I was a Policeman for over 30 years. During that time I was also a member of the FOP until I was promoted. During my time as a member of the union I saw union Presidents come and go. The only one that was worth a damn was the first one and that was only because he was able to get the Mayor to sign a contract with us. The rest have been in bed with the leadership in this City and have rolled over when push came to shove. Every single one of them. Every single time. So while I'll admit that JC may be brash, rough around the edges and not well polished, he is a fighter and that is something that has been missing in the FOP leadership for a VERY long time. I wish my brothers and sisters in blue all the best as while I wore a white shirt for awhile, my heart is still with the rank and file and I want to see you guys and gals get at the very least, everything you deserve and then some. Reading all these comments reminds me of the morning the last presidential election was announced. A lot of dem, ash and cloth wrenching with the start of TDS síndrome. Throw in cries of lock her up and drain the swamp choruses and you have the start of JCDS. So, buckle up for the start of a very interesting/entertaining time until the next election.
Thanks to this “pandemic” big pay raises aren’t gonna happen. We should be locked into the 10.5% over 5 years the white shirts got. There is no arbitrator that will see our side and give us more once this settles and the city opens the books.
Kevin had the chance to lock that up while times were much better and decided not to. In fact, I as well as many of my co-instructors remember listening to Kevin at Near North after he sat in on our training. He was bragging about how he had raises and medical locked up with Rahm. Just another big fat lie from a big fat liar who needed to sit and rest during every drill/scenario claiming that his foot was sore. Dude was huffing and puffing and sweating bullets just drawing and holstering his weapons.
John is going to be a fresh change to lead us. He has the same in your face style Sharkey has for the CTU. John probably won’t get us big raises but at the same time I know he will fight like hell to keep Lori from getting what she wants which is control of discipline. Do you not realize that his polarizing rhetoric is going to drive a wedge between the Mayor, the City Council and the FOP like we have never before seen. The new FOP leader does not have a “reasonable” side to him, he only knows how to be abrasive and disruptive. His documented history of treatment of people does not bode well for the FOP.
If the Mayor and the alderman choose to do so, they can continue to drag out this contract negotiation / arbitration for as long as they choose to do so. The department itself can simply begin to enforce ALL of the rules and regulations which can cause the membership never before seen disciplinary issues which can drain the union's coffers of much needed funds.
Simply being elected to thIs Office, will not change a self serving person like this into a reasonable leader.
I think we are all fucked either way with the city going broke because of corona virus we will get no raise, we will be lucky to get any new equipment. Between fatass and the mayor trying to keep the state shut down whoever won the FOP prez didn’t matter the new contract is over a year away. Graham should’ve had this contract done last year and from what I hear J Cat is a goof so who knows what’s going to happen.
This can’t be any worse than it’s been with Graham. Graham seems to be a nice guy , but after 3 years without a contract it’s time for a new approach. The new approach is an aggressive , loud mouth who doesn’t give a fuck about who he offends. The membership has spoken due to Graham and his crew dragging their feet with not only the contract negotiations, but with other issues that the city has done in violation of our contract. The man is a pretty damn good softball player. Unfortunately, every team he played for in the Police league couldn't wait to get rid of him after one season.
Every game he would get into a verbal argument with another districts player or the umpire. I mean EVERY game, and he couldnt let it go. He had to get the final word in.
We would be up by 20 and he would argue balls and strikes calls with the ump.
You might think this is trivial or apples and oranges, but its not. This story about his actions is just the tip of the iceberg. We were embarrassed having him on our team and that was just a BS softball league. Wait until you see what he does now.

John Cantazara really appeals to the young gunners on this job, they think he is cool because he speaks up against the bosses. Well boys and girls he is a GOOF, he has no class and is a beefier, check to see how many CR numbers he has gotten against coppers. The city will not deal with him, you will get nothing done for the next term. He can make as many demands as he wants but him and his crew will be censored by the FOP National. Remember any type of job action is illegal.
Judging from the comments so far, not too many happy w/the results. I hope you voted. I did and it wasn’t for the guy who won. Graham was too laid back but I worked in the same district as Cantanzara at one time and never liked what I saw. While I agree we need more of a fighter the guy has no character meaning he doesn’t care about anyone but himself. I listened to some say that Cantanzara is the fighter we need, like they were voting for Trump again. IMO, Trump loves the country, Catanzara only loves himself. I hope I’m wrong.

I watched him at the city council meeting. He was very respectful to Groot, asked her tough questions she didn't answer. Now she can't really avoid him as she did in that meeting when they wouldn't let him speak a second time. And I don't know why, there was no ranting or yelling but she simply didn't want to address his concerns. I'm sure she was hoping that Graham would win. At least give him a chance. While I don’t know this Jcat at all, I know that everyone was sick and tired of our union not speaking up for us. It felt like the city just did absolutely anything they wanted and we just sat back and took it. That’s why we are in this spot now. The membership was ready for anyone new with a loud voice. You can only get beat down so many times before you’ll do anything to make it stop. I think the mentality was let’s give anything a shot besides the status quo.
As a civilian I read these comments and know that CPD is fucked and not because of your new President. It is fucked because you cannot get behind your leadership no matter who they are. Over the years you have tried young and old and none of them got anything done. Every FOP President played by City Halls rules and the politicians just bulldozed over you every time. So this time you have have elected a loudmouth, someone who might be different, and half of you complain that nothing will get done because he is a loudmouth. Look back, nothing has gotten done for decades! It is time for a change in tactics!
Since I really do support and care about the officers on the streets, I want what is best for each and every one of you but nothing will change until you change the way the battle is fought. The Mayor is probably overjoyed. Our leadership will depend on a guy that may very well be fired in the near future. Any public support we might have will be destroyed in the city controlled media. Our credibility is already lacking and the general public isn't really concerned about what they consider to be a racist organization anyways. The membership has chosen a shotgun approach so expect a lot of collateral damage contractually. If you think that we will retain the rights we have as a group, you are sadly mistaken. All you need to do is look around you. You'll see that this department is rotten from the top to bottom. Everyone is looking out for themselves and the FOP is no different. It's quite possible that the membership may not survive this term as most members already feel a severe disconnect from the leadership we've had over the years and it's getting worse. We are our own worst enemy.

I was on the Superintendent's staff during the last layoff talks, around 1980, as I recall. It was a real battle as to the number in each rank that would be idled. The seniority factor came into play and the claim that when an officer is promoted does he or does he not resign the previous rank ? You senority date changes when you get promoted. Exempt ranks actually resign their status. I do not see police layoffs but a hiring and promotion freeze and possibly no raise

The election of Cantanzara was a long time coming. Lets face it, how many past FOP Presidents have been flipped by the occupant of the 5th Floor of City Hall? Go down the list of past presidents and name me one who actually stood up to any of our recent mayors? NONE! One prime example is our pension situation. Name on past president who raised holly hell regarding the funding? In fact didn't one past president actually sat ideally bye as the Daleys raided our fund? Didn't a past president actually say that it was good for the fund because the City skipped practical payment to the fund? What did Graham say or do regarding the pension situation? Kevin Graham lost this election because the majority of the men and woman of this department got sick and tired of the same old bull. Although he beat Dean Angelo for the presidency he allowed Angelo's underlings to influence him in many of his decisions, Donahue, Bella, etc. The majority of the membership got sick and tired of being promised the world and not delivering. I can only say I hope for the best but I fear the worst. I only hope for the best for the men and woman of the department. To say the lest this is going to be interesting is a understatement.

Absolutely embarrassing! How the hell are close to 5K officers going to vote for this clown that’s known for being a loud mouth????
