Detective Numbers

This is all preliminary, subject to change, part of a rumor, etc:
  • Area 1 - 243 Detectives
    106 Violent, 73 Property, 20 midnight, 27 SVU, +/-17 Misc
  • Area 2 - 198 Detectives
    88 Violent, 51 Property, 18 midnight, 24 SVU, +/-17 Misc
  • Area 3 - 159 Detectives
    51 Violent, 51 Property, 18 midnight, 22 SVU, +/-17 Misc
  • Area 4 - 188 Detectives
    91 Violent, 42 Property, 18 midnight, 20 SVU, +/-17 Misc
  • Area 5 -137 Detectives
    47 Violent, 37 Property, 16 midnight, 20 SVU, +/-17 Misc
No one is sure how the process is going to work. Our comment sections have a bunch of different versions. It'll play out shortly and then the Grievances/Lawsuits can start.

One version has FOP signing off on screwing a few hundred detectives out of assignments, watches and furloughs. That could be the impetus to a wholesale decertification effort.

That jackass McCarthy destroyed the Detective Division. Experience and dedication are a thing of the past. Camaraderie does not exist. Don’t expect too much with another reorganization by a merit hack administration. The workers have no fucks left to give.

The numbers of SVU Detectives are shit! Not even half adequate! SVU has to handle youth, the mentally ill & people with developmental delays, senior citizens, and certain other matters. Where is SVU supposed to borrow from of they run short? It isn't like any other specialty in the Detective Unit! The only conceivable way this works out is if a certain percentage of the violent crimes folks get cross trained for SVU, and then the brass gets more manpower in unit 079, and 079 can share their manpower with SVU.

If they were going to mess with furloughs and watches, why didn’t they just wait until the end of the year to open things up? They could patch together the units for a couple periods and sort it all out for the first period of 2021. Twenty years probably won’t get you into Area 5, so I’m gonna love to see how it plays out if they try to change everyone’s 8A, 13B furloughs. If the boilerplate response is that the union gave away your ability to grieve, there’s going to an uprising.

Really, how necessary is Catch & Release SVU these days. It’s been irrelevant since the ‘90’s even more so after Prickwrinkle’s big Juvenile Justice overhaul. It’s a time consuming waste of social justice paper processing fiasco that renders nothing and that should be left for the District level duties, the exception should only be forcible felonies.

See it however you want. Some of us house mice actually used to do “real” detective work. Myself, I’ve been in the d-unit too long now and the past few years I’ve been a house mouse. Excuse me if I took a house mouse job after 20 years of legitimacy. And yeah, I work special bc it’s mine to work in my last few years. I waited my turn for it. It’s nice to plan my overtime instead of getting blindsided by overtime for 20 years and not having a life outside of work. It’s nice to take your life back because when you see inept people getting merit promotions over & over or those who are always blessed with choices rather than leftovers, you have to finally take care of yourself for a change. But you know what, I’m also not someone that feels entitled or protected. What I have now can go away in a bat of an eye. I’ll roll with the changes instead of pissing and moaning about what everyone else is doing. But seriously, it’s assholes like you that think you know everybody else’s job and that you are probably the hardest worker in d-unit. Yeah, I know guys/gals like you...running errands on company time, getting a workout in, taking nice 2hour lunches, blowing off what you could do during your regular tour until it’s overtime-able...not gassing up the car, taking the keys to the squad not assigned to you...etc etc..AND GOOD FOR YOU! Stop eating your own asshat, 17 misc is a pretty small number spread across 3 watches. You’ll be happier when you worry less about what others are doing. And someday, Mark my words, I’m banking you’ll be one of the miscellanies more likely than not.

A super bid is when they close a unit. Here they are opening up new units. Does anyone remember how the 25th district was filled when they opened ? I vaguely remember old timers saying they opened up bids to anyone who wanted to bid in. The rest were sent by commanders looking to get rid of their problem officers.

