Massive Tax Hikes Coming

  • Nashville Mayor John Cooper is pushing a 31.7-percent increase in property taxes — the first tax hike since 2012 — as the city scrambles to balance its budget, according to The Tennessean.

The plan increases property taxes by $1 for fiscal 2021, which would move the rate from $3.155 to $4.155.

"This is a crisis budget," Cooper said at a city council meeting Tuesday, the newspaper reported. The mayor announced a $2.44 billion budget proposal, which is about $115 million more than the current fiscal year.

Nashville is one of many cities in the U.S. that are struggling to make up tax revenue lost amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to widespread closures and record-high numbers of unemployment nation-wide. The pandemic comes as the state seeks to recover from a devastating tornado season.
And get how he's threatening taxpayers:
  • “Thousands of residents have lost their jobs during the pandemic, and that makes the necessary decision to raise taxes all the more difficult,” Cooper said. “And as I mentioned during the State of Metro address, the city has thinned its cash reserves to a point where we find ourselves without a rainy-day fund during a stormy season.”

Cooper said the tax hike is an effort to avoid laying off city employees. The city council has a history of voting down tax increases.

“If any council members don’t want to approve this let us know and we will have to begin mass layoffs,” Cooper said.
So even while acknowledging thousands of people have lost their jobs (and won't be able to afford tax hikes), he's going to keep city employees working instead of laying some of them off, like every privately run business is doing. Just like a democrat.

Yup, I have one of those jobs that could get cut and I'm not happy about it, but what can you do? If there's no money to pay me, how can they? I hope it doesn't get to that, but I won't be surprised if it does.

Cooper is just another filthy democrat mayor looking for any excuse to raise taxes. And of all places in red Tennessee. Their RE taxes are so wonderfully low though that they could double them and they still wouldn't come close to ours.Too many left wing cockuckers have moved from their shithole states.

I'm sure property taxes in Tennessee are very tiny compared to Crook County. Been looking for little waterfront property in Wisconsin unbelievable tranquility on a lake house taxes under $1,500 in many cases. Have a slab of cement in nw side paying almost $5,000. Wish I had the time to gtfoh. Can't believe groot and fatso Pigster are the best representation we could vote for.

I will give Mayor Cooper some credit -- he came into office following two administrations that were spend spend spend and hid how bad the city financial situation was from everyone. Even the State Comptroller had to step in and say "either you fix it or I will step in and fix it -- and you don't want that."

As bad as a tax increase is Mayor Cooper recommended cuts to the city budget that DID NOT involve public safety (police, fire, EMS, and jails). Those are not popular decisions in a blue city but he is showing where the waste is at and what is luxury versus necessity for the city budget.

That 31% increase is $1 per $1,000 of taxable value. Its gonna be $4 total. Compare to maybe $50 in Chicago.

We all know what's coming in Chicago soon enough. Not to be a dick but if you don't like it, leave. None of this should be a surprise at all. We live in the 3rd most Libtarded city in America. It's coming and nothing will stop it. Just like the last tax hike, and the one before that ect.

Hey, what a great idea. We could do that in Illinois also, but we will tell them the tax increase is only temporary, just until our coffers begin to fill up again. Remember, we did that with the tollway charges, told them it would only last for a little while. Suckers!

So what happens if we all go to our mortgage lenders and tell them we want to pay our taxes separately from our monthly mortgage. And we keep the amount set aside for our property taxes. As one poster already noted, the teachers got their contract, a give-away for 2 months work, with the rest of the year off. And as for the property taxes, we're paying the mortgage lender their principal and interest and the insurance. So what happens if we just tell tax collectors to go fuck themselves. We have a mayor who advocates certain citizens needn't pay for parking tickets, water bills and convinced ComEd to suspend shut-offs.

This is the reality we have thousands of teachers getting full pay for benefits, the worst part is they are required to make six telephone calls a day to the parents to try to talk to them if they answer that’s fine if not all they do is check off they called a parent sitting home for pay and benefits again that’s not counting all the city clerks employees where is they could be bringing in millions of dollars with the city sticker revenue which you cannot purchase and less you wanna pay uploaded price of the currency exchange. Then we have the city treasurer all the mayors employees the state employees at cook county employees for sitting on your ass is. I have a neighbor I just talk to that works for the city treasurers office she told me that the people in the office her supervisor told her that she may be working from home when they go back like many others why are they needed?

If the mayor governor crook county clerk did her job Crooker County president that we would not have this problem with the property taxes so much waste! You have coppers fireman paramedics so many others garbagemen out there every day busting her ass is working for that check without a contract she graciously gave the teachers 18% raise after they were right on strike for what two months do you think the Chicago public school kids are too smart coming out now all the children public Catholic private whatever you wanna call it will be coming out as Berry Obama used to say they were all be acting stupidly only because they don’t have the education parents can’t teach, the children need to be in school. Start the layoffs mayor city of New York laid off 50% RV city employees state employees but you won’t do it due to political considerations that’s the truth correct!

ANY INTELLIGENT PERSON WOULD KAYOFF PEOPLE, CUTBACK PAYROLL, TRIM SPENDING AND RESTORE POSITIVE CASH FLOW!
I challenge anyone reading this to show me where government in the USA has ever done this in the last 30 years!!!!!

