- A barricade situation in East Garfield Park has been deemed resolved after a woman who was thought to be a hostage told police officers she was ok.
Police first responded to reports of a domestic disturbance about 12:50 a.m. Thursday at the home in the 200 block of North California Avenue, Chicago police said. The SWAT team was called after hearing reports that there was an armed man inside who was refusing to let his girlfriend leave.
The SWAT team left the home about 4 a.m. after officers made contact with the woman through a window, police said. The woman reportedly told them that she was ok and uninjured.
So someone can come to a window, tell SWAT, "I'm fine" and SWAT just goes away?
No idea if this is just half-assed reporting or a new policy being implemented. It would certainly seem to cut down on the flash-bangs, doors destroyed and tear gas expenditures for starters.

You treat us like assholes, you get the minimum from all but the green horns who think this unit is legit. There’s about a dozen or so of us on promo lists ready to bail from this shit show they call swat, just riding it out waiting for the classes to be announced. They are punishing us for daring to speak out and drop paper regarding how fucked up this place is with the cars, equipment, special clout heavy friends making it to the unit without actually passing portions of the testing, lack of training and shitty supervisors.

My idea to save on tear gas is to just flash copies of property tax bills to any offenders. Even if they don't own a home SWAT can mock them that someday they may, then look at what is in store!
NO need for gas to make the tear flows... Just showing that paper makes grown tough guys sob and bawl their eyes out with water works.
It’s not a new thing. In 8 we had a swat incident where the guy barricaded himself in his ex’s house. The ex called police but did not want to sign complaints. After a 7 hr standoff with swat, swat demobilized and went home. Issue was left unresolved with only a case report being done and ex unable to enter her home.
So nobody in that house knew swat was out there? No one in that house can come to the door, open it and say nothing is wrong? Why didn't the "man" inside say come in and check everything out?? Sounds like a lot of Bullshit and wasting police time!

I would say yes. I've responded to domestics where they refused to open the door and gave me the "everything is all good" from the window. I guess it's a case by case basis, totality of the circumstance type thing.

As a victim of domestic violence whose husband was also the police, he had cold-cocked me and the copper who showed up after the neighbor called 911, the copper who showed up was a friend of his. I remember laying on the bathroom floor barely conscious and after my ex-husband told him everything was ok, he left. I remember laying on the floor in the bathroom feeling totally and utterly hopeless. This was in the 80's before a supervisor had to be called and a c.r. initiated. it still affects me to this day. I know swat responds to a lot of bullshit, but the victim should be extricated to a safe place and be allowed to tell her story away from the offender. I would never, ever, have trusted her to say everything is ok out a window.

We can only hope that the Community remains just as unorganized and cowardly as they have always been. This kind of training and implementation would not have not worked out well in the sandbox. The potential for problems should a muzzie with a vest be encountered is obviously not seriously considered. Obviously the love and affection the community feels will preclude any such occurrence.
Three hours to resolve the caper with a 1-B or did they do a GOCR & tie the VIN to a rock and toss it up to her?

There's a million what-ifs. What if you try to force your way in, escalate things when everything was ghetto fabulous and then everything goes to shit? Fuck that. It's a totality of the circumstance, case by case thing and in this case nothing came of them leaving when they did so good call.
When it happened in Rogers Park a couple reported they were going to be killed by a family member the officers saved the victims and were chastised at roll call by the powers that be because they took the the terrified victims at their word and save them. The white shirts have no love for blue shirt heroism, Stay Fetal!

Don't listen to that imposter. The unit has its problems, no different than anywhere else in the department. That said it's still a great place to be.

Take the test, If it was Worse then patrol they would be bidding out. 017, 001 & the airports have had openings recently. I didn’t see any takers from 353. There is always someone who listens to the grumblings in a unit, internalizes them and becomes miserable. Try to look at the positives and stay away from those people. Good Luck
Yep, I was there and it’s exactly what happened. Not only that, but the boyfriend who beat the woman and had a gun was still inside and swat did nothing and left the scene. I’m truly glad I was not that Lieutenant or Sergeant making the call to just 19P the job. I just hope I never have to call swat because they ould definitely not come to my aid with all these bosses scared to make a decision.
They made a judgement call. Who are you to second guess them? you were not there.

I have no use for swat. They missed two offenders on a search, Both shit heads had shot at a police commander, both were armed and could have killed my partner and I. Fuck shit swat.
is she dead yet. at least they came. same upstairs, twice. took a lot to get them to come, by then the guy up there shoved heavy furniture against the door and the screaming has gone silent. they always come to my door, so that guy can be sure it was me who called. just great.
I’ve been on swat for 3 years. This place sucks really bad. Most of the white shirts here care only for themselves. The LT is all about being a merit captain. The equipment is shitty. I’m not sure if my rifle even works. We hardly train. OT is good but with this schedule I never get to see my family. Not worth it anymore.

Best decision you ever made. Don’t even bother wasting your time. The elite training staff decides who comes on. It’s based on a personality contest and if you are a BFF of one of the trainers. The testing process is not legit. Lots of shady bs that goes on here.

If Tommy made the call, it was a good one. No one got hurt, no doors needed to be breached, no flashbangs, no unnecessary drama, no one has called the police back to that location. Those of you who want to sit there in the quiet of your mama's dark basement binging on your high calorie energy drinks on your MAC and bash SWAT need to get a life. And for those of you who claim to be on SWAT and have posted here about how miserable you are in your current assignment, there are PAR forms available to whisk you away to any one of the 22 districts that have a beat car with your name on it anytime.
