Me and my family will be leaving in less than 5 years! The "redder the better"
Even though there are fewer people the taxes keep rising.
That's because the people that need government services are rising or even stagnant, the people that pay for them are voting with their feet, taking their money away with them.
I thing the legalization of pot is the kill shot for the state. In effect Illinois is saying the only growth industry is dope. And the State has pinned its financial future on it.
With an uneducated unemployable populace, get them stoned to keep them happy.

As parents pull their children out of Catholic schools due to rising costs of tuition. The remaining families are hit with higher tuition rates to cover the schools losses. More families leave and then these schools close. Thereby further causing their extinction.
Lived in Chicago my entire life and am getting ready to leave. I've had enough of the liberal politicians, progressive half wit neighbors, and efforts to move members of "tha communerty" into my formerly quiet neighborhood.

Moved to Northern Arkansas 15 years ago (The Ozarks) after retiring (73-2004) 31 years . Best move we ever made, NO shitheads, no crime , just nice POLITE people and their children ! I am 3 years from retirement and want to stay, however I can move 20 miles east into Indiana and pay thousands less in fee's and taxes, why stay. The bottom line is to keep the money that I've earned as long as I can.

Met up with a retired Missouri officer last summer on a trip to Oklahoma. We have a 20 ft camping trailer we take along. He asked what license plates cost for the camper. Well, they were $18 per year, now $118 per year.
He said Missouri has a PERMANENT, non-commercial trailer plate for a one-time fee of $53.00.
Yep. $53 bucks forever.
One small example of why people are leaving.
I have four adult age boys. They all live and work out of state. It wasn't a political statement, they just found better opportunities elsewhere. Ironic, isn't it?
I never though that I would say this, but after generations of my family living in Chicago as soon as I retire, I'm gone too.

The vast majority of people leaving aren't big consumers of Gov't services and can afford to get out leaving fewer people to pay for the leaches. After my last kid graduates from high school next year (Catholic because I can't send her to the shit hole public school) we are leaving. You guys and girls know there is much more than Chicago out there, yeah it's skyline is pretty, yeah the food is phenomenal, there are still some good places to live (for now), there are plenty of museums, art galleries, shows, dive joints and whatever else you could want are all still there. None of those things were enough to keep us there. After retiring I found a place in 4 months in the southern part of Tennessee with acreage and it's beautiful. People here are just happy, there are genuinely kind and welcoming. If I want to see a city It's a short ride to Nashville. My property taxes are less than a quarter what they were in Chicago and I own about 20 acres with a forest, hills, springs, wildlife (Deer and Turkey) everywhere you look! There is more to life than Chicago and you can get it for yourselves, just drop the politics and attitude at the border when you leave. God bless you all, especially my old partners still in 011 and Gangs North!

It is my belief that L. Lightfoot is a transitional mayor. Years from now, her service might actually be looked at as not so terrible. However, those who replace her are likely to be from the radical & progressive factions that are assembling at the gate. Remember how quickly Detroit declined once Coleman Young took office. This city’s descent is already underway — look at the crime, the declining home values, the need for enormous new revenue, junk bond status, and the increasing race identity politics. The option to move to an area that better reflects your values and culture, should be considered.

Lateral transfer at 20k less then your making now might actually be a raise. Lets do the math, good public schools at new job, save 10k or more of private schooling, real estate taxes $7,000 less that for a larger home and much more land at least $3,000 less in overall taxes, sales tax, gas tax, expensive parking, ridicules auto license fees ect. No grid lock and a much better class of people to deal with on your job.
What will you miss? Vienna hot dogs, decent pizza and maybe family. But two trips a year to stock up on the dogs and pizza and a family visit and your all set. In fact once the family sees how nice it is out of the city they might be joining you and Portillo's is expanding all over the country, you can learn to make a good pizza with a little tail and error. So intact your plan B and never look back except to wonder what took you so long

This is a likely scenario - commercial, industrial and multi-family properties recently fell over 4% in value for Chicagoland - every other major city saw better gains - why? Because property assessments are being significantly increased for these properties. Still won’t be enough money for pension shortfalls and increases will eventually be jammed on residential too. Think about it - a 4% loss in the strongest US economy in my lifetime - I’m pretty old by the way. Chicagoland will be hurting big time in the not too distant future and we’ll continue to loose people. So sad. Loved living here most of my life but I cannot fathom the taxes that are coming. I wish some Democrats would actually care.

Tennessee is great. Problem is the secret has been out for the last 10 years. Looked at property there 5-6 years ago and it was somewhat affordable. Now it's just insane prices South of Nashville.

If you think it was bad before read the new list of additional state taxes. People are going to be running when the realize the extent of the taxes. License plates are going from $108 to $158 almost a 50% increase but don’t worry our 2% raise will cover it
