Where the Stats Come From
Our friend who runs HeyJackass.com chimed in the comments yesterday to clarify where his site gets the stats that we trust:

492 is the murder number limited to CPD's jurisdiction. 513 is the homicide number only limited to the city's boundaries which will match the CCME's count and will rise over the coming days, weeks, months, etc...
In any event, the stenographers have been told their number and that's what they'll go with.

The Cook County Medical Examiner is the final authority on homicides, and W.H. Thompson differentiates between homicides investigated by the CPD and those appearing in the corporate boundaries of Chicago, but not investigated by CPD, such as expressway murders, the UIC parking lot murder, police shootings that are 100% justified, but are technically homicides nevertheless. We don't know if justified CCL shootings also fall into this discrepancy, but we all know the Department further clouds the issue by extending "death investigations" long past the findings of the ME.

Hillside McDonalds has a sign posted in bathroom saying to call police because of person doing drugs in bathroom. I talked to manager about it. These are not counted as murders, because they are not. What is reprehensible is that the poor girl at UIC is not counted as a murder by the lying Lightfoot.

To answer your query, justifiable homicides (and nonfatal shootings), either by the police or the average citizen, do count towards the totals.
BTW, we missed a late expiry from the summer, which now puts the year end total at 514. We expect that number to eventually rise to around 520.
