Low Class Slum Times
- Over a 10-day period late last month, as the COVID-19 outbreak was taking hold, Chicago Police officers called in sick more than 5,300 times.
Data obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times through a Freedom of Information Act request shows officers assigned to a unit that has little to no face-to-face interaction with the public called off work more than any other group of officers between March 16 and March 25.
Those officers are assigned to the CPD’s Alternate Response Section, which typically works out of a city-owned facility at 2111 W. Lexington St. — sharing a building with the city’s Department of Public Health. Officers assigned to ARS answer phone calls from members of the public who want to report a non-emergency criminal act, such as a vehicle break-in.
The section is staffed by officers “on permanent light-duty awaiting reassignment as well as those officers who have been stripped of their police powers,” said Luis Agostini, a CPD spokesman.
You know who else works there?
- Officers recovering from catastrophic injuries, surgical recoveries, heart issues, cancer patients.
Officers don't just get to sit at home until they're cured or die. Medical time - while somewhat generous - is finite. If you're gone for a year, you can be placed in a no-pay status. But while undergoing treatments, you might be susceptible to medical complications (lowered immunity, medicines that prevent your blood from clotting, chemicals that render your bones brittle, make you nauseous, cause vomiting or other uncomfortable bodily issues.)
In an effort to maintain insurance coverage during what would undoubtedly bankrupt just about any middle-class household, the Alternate Response Section allows Officers to earn a living and maintain some dignity while working toward a pension.
The Scum Times seems to be implying these Officers are calling off work even if they have zero contact with the public at large, when in fact, many are already in fragile health and they might be calling off due to chemotherapy side effects, internal medical complications or similar issues.
UPDATE: Yes, we've heard of the abusers. We also know the City refuses to weed them out for political reasons.

Most officers don't go on the medical even if they're sick. I've burned my own time instead of going on the medical many times just because I don't like having to deal with the medical section. Somehow the cucks at the Sun Times didn't find that out through their 'investigation.'
But never mind the abuse of use of the body guards for Shortshanks and Twinkle Toes that we pay for that they have no right to.

How many in ARS? With 5300 in a ten day period there must be thousands. If not than the times something is not right. 530 a day (that is 5300 divided by 10 days, for all the CBS graduates) seem excessive for any reason. Unless there are a couple thousand in the ARS unit. Who is commander?
Just curious in that same 10 day period how many on regular duty called in sick? Would be a very interesting comparison. What is there 10,000 plus on and given day on duty? How many officers in the unit in question these days, 100,500 or maybe a 1,000? Gonna be pretty hard to defend the 5,300 number if the unit is less than at least 1,000 officers 530 a day is nothing to sneeze about, if you forgive the pun.

Most private sector employees in similar situations would be on disability, fmla leave, or unemployed.

that building is one of the many "sick" buildings that are unfit for the public but occupied 24/7 with police officers. There is no proper air flow. Just one sick person can infect the entire floor. It is not safe for a person with compromised health on a good day. The Sun Times once again showed its total misunderstanding of a situation. The officers are housed in a building with the public health department. Well, duh! That is serious potential Covid19 exposure risk right there.
Best part is the article quotes a department spokesman who says only a handful of officers have tested positive yet the department hasn't told anybody in the unit that anyone tested positive. By protocol the department is supposed to tell officers that have come with an infected person but somebody is rule 14.
Let's not forget all the Moms down there who didn't want to expose their unborn children to an infectious disease. Oh that's right liberals don't care about unborn children!
How about the people who are so stressed out by their own mistakes they have never been there or take months off at a time, or the blessed few who go on the medical and never spend day one there?

Every single SWORN member (call taker) from 376 was uprooted so that 10 (TEN) CIVILIAN call takers can occupy the space.
When sworn members were down at 376 they sat w/in cubicles. Not only were these officers practicing social distancing these 3 foot tall cubicles they sat at shield them from all the nonsense.
Now these Officers sit unprotected in a small open style classroom less than 6 feet from each other answering calls from a 70’s style phone system. Can’t even transfer calls, Lord help the ones who are told they have to hang up and call 911.

My take on this:
Most of us do not use the medical. If we are sick, we still come to work. Especially during flu season roll-calls are full of coughing, sneezing, runny nose messes who still come to work even though they feel like crap. We shouldn't, but we do. I am guilty of this as well.
Anyway, now we are NOT doing that. This is what a normal week/month would look like if we all took advantage of our medical policy and decided in the best interests of everyone else, we should stay home instead of making a district or unit ground zero for the flu, rotrovirus, common cold, etc...

You are sick . You call the unit then you call the medical you
Don’t go out you don’t go on vacation you don’t go to a party
You stay home and if your better before 3 days you go to the
Medical and you come back to work after 3 days you get the ok
From the DOC with a note and come back to work . If you follow
The rules who cares what they have to say about it . If you don’t follow
The rules as some then you get in trouble other than that who cares
The media and Politicians are never gonna like the police not in this
City . Follow the rules and you will survive your career and ride off

Additionally, some may be married to police, fire that do have public contact and may be asymptomatic before passing it on- and well, if you are sitting inside hours a day, mere feet from your co-workers, it’s a hot spot waiting to happen. I’m sure many people called in sick or took a medical day as as a means to sort out exposure issues. This is why I choose to not read that police hating rag mag. Where the Hell do you think their reporters are working from? At a desk with 100 other reporters or home?