Why are workers, for example, at the DMV being paid ? The building is closed, no road tests given.

Why are librarians being paid ? Park district employees ? School P.E. teachers, etc..?

Because they are in unions and as long as they are paid, the union dues keep flowing into AFSCME, Teamsters, SEIU, CTU, etc.

75% of teachers should be laid off
one teacher could easily teach 3 or 4 classrooms with elearning
why not , it works
cps missed at least 4 months of classroom learning and they all passed
lets solve pension problem and high real estate taxes by laying off teachers , assistant principals , administrative employees .

So many taxpayers are now unemployed but the government workers who get paid off of the remaining taxpaying public are not going to see cuts? And not only that the little remaining taxpaying public are now facing more taxes? Sounds like a fine plan. Food prices going up in my area as well. Why work in the private sector anymore? Better to get on that unemployment list or work for the government and get a "guaranteed" pension and pay raises and no layoffs.

Property taxes are the only true "take-it-to-the-bank" tax scheme. Many of the other taxes can be minimized to some extent or the other. People with assets, like real estate, have no choice but to pay or lose their property worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in some cases. This works until there is a mass-exit and the real estate markets collapse. We are headed in that direction in this septic-tank state.

5/07/2020 12:46:00 PM

Then we have some city workers pitching in saying you’re volunteering but yet they’re still getting full pay and benefits so it would be volunteering the mayor needs to find the rest of them things to do maybe they could work in the police district what about all the teachers are the CPS administration all of that money just being thrown away what about that white about that? Went to the city clerks office on archer Avenue there is still closed I want to purchase a new city sticker but yet the currency exchanges are wide open to make purchases why can’t they put a piece of plexiglass up and put those employees in there so they can at least bring revenue win for the city? Where is the city treasurer the city clerk and all the rest of the deputy mayor‘s are there others that are making a six-figure salary is hiding it I didn’t even hear or maybe there with that JB‘s wife in Florida had his multi million dollar compound:

Hundreds of city workers take on new jobs to meet pandemic needs
https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2020/5/7/21249727/chicago-redeploys-city-workers-meet-pandemic-needs-coronavirus-covid-19

And then the teachers got an 18% raise Poliça without a contract just like fire for how many years almost 4 years the mayor couldn’t give us a great contract like that don’t forget they were on strike for how long again they get how much time off and now they’re off again and again and they’re doing parades throughout the neighborhood people Horan showing the children that they really care as the parents that are standing out there like idiots are losing their jobs and will lose their homes soon when the taxes skyrocket and the mortgage is due.

All part of the Democrats master plan. They’re all crying poor for there unpreparedness and panic spending.
Nashville is a dying shithole with 1 strip of commerce and will see over half of those quaint businesses fold.
Unemployed will be showered with offers of guaranteed income and free rent, free school.
Foreclosures are one way for the govmint to take over your property and give it to the deadbeats. Flippers and speculators will flock in and buy low without Fed grants this time. Low income reinvestment gets first dibs on local funds already in escrow.

Governors gave free hotel rooms to the homeless covids in Calif and now hotels want these freeloaders out before they reopen.
Same has to,be happening in tourist Nashville as well,as every Dem run city loaded with pissbums.

Larri’s LightLoafers says she’d lay-off before raging a tax. That’s Bullshit double talk - guaranteed. If Larri doesn’t Prickwrinkle will. CPS gets their tax levy regardless and on time...for staying at home e-Lurn’n students that don’t log onto.
Larri LightLoafer doesn’t have to cut hours for city employees since there’s a budget thats already appropriated for salary.
City certainly doesn’t know how to manage an automated payroll system anyway, and doesn’t need layoffs until the money is re-directed and gone, spent elsewhere for Sanctuary efforts and masks, PPE we never seen.

Wrong about Nashville. Fastest growing city in the US. Lots of business relocating there huge building boom. Why because TN tax rates for businesses. Even with a 30 tax increase the taxes would be about 1/2 the total amount of a comparable home in Chicago. Decent public schools and a very good climate and a much cleaner city. In fact many fleeing Chicago and Illinois are becoming Nashville residents. Sorry to bust your bubble but you have no idea what your talking about when comparing Nashville to Chicago. One added feature is the vast majority of population speaks English as their first language and no sanctuary city status. What's not to like?

To 2:46 guess you have not been to Nashville lately. Boom City, fastest growing get city in US. Lots of new Tech business opening there as well as some major companies relocating to area. Housing and real estate boom. Low State taxes and even with the big increase comparable size home taxes would be a small fraction if what you and your pay for the privilege of living in. The most corrupt poorly run city in the entire country. In fact Chicago could give mist third world cities a run for the worst run title. You politicizing populate the state jails and your schools fail to educate on top of the over 500 murders a year. And you have the Gaul to call Nashville a dying shithole. Newark maybe but Nashville not hardly. You my friend have inhaled too many CTA bus fumes.

Teachers should be forced to lay off 75% of teachers . They proved Elearning works , cps students should be given option , learn at home on computer or one teacher for several classrooms teaching on line .
Less fights , supply families with cereal ,PBJ , rice ,beans , instant potaoes ,
powdered milk . No need for sweetheart contracts supplying breakfast , lunch . No lunchroom workers , have parents walk children to school . Take police out of schools .
