their own good or get dragged into something like LMQ/JVD for simply approving a fucking case report. 20 or 25 years ago? Hell yeah, gimme them stripes because I’ll shoot for lieutenant next test. Now? Fuck that noise. It’s strictly by-the-numbers policing, flying under the radar and doing the absolute bare minimum until 55.

The school teachers can all take off, no days off denied. This should result in huge pay increase for police.

“However, due to increasing numbers of teachers who are opting to use personal days to attend that day, we arrived at a point where we became concerned about classroom coverage and a safe and orderly day of learning," Thalheimer said. “We were beginning to exhaust our substitute pool and had more and more classroom settings that we could not cover.”

I’ve been a sergeant over 20 years. Back when I took the test there were thousands who is signed up for the exam. In fact they had to have multiple locations to administer the test along with numerous test times because of manpower coverage in the district. In fact it was so stringent the application process that if you did not properlyFill out the application and get it in in a timely manner you would not be able to take the exam. Simple task such as following instructions it’s quite indicative of the individual and their ability to pass exam. If I recall between 5000 and 7000 officers signed up in the past to take the exam. Numerous locations numerous start times, actually changing start times in the districts to cover the man power shortage was indicative of how many actually had signed up for the sergeants test in years past. Now it just seems that there is no interest, no desire to go anywhere in this dead job.

You know what's funny about this job? Funny how when a guy (pre sgt) talks about how much the jobs sucks, doesn't do ISRs, write tickets (parkers/movers) nor make arrests then they make SGT then all of a sudden the job is "legit" and they expect you to do the numbers.

People used to pay alderman for the job, now they can't give it away.

Those were different days. A Sgt. didn't have to babysit the troops, policemen were pretty much out there on their own, and made decisions without bothering the sergeant. Besides, the good Sgt was too busy making his rounds as bagman.

I thought I read in newspaper weeks ago that it was the CPD entrance exam that had less than 1000 people sign up.

Drop the college requirement no shortage of applicants.

That is good news , at least 875+or- a few can actually follow instructions to participate in the upcoming Sergeants Exam .
Now if Charlie Beck would require the multiple choice to count for 60% and not be a pass/Fail , CPD might actually promote Sergeants that are qualified to supervise .

Beck should demote every exempt that was promoted meritoriously to Sgt and Lt .
Hire qualified exempts ,
Captain rank must go
Inspectors must go , assign them to a box .

They can keep that shit sgt job. I was doing real police work like a boss in 006 for years! Racked up 8 honorables and 2 complementary letters. I was the real police in 006. Now I made detective in A/S and these Sgts that I deal with got no knowledge of what’s what. It’s embarrassing. The departments spiraling down the toilet drain. And it’s blatantly obvious.

Are you serious? You my friend are as soft as puppy shit.

Lowering standards is one of the reasons reports have to be kicked back repeatedly for certain legal requirements to be articulated. Reading, writing and speaking to a certain standard it more important now than ever.

Think about , it's a good thing
CPD has at least 800+ Police Officers,Detective ,ET,K9 etc that actually are serious about being promoted to sergeant, making CPD a better organization.
We know they can read , follow directions and took time to apply and pay for the promotional exam .
Now if Charlie Beck would require a passing score of 80% to take Part 2 of exam and grade the multiple choice part on sight .
require a urine test on the way out of part 1.