1/19/2020 03:15:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The FOP has gotten a lot of mileage out of the pre union horror stories. I remember as a new guy almost 35 years ago the old timers acknowledged the FOP wasn't that great, but you should have seen how bad the city screwed them before. There was an attempt to decertify them and replace them with a real union. The alarmists went into overdrive with crazy scenarios and conspiracy theories. Petitions were torn up and ultimately the movement failed. The know it all chumps assured everyone that if we just voted in new guys, reformers everything would be great. A couple years later the reformers were every bit as rotten as the old regime. If a real outsiderwith good intentions should ever get involved with that shit pile of a fraternalorganization look at the Shieldsmess to see what happens. He was inexperienced for sure, but the backstabbing bastards there did everything to screw up his ideas, which were really beneficial to the average PO but apparently not to the FOP suckholes. I'm out, retired. Never considered staying with FOP after leaving. The new guys on the job really need to understand that you need a real union with real lawyers and representatives. No matter who you vote in or how many meetings you go to its a rigged game and you're not winning.

True, and it’s ridiculous. I see it everyday. There are the ones that keep busy and then there are the ones who sit around chit-chatting and socializing. They report for work, sit around for about an hour and then leave the building. They come back when it’s time to clock out. Their inboxes are 4 to 5 pages long. I guess they think the cases are going to disappear.

So according to this 924 detectives will be assigned to the area? Where are the other 311 detectives??? Between the CACC, bomb and arson, auto theft unit and task force teams there are another 163. So about 160 detectives not figured in this number makes me think these numbers might be wrong..

After reading countless reports from p.o.’s I can say that this statement applies more to patrol than Detectives. Especially nowadays.

What exactly do you want in a report? I am open to suggestions on how to improve. But, let me say, sometimes supervisors want reports written a certain way. It seems that in the past, detectives and officers talked more. Some detectives were helpful, and I learned from that. Also, many times we do not find people who will talk to us, give us valid phone numbers, etc. But I always try my best.

1/19/2020 11:33:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's see...patrol and "tactical teams" bring in "possible offenders" based upon anonymous or "CI" information. Nothing at all concrete, no physical witnesses, no physical evidence.
Detectives then have 24 hours (for a juvi) or 48 hours (for an adult) to polish that turd in order to deliver that individual in front of a duty judge.
After reviewing ALL body cams, in car cams, private video (if available), PODs (if available), detectives are then needed to interview any possible witness that patrol and "tactical units" have the ability to hold onto, which today does not exist because there are no patrol officers who have the gift of gab and street sense to persuade an individual to stick around.
So after detectives interview the "witnesses", are forced to release them when they begin to kick and shout that they are being held against their will and "promise" to answer our call when we need them to talk to the ASA and behold, the phones are disconnected.
The "community" does not want, or appreciate, the help of the government.
The "community" believes and trusts more in immediate justice.
The "community", would rather handle things on its own.

Aea North has 290 now and it's going down to 130 or so. How can you NOT screw dets out of assignments if 160 don't bid out? There's no other way to do it. In 2012 none of the remaining 3 areas lost manpower, so it wasn't an issue. Whether it's a super bid or you take guys out by reverse senority, you are going to chase some guys out of their assignments. The only way not to is to lose guys by attrition and not replace them, and that could take years.

So your saying they held superbids when they closed 13 and 19? Kind of doubt that.

He looked up their stars because he is tired of the dismal results of the D unit. What is the matter did he get a little close to home about your work ethics. LOL those that protest too much have a lot to hide. Lack of leadership and Accountability is exactly what is wrong this the D unit. Way too many years of it is OK for not solving crimes. Has become an excuse unit instead of a get the job done unit.

That jackass McCarthy destroyed the Detective Division. Experience and dedication are a thing of the past. Camaraderie does not exist. Don’t expect too much with another reorganization by a merit hack administration. The workers have no fucks left to give.

Agreed the camaraderie died when he sent us to the districts. Supposed to work more with patrol but lost touch with the other detectives. I broke off contact with patrol almost immediately when they jumped all over your cases, hid surveillance evidence, etc. I didn't ask much, just handle the evidence properly and you can have at it. I'll bend over backwards to help you. I always appreciated a working copper even if they fucked up and did stupid shit. We all did it when we were in patrol. But the problem was you couldn't talk to them. They knew everything and you could not tell them what was needed to make it work. Put me back in the Area.

Please stop, the A/S and A/N have the smallest case loads and you still find time to whine. No one deserves a party until the Homicide and Agg. Batt: Handgun clearance rate is up.

Really SLICK? is 011 in Area South, Didn't think so!

