- The mother of an 18-year-old woman fatally shot Tuesday in an Avalon Park convenience store has been charged with kicking a police officer at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Officers were attempting to clear the emergency room about 10 p.m. when Nyisha Beemon, 35, allegedly pushed an officer from behind, grabbed his vest and kicked him, Chicago police said in a statement.
Beemon was reportedly not allowed to view the body of her daughter, Jaya Beemon, who was fatally shot that night in Avalon Park, according to news reports. She was one of five people shot when three gunmen opened fire on someone inside.
And predictably, the ACLU backs the criminal:
- In a statement, the ACLU of Illinois condemned the officer’s use of force.
“It is puzzling and disconcerting that a police officer — a trained professional who should be able to de-escalate a tense situation — chose the worst moment of Jaya’s mother’s life to arrest her,” ACLU of Illinois’s staff attorney Elizabeth Jordan said in a statement.
“No grieving mother should face arrest in the hospital where her child’s body has been taken,” she said.
How about, "No grieving "mother" should be attacking the police who are clearing the scene of a riot IN A FUCKING HOSPITAL!" Not for the ACLU - an actual assailant who attempted to manhandle a police officer is expected to take it? Fuck you ALCU.

We drove by the other day on the way to court and they've actually put an eight foot security fence around the ambulance bays so when CFD brings in a shot gangbanger, they can put the entire ER parking area on lock down to keep potential rioters away lest they interrupt doctors, nurses and staff from saving lives. What does that say about the "community"?

CPD should release the body cam footage from the victim officers and the other officers at the hospital. When the department doesn’t nip this shit in the bud, it begins to fester and lies become the accepted narrative. Can’t really blame the media either. They print and report what people tell them. If the department has no comment, that means only one side of the story gets told.

A long time ago it seemed we had very good relations with the ER personnel. About ten years ago when I left I started noticing a change in some of the hospitals. I can imagine what it’s like now. Let the hospital security and their social workers handle these uprisings. You are never going to win in these perilous times in the court of public opinion and in the criminal courts. Don’t get involved with anything unless another first responder needs help.

I work in 010, that set up in the ER has been like that for a while. They even have metal detectors. There’s been crazy fights and even people shot right outside the ER.

Worked at A/4 VC for many years and lived at Mt. Sinai and CCH. Often, at both hospitals, it was like feeding time at the zoo.
Gonna be in the 50's this weekend, and with it being a leap year, give them what they want.
It was common at Northwestern Hospital for gang members to work their way up to the surgical floors to see how their shot hommies are doing. Security is pretty poor and it is an open hospital for all purposes.
Can you imagine what these areas would be like during a food shortage, or disruption in public services like electricity for a prolonged period of time?
Honestly. I don’t agree with her actions but for gods sake guys... pick your battles. We are not punching bags, but also realize this whole thing in the bigger picture. Feel free to park the ego sometimes and let certain things go. Was the copper hurt? Uniform or vest damaged or just feelings? I had a 15 yr old expire at mt sinai from several gsw. i was sent there by myself to see if the kid would pull through(great officer safety) well the kid didn’t make it. his entire family is in a gang and now at the hospital. i informed them of the bad news and they demanded to see the body. i explained to them that the body was already in the hospital morgue waiting to be picked up by the ME office. the family didn’t care and wanted to see the body, i knew we were going to have a big issue here if they didn’t see the body, (here’s your deescalation) i told them that i would talk with the hospital staff and see if the mother would be allowed to view the body. i was told under no circumstances would that be allowed. i then explained to the family that hospital policy prohibits viewing the body once inside their morgue. i explained that ME office has a process that the family can view the body once the body arrives there. so much for deescalation, the entire started tearing up the e.r waiting room, we all know what happened after that.
Then Elizabeth should have her cell number out there for the oppressed masses to call her anytime they feel aggrieved.

The hospital guards can sometimes predict but really don’t have the resources or authority to control these mobs that the hospital executives refuse to acknowledge. Like CPS, they rely on CPD to control vicious mobs.

The injured PO should consider and file a counter judgement against both the assailant and the hospital.

A long time ago when we had good relationships with hospital ERs and their staff, the smart course of action was "Its hospital property, its hospital problem."
If it was a loud mouthed drunk, a wandering pissbum or a psycho patient, let their security team or mental health experts handle it. Unless it was a life or death situation, don't get involved.
If I was in hospital and security was having a problem, unless they requested police help, I stayed out of it. Some made security call 911 to put it on the record.
Same for disturbances in court branches.

According to the newspaper article the hospital staff called for the CPD and the security guard was involved. I agree with the post but what can you do when you are assigned the job. Let security and hospital staff deal with it

OT: I’ve heard several young officers when at the end of their tour are told by their sergeants to complete their e-learning (bc Compstat was coming up), remark to their Sgt. that they would complete it at home. I also heard other young officers say, “yeah, that’s how I do all my e-learning, at home.” Are you nuts? Why on earth would you give this department any of your free time? If this department didn’t build time into your workday to meet with all the consent decree bullshit, do you think you are getting bonus points for using your time to make a department who could give a shit less about you to make themselves look good? I’ve been on furlough and it was suggested to complete e-learning at home. I was caught up before I left, so I’ll be damned if I’m going to not get paid for it, so the department can be in compliance with a one-sided consent decree. I’ve only got 2 years left, so the direction of having officers do work in off-time won’t affect me much, but I wish these kids could see how they are setting a bad precedent for themselves. Don’t rush out of the station. Do you’re e-learning before you leave. If a supervisor insists that you do it before you go home & you’d be going into overtime, don’t do it unless OT was approved. Don’t do it on your lunch time or breaks either. You are chipping away at your rights in this job.

