The stresses of this job are real. Many think because someone moves up the ladder that they don’t have shit to deal with. That the job is just fun and easy. This job takes you to dark places and sometimes you feel trapped and there’s just nowhere else to turn. I can unfortunately relate to this guy. I am not happy. Hate the job. Hate the people I work for. Trapped. The entire country has turned on us. What’s the point in this job anymore. U arrest anyone no matter how bad they are and they’re right back out on the street. Nothing but liability.

There was a time when as u went up the ladder, things got easier and stress less. Not now. The exempts are getting constant pressure over numbers, compstat, community shit, etc that they become unbearable to be around. Then they push that shit downhill on everyone else. Remember when u would never see your commander? Once in a great while they would pop in to thank you for something at roll call. Times have changed. I wouldn’t want one of those spots no matter the pay. The mental health is not worth it. I’ve known a few that have made it to exempt now and they are not the same people. They have all turned into jerks. Too important to talk to former coworkers. Wearing three different phones and always checking them to get the latest breaking update on some shooting that doesn’t even pertain to them. Can’t even talk to them for 2 minutes without them checking their phones. YOU ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT! Taking care of your people is number one. Help them. That’s all u should be concerned with. Not how good u look and how it will affect u moving up another rung. True leaders are ones that make sure their people are taken care of and happy. Too many Cmdr’s and Capt’s that totally lose sight of that.

RIP my brother. Don’t know if it was personal reasons, job related, or whatever it was, but I hope u are now at peace. This job really affects our mental health and that affects all aspects of our lives. Talking with people these days, everyone is down in the dumps with what’s going on and how police are being treated. Sad state of affairs.

Even juvenile myopes wearing multi focal soft contact lenses
can see that there is something radically wrong with the entire
CPD command structure. That's why Charlie Beck exited
stage left as soon as he could. He was merely a place holder
who realized the job was far bigger than his abilities. This is
yet another excuse for David Brown to be gone before
Christmas. Sadly, departments only pay attention to the
problem when it starts to hit the exempts. This is a tragedy
any way you look at it.
SCC, please publish the National Suicide Hotline number as a
public service.
Thank you.

These democratic liberals would not tolerate 1/100th of what the police are having to deal with in their workplaces. Huamn rights commissions, HR, lawsuits, etc. would follow for just a taste of the violence and hate police are having to deal with Top on COVID and your have a stress pressure cooker. Police are supposed to maintain complete control and calm in the face of all of this. Guess what, human beings dont work that way. Such a tragedy. Should be a wake up call.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The Professional Counseling Division / Employee Assistance Program, (EAP) is a unit of the Chicago Police Department that’s dedicated to providing “free and confidential” programs for all active and retired department members and their families. This unit was established in order to assist department members in the management of the demands of their job, and its impact on their family and professional life.

Our staff consists of clinical therapists, sworn police officers who are alcohol and substance abuse counselors and one (1) sworn police officer who is assigned as the Peer Support Program Manager. All members of our staff specialize in working with police personnel and their families. In order to maintain the privacy and confidentiality, we are located in our own standalone building in the West Loop with plenty of available parking. Our services are available by appointment, or a 24 hour emergency assistance.

Call (312) 743-0378.

This breaks my heart, not only for the officer who felt that suicide was the only option, but for his family and brothers in blue. It's just too much!
I am moving back to my roots in Omaha, NE. Checking the boxes, condo on LSD has sold, my job allows me to work from anywhere in the world, and moving company has been booked. I just cannot live here any more and am fortunate financially to be able to move. I have called Chicago home for 15+ years and love this city, but the last few months have been..... There have been dark times, but I feel it is going to become worse before it becomes better. This is the first time that I have not felt safe here. I am not blaming CPD but the inept leaders from top to bottom. Police officers hands are tied with no support from all branches in city hall. It makes me sad. Maybe I'll come back one day but for now Omaha it is.

Thank you CPD for all you do and I will definitely continue to follow your blog.

RIP Dion Boyd. This is incredibly sad. It sucks knowing people that take their own life and wishing I could help. These are horrendous times for us. We are demonized in the media, the courts, by politicians, teachers, celebrities, athletes, neighbors, citizens, people we try to help and even other professions that you wouldn’t suspect. I guess being on the inside of this organizing and knowing that we are people, at the end of the day, is something no one else seems willing to accept, unless they personally know police officers themselves. Be kind to each other. We never know what someone might be going through - maybe an act of kindness might just be enough to allow someone to feel comfortable enough to want to open up. I just wish this would change - we all go through some rough shit and need good people during a time of need. The whole world seems to be against us so we really need to strengthen our bonds more so than ever.

Sorry for the rant but I don’t want to see any more coworkers choose this. Please, just talk to someone you know on the job that is kind and discreet, we all know a few that exist, even if they’re not a close friend. None of us want to be haunted by the memories of laughs, conversations or simple greetings we share with someone who then does this. We would rather be there to help you work through your issues.

