- The city council in Berkeley, California, approved a measure Wednesday to eliminate police from conducting traffic stops and instead send unarmed civilian city workers in their place.
Though several municipalities across the country have proposed and enacted measures to redirect police department funding, the traffic stop measure moving forward in Berkeley is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, Fox News reported.
What are the details?
According to Berkeleyside.com, the traffic stop proposal, introduced by council member Rigel Robinson, aims to "ensure a racial justice lens in traffic enforcement" and find ways to reduce or eliminate "pretextual stops based on minor traffic violations."
If the council wants to eliminate "pretextual" stops, why not just repeal the laws about cracked windshields, no license plates, missing mirrors and no seat-belt usage?
And maybe do what has been proposed here a dozen times - provide police with lists of which offenses are not enforceable for specified races? Crimesha has done that here, telling police that nothing will be enforced unless it (A) meets thresholds that have not been passed by any legislative body and (B) on body camera.
Otherwise, it's a free pass for everyone!

I am thinking five days and fifteen days respectively.
The police are well on their way to extinction. Just think about all the jobs they used to do which are now done by civilians. It then takes a few civilians to do the job of one police officer and they are political patronage jobs, although they will tell you there is no political patronage. This has been going on for years while everybody was asleep. This new radical left needs to eliminate police so they can implement their own form of control over the masses. It has happened in other countries and it will happen here the way we are going.
I think this is a great idea! Find a shade tree observe something. After a few of their non commissioned public service aids get their asses kicked And maybe even shot, and car stolen, they might get the message.
This oughtta get real exciting. Those liberals deserve everything that comes out of this.
So how many of you would stop for a civilian that is trying to pull you over? Will their cars be marked? Will they wear uniforms? How is a driver supposed to know that they are traffic control and not someone trying to car jack them? Do you think the people that are hired as "traffic control" people will not take bribes? Will they be wearing cameras?
Chicago counts on revenue from traffic violations and actually set the budget with the forecast of traffic tickets issued. I see a lot of revenue income not coming in.

You might be able to get away with this in Mayberry. I hate to say it, and yes I am the police, but this is what democratic societies are allowed to do. They can make the rules, as silly as they are. I can't see the traffic stop thing as having been a huge problem in Berkely but whatever.
I have to stop my car for a sworn police officer. It is the law.
There is no legal requirement to do so for a DMV Flunky.
And there is no way I am pulling over for anything but a police vehicle with blue lights.
And if the person in a police car with blue lights pulling me over is not a police officer,
I will assume they are up to bo good and act accordingly.

If I understand state law in California correctly, these non-police city workers cannot legally use emergency lights to pull over motorists. So I see this as either charges for those city workers, or motorists blithely ignoring them like me driving away from a meter maid before she can write me.
I thought that you have to be a certified Law Enforcement Officer to make traffic stops and detain motorist ? Will they just be unarmed Police Officers?

Courts are ghost towns, may as well going to lead to needing a warrant to conduct a traffic stop, or only by executive order to run a DUI or seat belt mission.

The police should not conduct any traffic stops, do not write any citations, do not be a money raiser for the city.

See, this is the problem with all these "woke" assholes. Everything is seen through their bullshit "racial justice lens". I'm retired now, but when I was working and made a traffic stop, I didn't consider the race of the violator. Most times I was unaware of the drivers race before the stop. Anyone who sees everything by race is truly a racist. Fuck these people. And while I don't wish it on anyone, it won't be long before one of these civilians making traffic stops gets shot and killed. Traffic stops and domestic violence calls are the top two most dangerous police activities.
In Germany on US bases, they had citizens (male and female Karens)that could give you a parking ticket. We just turned on the wipers until it flew off. It was even better if they were still present.

Legislators are NOT all powerful units that can pass whatever statutes they want to. It seems this place. forgets that sometimes. Juuuust cuz a legislature passed something doesn't mean you as a officer must do it!

Citizens pulling over traffic violators, what would they be driving? Joe Citizen is no allowed to have flashing blue lights in the front of his vehicle, that is impersonating a Peace Officer. The law states I have to stop if I’m involved in an accident and emergency lights not Joe Citizen. So, now I won’t need a city sticker, Driver’s License or insurance.
What could possibly go wrong.....?
After all, any police officer knows that traffic stops are a piece of cake - nothing bad EVER happens...

I welcome having some non-sworn “traffic monitor” do all the traffic stops; after domestic violence calls (reportedly going to be handled by counselors and social workers), they were the worst for abuse and occasional violence toward officers.
Once they get all of these “creative alternatives to police” up and running, all we’ll be doing is taking reports on dead and injured counselors, social workers and traffic monitors.
All of you citizens out there, better cowboy up, strap on your shootin’ irons and prepare to defend yourself, ‘cuz the police done been defunded....

Lived in Berkeley for five years through 2011. This is likely to work there. It's a college town with slow streets. The 10th Amendment allows for experiments like this one. If it works for them, great, others can copy them.

Citizens don't have authority with traffic stops. "Nobody" will obey and respect them. ☹️