I have 5 years left on this job the last thing I want to do now is go work violent. At least robberies usually have legitimate victims. That's another question, is Robbery going to violent or staying in property? I think I heard it is going to violent, where it realy does belong. SO if all the old times bid to Area 5 they are all going to want to work property and violent will be "filled" by reverse senority I would guess. The old Area 5 had a great clearance rate, though I have heard it said that Dean "the Dream" Andrews used to fudge the numbers. Even still why fuck with a good thing? Fucking McCarthy. Fuck NYC.

A/S is where it’s at. The supervisors are catering a party for the Dets tomorrow to show their appreciation for all the Dets do. You don’t see Ozzie or Cesario doing that in Central or North.

On that note... are you a drama free, low maintenance detective that wants 10hr days and 4day weekends and Sgts that make sure you never miss a family function and understand sleep is important when you work around the clock- if this is you come to A/S we’re always looking for great people.

Please stop, the A/S and A/N have the smallest case loads and you still find time to whine. No one deserves a party until the Homicide and Agg. Batt: Handgun clearance rate is up.

You’re a moron!
The party is for SVU, RBT, and HGS asshole not just the “real homicide detectives”. I’ve worked in 5 different units and nobody has ever done this in the other places. Frankly, I appreciate somebody saying thanks. I never saw more miserable people than coppers who always have to find negative in something good. Is A/S perfect? Not by a long shot, but we get along and I wouldn’t move to another area.

Well said. I never harped on someones good gig. I just learned from it and made it my own

Let’s be honest a lot of detectives just don’t know what the hell they are doing.

1/19/2020 04:47:00 AM

After reading countless reports from p.o.’s I can say that this statement applies more to patrol than Detectives. Especially nowadays.

What exactly do you want in a report? I am open to suggestions on how to improve. But, let me say, sometimes supervisors want reports written a certain way. It seems that in the past, detectives and officers talked more. Some detectives were helpful, and I learned from that. Also, many times we do not find people who will talk to us, give us valid phone numbers, etc. But I always try my best.

Here’s a suggestion ..How about a complete, thorough and accurate preliminary investigation. A correct address for the victim (one that geo code). A contact number for the victim. A more detailed description of the offender. Canvass information. Witness information. Hospital information and whether or not the ET’s were requested.

How would you know what their inbox was unless you looked up his or her star.

Get a life.

You're a loser. Always was, always will be.

I know what their inbox looks like because it’s my job to print out a list of delinquent reports. I bet you’re one of them.

17- Misc , are those the house mice, who answer phones, do timekeeping, Case Management and other non-essential duties while making 100,000-110,000 a year. It amazes me how house mice don’t want to work the street, but they’ll work special employment.

Uhhh, I have 20 plus years and I still work the street. There are plenty who can say the same. (roll eyes)

Oh SVU is still there. Just because you put them under HGS doesn't mean the work disappears. Then there are the prima donna Detectives who don't do "Youth" jobs. A couple of years ago one of the prima donnas was complaining that he was overwhelmed and why couldn't the "Youth Dicks" help on shootings. I went up to him and said no problem. I'll be happy to take your Agg Battery Shooting with one in custody but you have to take my child abuse hotline!. He backpedaled at the speed of light. Lots of big heads in the d-unit but most of us really just want to

Everyone wants to get their hands on SVU because SVU detectives are polished. Just sit back and observe them. That goes for each area.

Could have sworn SVU didnt exist anymore because the dont have a LIE-TENANT.
They were supposed to be all violent.
Cute how HQ forget shit to protect clouted on 8 man homicide teams with 10% clearance by arrest numbers. (I dont mean cleared cases thats all bullshit and criminal)

Be careful what you ask for, because if you hand a V/C detective a Child Abuse Hotline or a juvy processing job; they’ll act like you handed them a leaky bag of shit.

To the stunod who thinks that timekeeping and Case Management are "House mouse" and non essential duties, here's a quick lesson.

1. Timekeeping is how the fuck you get paid

2. Case management reads EVERY case that comes into CHRIS and assigns them to the detectives.NOBODY gets their jobs until CMO assigns them

3. Find someone that can read and have them look up the definition of STUNOD for you, so you can know what you are.

Stop while you are ahead. Those position don’t require the skills of a detective and on paper they weren’t designed for detectives. I was agreeing with you at first but you sound pathetic.