RIP Dion - you will be in my prayers

Spoke with a friend yesterday who is Copper in the Burbs. He said a guy he knew working in a South Suburb took his life at breakfast with His Family.

If you are having a tough time, reach out to someone who cares about you. Unless you're a total jerk, there is always someone willing to help. Plus, in my 26 years as a Police Officer I have it through personal experience that jerks never do themselves. It is usually the Guy or Lady that you would least expect who takes their life.

Listen this is a job, a job where you put in your hours and go home to family and friends and come back the next day. When my tour is over at the end of the day I take off the uniform and go home to relax. I don't think about the police department or police work. I don't even discuss police business when I am off. TOo many officer's eat sleep and dream about police work! It's not that serious for me, it's just a job which I get paid 2x a month sometimes 3 if I work overtime which I only do cta for social security benefits. 80 days left and I am walking out the door 23yrs of doing this job and after 41yrs of working it's time to ride off into the sunset and TRUST me police or police work will not cross my mind or be missed except. Just once a month th when I check my account and say oooh yeah. God Bless you all stay safe and remember this is a job, when you go home leave the job at work and enjoy life

Not a LEO, but a civilian who now lives in Colorado. I will keep his family and all CPD in my prayers. You folks are going through a horrible time now with the asshats attacking and the total lack of leadership in the mayors office.

None of this is worth your life. If you are on the edge, please seek help. There is no shame in asking for help and it is available and confidential. Please stay safe, love your brothers and sisters in the department, and support one another.

The vast, vast majority of the public respects, supports and needs all of you. Don't let the ones who make noise drown out the love and respect the public has for all of our first responders, especially law enforcement. We are the ones who privately pick up the tab at a restaurant when we see a group of you eating, have the blue lives matter bumper sticker on our cars, and, now, who are praying double time for you.

Things will get better, but we need you to work together to get through this. Thank you for what you do. You make our world better.

It breaks my heart to read some of these comments. Don’t diminish for a second the love and appreciation the majority of us have for the men and women who wear the uniform. We know the sacrifices you make. We know the dedication. And we understand the journey day to day is much different because everything good and right is on the line right now. Our Country is the battle to save itself & Chicago is the epicenter of the fight to save Justice, Law, & Order. Put on the Full Armor of God. This is a spiritual war ~ you are on the front line. You are all in my prayers. You are never alone. Psalm 91.

The last few months have been the roughest times for every police officer in this country. Every police officer I know was disgusted with the Minnesota cops and we all felt that inevitable feeling of what was about to come, the dormant agitators, all the political hate groups that were just waiting to spring up and begin there rhetoric of anti police, anti government.
But this has been the worse by far than anything we've experienced. We are depressed, broken down and feel rejected spiritually and physically. Were only human. What has helped? Well in no other time in my career have I been inundated with words of encouragement, acts of generosity, thumbs up, nods of encouragement and real human compassion from the citizens of Chicago. I know this to be the case with my peers as well. This has gotten me through bad times, and by bad times I mean those horrible thoughts of just giving up, saying forget all this, it's just not worth it.
I know there are many civilians on this blog and I would just like to say thank you for staying true to your ideals, just as we have. If you don't realize it , but I'm sure you do, these are probably the most incredibly important times for our democracy, our way of life, our freedoms and our county right now, we must act to preserve our great country, city and neighborhoods now. This police officer is just one consequence of what's going on in our city and country. I pray for this man's family and would like to tell them he is in a better place. One life is one life too many to be given up from all this insanity.
All I can say is please help one another, this job is just that, a job, don't make it everything, at checkoff, leave it all at work, decompress, however you can do it, just do it. Go home to your family, hug them when you can and enjoy all there is to life, away form this job. You are the master of your destiny, and you can do anything you wish to in life, just stay on the straight path, don't take the easy way out, honor, integrity. You don't have to be a superintendent or higher up to be happy, you have to be content with yourself when you look at yourself in the mirror everyday. [26 yrs on and saying goodbye]

So very sad, but no judgement here. We all have a lot of demons and we keep them in the iron vault! People say.. talk to someone and get help... Your not alone... There's always hope...but in ones mind only self help is left... It's like being in a locked vault with no light and there is no exit door! I hope his family knows that no matter how much love or open hearts.... Some things cannot be fixed or so it seems at that time. Our brother is gone, no bringing him back but he made a decision and I guarantee he thought of all his options just wasn't able to make the choice of life and love. I will pray for his soul and may Gods love bring him peace.

This past May, the 18 year-old brother of a freshman student at my school passed away after committing suicide. We teachers weren't told how it happened, but the family asked that the school community be told honestly that it was a suicide attempt. My head of school sent a notice to everyone with this prayer at the end and I found it quite beautiful. I have amended it slightly:

"We ask you to help the Boyd family through this season of loss. We reach out to you, God of compassion and the source of every comfort, and ask you to touch them with your unfailing love and kindness. Be their God who comforts them as they are going through their struggles. Come alongside them in their pain and strengthen them. You are close to people whose hearts are breaking, to those who are hurting.

