But Chicago may be unique in providing a police detail to former mayors, sometimes long after they’ve left office.
More than eight years after Richard M. Daley walked out of City Hall for the last time as its chief executive, the Chicago Police Department continues to provide him with a taxpayer-funded security detail.
Police also have assigned a detail to Rahm Emanuel, who left office nearly six months ago.
Which our readers have pointed out on a near-daily basis.

On top of the free security detail, both dickhead ex mayors collect big speaking engagement fees. I was working security at an event and tiny's black suv pulls up right in front. He gets out along with his two guards. After ten minutes of mingling he goes to the podiums to give his speech to the convention goers. Twenty minutes later he sneaks out to the suv on his way home after getting 10 or 20 grand.
The Tribune only talked about the big names. I am willing to bet that there are other bodyguard/driver details out there that never pass through the detail unit but come directly from various units. They used to used the Intelligence Unit for some of these.

Here is a crazy idea: What if an elected Official really put forth an effort to make the entire City a better place for all of us to live? What if they didn't cater to the wealthy developers and the connected Lawyers? How would things be if that same person didn't focus on their "legacy" to inflate their ego or sell the City assets for a small bag of gold? What if they stopped taking from the workers to give to those uninterested in working?
If that person stopped catering to the dregs of Society, perhaps they wouldn't need so much protection becuase they would be universally loved and respected for being an upstanding individual.
We can only dream of such a person making it into Office in this town.

Why does the mayor need millions and millions of dollars worth of security from Chicago police officers who are paid way above their rank? If she thinks the city is so safe so great she thinks her police top echelon the gold star club have it under control but yet she needs all this protection. After he quit mayoring, Daley came to the airport every now and then with his sole aide, nice enough guy, said Daley didn’t want any special treatment and waited in line alone like any other ordinary old guy.
Can’t say the same about the world traveling family man Rahm and entourage.
