Close Vote

  • Aldermen approved Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s coronavirus spending ordinance Friday over the objections of critics who say she’s giving herself too much authority to make big purchases using public money without City Council oversight.

The mayor’s emergency powers ordinance passed the council by a 29-21 vote following contentious debate. Lightfoot had the council meet Friday afternoon to consider the package after opponents used a parliamentary procedure to block it at Wednesday’s meeting.

The vote was unusually tight for a signature mayoral initiative. The no votes came from progressive and conservative aldermen from all over the city, with members of the Black and Latino caucuses joining white aldermen in coming out against the plan.

On Wednesday, the mayor had excoriated the five aldermen who stopped the vote as a small group of selfish obstructionists more interested in “preening in front of the press” than working to help their constituents who are in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But on Friday, Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, 35th, said Lightfoot’s failure to include provisions in the ordinance guaranteeing equitable distribution of coronavirus funds to protect vulnerable Chicagoans made it unacceptable. “With this mayor, we’ve seen that you have to get it in writing,” Ramirez-Rosa said.
And we all know that members of government willingly return power granted to them all the time. It just happened a few years ago with Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus.

Groot immediately celebrated by riding along with Cato on the west side Friday night, putting her tacit stamp of approval on the redeployment of officers from taxpaying wards to the ones that contribute nothing but death and misery to Chicago.

Just wait until the socialist invasion rolls into Chicago... Look at how socialized medicine wastes money and kills people in the UK

“The number of deaths due to the disruption of cancer services is likely to outweigh the number of deaths from the coronavirus itself over the next five years.”

Socialized healthcare and more government swelling in size and power is inbound.

A close city council vote at that point will be 48-2... Enjoy these "golden days" while they last.

Wasn't it Nero who fiddled while Rome burned? MayorASS Lori "NERO" Lightheaded!!! So to fix the murder, mayhem and chaos in the BAD (PEOPLE & FOLK) AREAS, she is putting other good areas at higher risk and punishing them. Sounds like you're playing Russian Roulette with peoples lives and property MayorASS!!! BTW, MayorASS, make sure you piss as much money away as you possibly can now that the Alderassholes gave you cart blanche! Just WHAT THE FUCK do we need the bunch of alderassholes for, they do nothing and they cost a lot of money and they are constantly getting into trouble! By reducing their numbers the city would save money, the remaining alderassholes would have more work to keep them busy and not get into trouble. That's what I call a WIN - WIN!!!

So in less than a year, if there's still a newspaper or legitimate news outlet in Chicago, there'll be an investigative story on the topic of "Where'd the money go". This arrogant ordinance by-passes the entire sole source process and lets the mayor piss away taxpayer dollars any way she sees fit. And those of us still here will be posting stuff like "whose idea was this". Its an ordinance just waiting to be abused.

Lightbrain realizes that there is no point to having dictatorial power if she doesn’t have money to shower on those who do her bidding willingly. And I can think I can name 21 wards that WON’T be getting any of the largesse.

Slightly off-topic: look to see Lightbrain extend the stay-at-home order, at least a partial one, through the fall and possibly into the winter. The media have been trying to lay the groundwork for a “second wave” of COVID-19 this fall, in order to justify continuing the lock-down through the 2020 presidential election; Lightbrain would probably LOVE to extend her “emergency powers” indefinitely.

Vallas was and still is the best person for the job. He has been the only person to offer a plan on how to save the city during this lock-down. Here are two articles with his financial plan that Mayor Duckfoot scoffed at.

No they won’t. It’s the game all Chicago mayors have played. As long as she has the needed votes to pass, certain aldermen can vote against her to appease their constituents. Been going in forever. Northwest and southwest side aldermen have been able to do that because of their police and fire constituents.

Her comment about them grandstanding, while probably true, is highly amusing since that's exactly what she, Pritzker, and various other politicians have been doing for weeks. I'm not sure that there's even anyone involved in this that isn't mostly trying to score political points. Maybe Fauci, he has kind of an "I'm old and don't give a shit" thing going on.