Help the Boyd family find their joy in you, for it is your joy that will be their strength. Help them to trust you as their God of hope. Fill them with your joy, peace, and hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Help them experience the love, joy, and peace that are the results of your love for them. May they sense your presence in this hour of need. Welcome Dion into paradise, where there is the fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever."

Be well, all of you. Your lives all matter.

Please talk to someone. This city isn't worth the stress. I used to work in mental health-I hope you go home each day and and don't think about the load of shit directed at cops these days. It will get better (your life).

I have known Dion since he was a recruit in Englewood . I also had the pleasure of working with him . Dion was a class act . Unfortunately no matter how Nice a person someone usually has something negative to say about you . That wasn’t the case with Dion . He cared and was down to earth . The one thing I truly liked about him was that he never allowed being promoted to the way he treated people . He stepped up big time when a fellow officer was murdered under his command . Very , very sad day ! Rip Dion

I hope all his acquaintances, friends, and family get the help they need. Suicide is one of those things the US society does not deal well with. It is so painful, and leaves a mental scar when a loved one, friend, or acquaintance takes their life.

No job is worth this. Unfortunately when they get into that dark tunnel, they can't see any better option as a way out.

Take care of yourselves before taking care of the "people" of chiraq.

I will never forget the advice given to me by a former CO-worked.
Had “one of those days “ when EVERYTHING seemed to go wrong.
When changing into our civvies at the end of the shift, he said:
“No matter how your day went, when it’s over, leave it in the locker with your uniform at the end of your shift.”
No truer words were ever spoken!

My wife and I are so very sorry -- for the family of Deputy Chief Boyd, for all who served with whom, for every real police officer of the CPD, and for your families.

Those who stand on the Thin Blue line and those who serve in our nation's Armed Forces are the bravest men and women of our society. We are in awe of you. You command our respect and the respect of millions upon millions of law-abiding citizens. You have the gratitude of each and every one of us.

Please, look past the foolishness and ignorance of those who have no just cause to oppose you. Set aside the daily burdens of your work. Remember that you are first a man or woman, a son or daughter, a brother or sister, a husband or wife, a parent or aunt or uncle, then a distant second, you are a Police Officer. Take care of those first things first. Don't let your job jeopardize those first things.

Our prayers for each of you.

May G-d bless you all.

When CKS left 002 and Dion came in, he introduced himself to everyone and brought in food trays to roll calls for at least a couple days. Everyone was happy and morale improved with him as the Commander. When he moved on, people wished him well but wanted him to stay. These few things are what I know of the man and it speaks volumes that he was a decent man and boss. God Bless You and Rest In Peace Sir.

Talking to someone can save you from dark thoughts. Don't be afraid to talk to someone. It is a good thing to have outside interests but even those that do, even those that lead very fulfilling lives can still find themselves questioning if they should leave this world. We have partners, bosses, coworkers, friends, family, EAP, peer support, and your medical benefits to find a doctor or therapist outside of the department. Find someone you trust and if you don't trust anyone then take a leap of faith. Give yourself a chance to let someone help you through the hard times.

So sad and overcome with emotion about this. I offer a homemade prayer that I wrote that I believe is fitting for police officers. Here it is, let me know what you think. Oh dear heavenly Jesus our father and st Michael the chief of the angel police. Please watch over the new arrival of your heavenly police department as he now starts on his first day in heaven walking the beat. Now go new heaven angel officer you’ve earned your wings. Now in heaven where there are no bad people you may walk this beat for all eternity. May you see all the old timers who have passed on and are now employed as the heavens angel police force and talk about the old days of the likes of Obrien street and the area 6 flying squad task force I/F etc. heavens police force is a place where the coffee is always hot, the uniforms are always sharp and roll call is always on time. God bless as you are the newest roomie angel cop in heaven. May you bee the sheepdog who protects the wolf in heaven and be the peacekeeper of the think blue line. AMEN. Thank you, I’m going to try and have this prayer printed and sent to all the active duty police officers. God bless the former Area 6 I/F task force

I feel what you felt and the darkness is sometimes overwhelming. It is just a job, but these “bosses” seem to find a way to destroy you and your families lives. 20 years and it can be taken from you in the blink of an eye. Sometimes the pressure is too much. But I’ll keep moving forward as hard as it is. Be safe all

If you feel this strongly, do consider leaving the job if possible. I am looking at other professions. We used to go back and forth, the public praising us, then something bad happens, then the public dislikes us, but I have never seen it so negative for so long. I do not know if the pendulum will swing back, with police getting public support. I hope things turn around for us, for the good of the citizen's and for the good of police.

Another sad story for the cpd. Condolences to family and friends. Stress is cumulative and if we don't get it out it eats you alive. Everyone I know on this job is working towards that pension and that last day on the job. If you are not there mentally and physically you lose. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, don't suffer in the dark alone.
