My business partner, Edwin Genao, is a former NC police officer who started a manufacturing company making uniform accessories for other officers. In the wake of COVID-19, we have recently shifted our production to making cloth face masks and we are offering free donations to police officers. I'm trying to get the word out there, as there are many officers with either poor or non-existent face coverings.

Ok let’s set the dam standard straight here cause I’m getting tired of the fear mongering and miss information.... UNLESS is a N95 mask stop wasting you dam time. It’s nothing but show cloth etc is NOT stopping anything air born not even dust... if they worked you guys wouldn’t be short of mask EMS wouldn’t be short of mask and everyone could just take a pair of socks and tape it to their face. Hell even a surgeons mask is nothing more then a cup to catch his or hers sweat, snip and what ever else can fall from his head into a sterile in environment......
Common sense tells you if it was that easy no one would be buying shit from China..

Cloth masks are somewhat useful at limiting the spread of the disease but respirators (n95 or, better yet, n100s) are needed to actually prevent transmission to the wearer.
In other words, the way cops are, everyone will take off cloth masks when not interacting with the public and end up spreading it among each other anyway.

And Riccio just put out a mandate that effective today all coppers will wear “surgical masks” and nitril gloves when on the street (but not in the car or station). First of all who woke Riccio up?? Where has he been hiding? And to wear “surgical masks” what good does that do. If it’s not N95 they are wasting their time. Are they scrubbing in for surgery? Give me a break Riccio and retire already.
I’ve been working without one. Tested negative twice took and found no antibodies so I never had it. Oh and I have a auto immune disorder. Open businesses already and let people get on with their life. People die from flu and not a peep.
Starting to wear masks now on a regular basis, 45 days after this shit started, is the most asinine thing that I've ever heard.

YOU'RE wasting our time by blowing garbage. If stopping a single virus particle was the issue, it theoretically would be stopped by an N95 mast, assuming no leakage around the edges.
But much of the time the virus particles are swimming in large (comparatively) drops of saliva or mucus, which WILL be stopped by a cloth mask. Whether they originate from the wearer or the person standing in front of him.
Point being, a homemade mask or one from Etsy isn't N95 rated. But it's way better than nothing at all. Which seems to be what you're proposing. Get a clue.
Cloth masks can catch larger airborne droplets, reducing the amount of the virus that gets into your system (and in effect causing infection to be less severe). Of course even N95 mask doesn't give full protection - but even bad mask is better than nothing, assuming proper care.

I wanted to address one of the Anonymous comments above about the protection offered by various masks. Indeed for the person wearing the mask, an N95 respirator or similar model (i.e. KN95, etc.) offer significantly more protection in terms of filtering viruses from the air. The "95" in the name of these masks stands for 95%, which refers to the percentage of .3 micron particles they can filter successfully. The SARS-COV-2 virus is estimated at .17 microns which means even an N95 is not perfect here - or even close to perfect. But its the best we have short of heavy duty equipment.
Shirt Stay Plus is manufacturing cloth face masks made from 3-layers of cotton. These offer some minimal protection for the wearer. We have not done our own studies on our masks specifically, but the cotton we use has rated between N70 and N78. However other factors such as mask fit will also impact the effectiveness. So why both wearing these or any cloth mask at all? Well two reasons: first, yes it will help filter out some. Particularly virus particles attached to droplets as even though the virus is very small and could pass through, the droplet itself is often much larger. But secondly, and perhaps more significantly, it protects others from your exhalations. If you sneeze or cough, the spread of droplets and particles from that sneeze or cough will be limited by the mask.
Now lastly I would like to clarify that we are SELLING the cloth masks to the general public. Then we are using that money to provide both cloth AND KN95 masks to police officers and first responders. Yes we do actually have some KN95's, although a limited supply. And no they are not for sale. We are only giving them out to first responders in order to give them more protection. Unfortunately we are not able to give everyone who requests a KN95 as we have a limited supply, but we are donating as many as we can, and then in some cases we are donating cloth masks too.
We're using our discretion on these in order to try our best to put each mask to use, and get the higher-grade masks (the KN95's which we've purchased) to those who need them the most, and then for everyone else get them the cloth masks under the idea that something there is better than nothing. Our cloth masks are 3-layers of tight-weave cotton so better than just a t-shirt of something. But certainly our preference would be to have an unlimited supply of the higher-grade respirators for everyone. That said, we're not letting the impossible concept of a perfect solution stop us from hopefully contributing a lot of very good solutions.
We figure with so many officers putting their lives on the line every day, the least we can do is bust our backsides to get as many masks (both KN95 and 3-layer cotton) out there as we can. We hope it helps, at least in some small way.
Although I'm sure many officers appreciate the gesture and generosity of many of those who have donated masks, we really need N95 or better in order to be protected. I see a lot of folks (people) wearing these home made cloth ones, which is fine but we as first responders)front line workers definitely need something like N95's.

There are already two retired CPD already passing out face shields that one of them, Mark Matozzi, designed. 2600 face shields made and passed out so far with the help of FOP Reps and dedicated supervisors in 007, 009, 018, 017, 025, 189 D Unit and several suburbs. These face shields fold up and are carried in vest pocket. Resuable, impervious to bleach so can be sanitized easily. Reach out to Mark Matozzi or FOP 3rd VP Fernando Flores. They will get you enough for your entire District.

I'm not saying what they're giving out is trash, just that YOU need to be responsible for YOUR safety and the more you know, the better. Some of the cloth masks are akin to nothing.

You are so right. 2009, swine flu(H1N1) April-July, In the US alone, 100 million infected, 936,000 went to hospitals, 75,000 died. NO Shutdowns, NO stay at home orders.. but back then, Trump wasn't the president and running for re-election.

Remember the Chicago 1995 heat wave ? No PPE , no medical, no body bags, no body storage, no supervision trial and error on the street. We had to steal from the hospital equipment to protect ourself.