I use to give to the ACLU as I love all of the Bill of Rights (not just the 2nd), but their personnel have gotten to be just too stupid to support. Case in point here. Why would an employee of the ACLU even comment on this? They surely don't understand the circumstances outside of the hearsay. Perhaps the officer did attempt to de-escalate. The ACLU doesn't know. Keep a lid on it unless there is a case - unless self promotion is your game.
And for those of you playing along at home, expect to lose some of your "Civil Liberties" when you assault anyone - cop or civilian. Part of being "Civil" is acting within the norms and laws we've set up to create this "Civil Society".
I can understand a mother's emotions after losing a child, but only to a point. Because I cannot understand spraying a store or a barber shop with bullets or anything else that passes for normal in Chicago. And if we consider that normal, I guess assaulting a cop who had nothing to do with your dead kid is normal too.
Also, don't forget that hospitals are getting upset with uniformed officers carrying their service weapons in the building. Understand this when responding to these disturbances. Wait outside until the hospital's legal council comes on-site to give you permission to go inside and be the police.
Part of the grieving process is to see which family member of the deceased can act like the biggest asshole.

U of C hospital has video cameras everywhere. If mom says she was treated badly, then she should obtain the videos and release them to the media so everyone can see the injustice she suffered. CPD should release the body cam footage from the victim officers and the other officers at the hospital. When the department doesn’t nip this shit in the bud, it begins to fester and lies become the accepted narrative. Can’t really blame the media either. They print and report what people tell them. If the department has no comment, that means only one side of the story gets told.
This is true in almost all our cases. Speaking from experience. They should do like L.A. (not joking) and breakdown the video/bodycam footage and explain why the officer's actions are correct. The public or the media is NOT/does not care to look at policy so it should be presented by the brass to defend officers in situations where they do wjat we're trained and lawfully certified to do.

Worked hospital security in an Indiana suburb that's not nearly Chicago, and had enough dealings with the falling out, wailing and gnashing of teeth, howling, and everybody being cousins who want to see the deceased to last forever. ACLU needs to step up and handle this stuff their way, that wouldn't last long. If you haven't been there you have no idea how bad it gets and how quick it can turn south on you. Officers did their job and de-escalated, nobody else tried to get foolish, did they?
ACLU is ANTI-POLICE. The criminals are the victims and the police are the offenders.

I work in 010, that set up in the ER has been like that for a while. They even have metal detectors. There’s been crazy fights and even people shot right outside the ER.

Lived 55 years in Chicago and been retired from the department for three years. Moved down South away from that shit hole city and state and never regretted a second of the move. The first chance you get to leave jump on it. I had an old timer tell me once, "Son I never heard a police office say he should of stayed a few more years". They all say, I should of left earlier. All media reporting of this incident has been completely one-sided. It’s ‘the poor grieving mother treated with Disrespect at the hospital/treating like a Dog. No comment was split iced by a hospital spokesman. I’m sure that individual can supply the public with their security footage to really show the public how this woman and her group acted.
One of my all time favorites, at Saint Barnyard, prisoner went into Xray and of course had to be uncuffed. Fucker jumped out the second floor window, landed like a cat and fled, then the xray technician took her sweet ass time to let the officer in the hallway know that dude was gone.PO took a few days for that one.
She looked Calm as the cameras rolled on the 6 o'clock news, ....maybe the " Shock" had not arrived....( or the Witnesses to her turmoil......)

As an FYI University of Chicago was given the 10 million dollars for public safety under the pretense that CPD was getting most of it but didn't. They gave 1 million for technology and the rest they are "burning" like paper...staff taking trips to Baltimore to "help" with crime analysis etc. and a whole lot more. Can someone request an audit of the funds, would be quite interesting as a lot is also going to Malinowski & co.

OT: Columbus Day is a federal holiday, not a state holiday and is not
a city holiday.
A local school board should NOT have the right to remove a federal holiday. Federal laws trump (not Donald Trump) city, county and state laws. I hope a lawyer finds a legal way to stop this.

When my Dad was killed in his house, my brother found him and called. The CPD arrived, there was a reporter right behind them. My brother let the CPD in, the reporter tried to push his way into the house through the front door. My brother beat the guy senseless on the front lawn and the CPD was kind enough to let my brother "get it all out" on the reporter before stopping him. I always felt that was a very kind act by the Coppers and my brother felt better, that is for sure. I miss the days before cell phone cameras.

Honestly. I don’t agree with her actions but for gods sake guys... pick your battles. We are not punching bags, but also realize this whole thing in the bigger picture. Feel free to park the ego sometimes and let certain things go. Was the copper hurt? Uniform or vest damaged or just feelings? Sometimes, especially when it’s a homicide victims mother you gotta make some hard choices. I think her actions were typical of some of the behavior of the ghetto folks but sometimes be an adult and not a robot. If a guy got hurt that’s one thing, if feelings got hurt because of a kick from a girl then give me a break... get over it. Without a doubt these charges are resoundingly DROPPED and she filed a lawsuit. Not a question of it but when. She will have all the sympathy in the world and weather she kicked a copper or not she will 100 percent get paid. Look out for yourselves by sometimes keeping a cool head and not having to act like a hardo all the time.

Next time think about what are to write about and ask yourself the questions: "Was I there?"
