- Chicago police are questioning a person of interest after 13 people were wounded, four of them critically, during a shooting inside a memorial gathering early Sunday in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.
More people were wounded in the shooting than at any other in the city since at least 2013, when 13 people were shot in Back of the Yards, according to data gathered by the Tribune.
The violence began about 12:40 a.m. at a house party in the 5700 block of South May Street commemorating the birthday of a man who died in a previous shooting. Someone at the party opened fire, sending 13 people to area hospitals, according to Chicago police.

Caught up in the dragnet were five Poles, four Irish, a Korean and a Jewish couple who happened to be looking for directions to Skokie and were not actually singing Christmas tunes....obviously. The ACLU applauded the Department for being so woke.

My step father gave his home in Englewood to his daughter and her husband as a gift. They sold it and moved to Country Club Hills, back in the late 60's, early 70's and she said that they were going to have to move again in a couple of years and the next stop was Indiana. The home in Englewood was a typical frame home in good condition and the Country Club Hills home was a ranch on a slab and was quite nice. I was like 14 back then and wondered why they'd buy a home in an area that they'd have to move away from so fast.

Hey, I grew up in Englewood, Garfield and Racine. We never had that level of violence back in the 50's, and 60's. Matter of fact, I don't recall ever hearing of a shooting, let alone a mass shooting. I used to travel through the black areas, south of 59th st to get to Rainbow Beach. I was never bothered, never a problem. What went wrong? What happened? I do know that when our neighborhood changed in the late 60's, we had to move out because the crime and personal assaults became intolerable . Whites were the target.

Maybe the Englewood of your lifetime but not mine. Grew up a block away from 57th and May. I can't tell you how many winter nights we spent playing hockey at Moran Park which is right there at 57th and Racine or summer nights just hanging around on the Boulevard. Until the late 60's Englewood, at least north of the railroad tracks, was a place where kids grew up knowing their neighbors, playing baseball and becoming useful citizens. Parents knew each other and were out on their porchs because I don't think anyone had air conditioning. I don't think there was a neighborhood around that had more kids killed in Vietnam than Visitation Parish. Every time I drive thru the area I have to shake my head when I see what has become of the old hood. You drive around and most of the houses of your friends are gone. Solid two flats that could have survived the Berlin bombing but couldn't survive today's inhabitants are gone. But of course everything wrong with the Englewood of today is our fault.
Obviously I'm an old retired guy, so back to the Englewood of today. I feel for the young coppers. The memorial was not for the victim of instant justice, but in celebration of the anticipation of his monthly SSDI check that they would have accepted for the next twenty nine years. The former police commander had reached out to the communerty and demonstrated how it could It increase their revenue by failing to notify the racist government of the carjacker's death. As in other police department outreach pilot programs of late, it was a failure. Recent programs such as the after school taxi and babysitting service, the importing of ammunition from faraway lands via express delivery, the social promotion exam study groups, and deep dipping from the legit promotion list for those that display special talents and the willingness to complete messy tasks to their ultimate climax. For one, there is no conceal carry reciprocity for any other state's residents in the cesspool known as Illinois. Many other states meet Illnois' requirements, 16 hours class, range time, background checks, finger prints, etc. There's states that honor Illinois' CCL, why not the other way around?
Now such wont reduce criminal turds shooting/killing other criminal turds, but might help and give some law abiding citizens/humans from wherever a better fighting chance to protect themselves, as well as a deterrent to committing heinous acts against others. Maybe the Englewood of your lifetime but not mine. Grew up a block away from 57th and May. I can't tell you how many winter nights we spent playing hockey at Moran Park which is right there at 57th and Racine or summer nights just hanging around on the Boulevard. Until the late 60's Englewood, at least north of the railroad tracks, was a place where kids grew up knowing their neighbors, playing baseball and becoming useful citizens. Parents knew each other and were out on their porchs because I don't think anyone had air conditioning. I don't think there was a neighborhood around that had more kids killed in Vietnam than Visitation Parish. Every time I drive thru the area I have to shake my head when I see what has become of the old hood. You drive around and most of the houses of your friends are gone. Solid two flats that could have survived the Berlin bombing but couldn't survive today's inhabitants are gone. But of course everything wrong with the Englewood of today is our fault.
Obviously I'm an old retired guy, so back to the Englewood of today. I feel for the young coppers. The easiest thing to do is blame somebody else when you don't want to take responsibility for your own actions. All I can say is stay safe and stay fetal. It's not like the old days. There is no support from the top.

Yes, you want to make fun, but there is a lot of truth in this statement. The robberies and assaults on people who lived from Garfield to 58th st and East of Ashland were just too much and were an almost daily occurrence. However, on the other hand the area was not just some sweet, crime free utopia. The white gangs at Garfield and Halsted, Garfield and Ashland and 57th Racine were dangerous and mean. They would attack black people who were doing nothing but waiting for a bus. The racial tensions were high. The problem was the gangs, not the average citizens black or white. I lived through those changed.
To 8:14am. I lived at 55th near Damen , St Basils parish in the early 60s. Altar boy and all. I knew all the prayers in Latin - didn't know what the English version was at the time, but I could recite all that stuff in latin. Had to know it, or sister what's her name would crucify you for sure! Learned to skate with borrowed skates at Micek park. Drove by the old place a while ago. Left with a tear in my eyes. This certainly isn't the Chicago I grew up in. Left Chicago 45 years ago for the suburbs, left Cook County 20 years ago for the next county south. I'd leave Illinois but for the kids and grandkids. I do get in the city 1-2 times a month, but try to avoid it when I can. A BIG THANK YOU to the CPD for all you've done to keep a lid on things. Also a shout out to the big, burly officer that put a foot in my ass when he caught me throwing snowballs at a bus on 63rd. Never tagged a bus again I tell ya. Merry Christmas to all and stay safe.

Exempts have a lot of restrictions against working side jobs. They're pretty much limited to academia, and have to get permission.

CPD and City Hall just plays too much politicing when hiting and promoting its Officers. There simply are way too many Officers on the job who just should not be police officers anywhere, much less in Chicago, a Combat Zone of a City. Years ago CPD hired lots of Military Vets and Cops from the suburbs, who had at least some working knowledge of what policework entailed. Nowadays, the whiner Generation is on the job and failing fast, and the only true real bosses left are left as babysitters, not supervisors.
