Morale Down?
- As the number of murders in Chicago soared in June, there was a huge slowdown of police activity that the police union blames on rock-bottom morale and distrust of Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
In the first 28 days in June, the number of murders was up 83% compared with numbers from the same period in 2019, Chicago Police Department statistics show. And the number of arrests was down 55%, street stops fell by 74% and traffic stops dropped by 86%.
Police Supt. David Brown said Monday that police activity slowed because fewer people have been on the streets “because of COVID.”
But John Catanzara, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said Tuesday it’s more than that. “I’m not telling them not to do police work,” Catanzara said of his members. “But I hope they just slow down and decide ‘Is this necessary?’ before they do it.”
- There have been 404 complaints of police misconduct — everything from allegations of excessive force to verbal abuse, and improper searches and seizures.
6 officers have been relieved of their police powers due to complaints
5 cases have been referred to state or federal law enforcement for possible prosecution
242 cases have been referred to police internal affairs because they involved procedural violation, like covering name tags.
And add to that, the reports that COPA is reopening numerous disciplinary cases from eight and ten years ago, and attempting to hammer officers for cases long since closed and filed away. You will recall we predicated this years ago when COPA was first constructed because they'd need a "history" to prove that they were "tough on cops." Never mind that they're actually re-writing history seeing as how these cases were closed. Now they're open again and COPA is insisting that everyone (except the police) has perfect recall of incidents dating back a decade or more.

Arrests are down because of Covid but the vile crap Lightfoot and her friends have been saying about police officers has crushed morale. The evil hating people Lightfoot put in positions to hurt police officers has everyone scared to death. Everyone knows how much she hates police officers. She doesn’t hide it. It’s hard to do the job knowing your city hates you for no reason at all. Also not having a contract going on 4 years now doesn’t help.
What are the DemocRats gonna do when no one wants this job? Proactive policemen are what keeps a city and it's residents safe. It seems like their answer is to hire a bunch of slugs who will take reports. Anyone with half a brain realizing taking a report doesn't accomplish jack shit.

By the time the police are called, many (most?) of our "clients" (not talking violent criminals here) are too far gone for any meaningful, "touchy-feely" help.
These are social problems that a police officer gets maybe 10-20 minutes to resolve something that took years to develop. Then it's off to the next stacked job.
To think that something like this "SWAT team" will make a difference with things as they are is a fallacy. They won't be able to undo the damage that resulted in them being called in the first place, either. Particularly in the 10-20 minutes they too will have to defuse the situation.
This kind of SWAT needs to be applied long before someone dials 9-1-1. Better yet, how about increased family interaction & responsibility prior to these problems rearing their head? It shouldn't "take a village" most of the time.
Getting the police out of the "social welfare" business is a good idea. It will show how inadequate the resources for handling these problems truly are. This kind of thing has been dumped in the lap of law enforcement because we're the only ones who will answer the phone after 5:00 p.m. & on weekends, let alone actually send someone out. Unfortunately police haven't been provided the resources to adequately deal with these problems, and yet, get sent to deal with them every day. And we do deal with them. Most of the time things turn out okay, and so they continue to send police. But our solutions are temporary.
In the absence of these resources, "SWAT" will be another bandage solution to an arterial bleed. The resources to handle these chronic problems don't seem to exist.

I can only speak for myself, when on duty I do the job the best I can. A days pay for a days work. Off duty I turn off and just go where I have to nothing less nothing more. I only get paid to do Police work while on duty. Three years no contact. I just want to retire and leave this place in my rear view mirror. No one wants Police work done. I wish they would defund the Police Department so we can get more time off.
There’s no fixing this department sadly. And we ain’t voting our way out of this. Even if our contract got settled tomorrow with a 19% raise (LMAO!) morale would still be in the dumps. Morale only improves when you retire, quit or sue the department. It’s just that simple.
Let me 1st say, if there are any cops out there still doing work, they are absolute MORONS. Why risk getting jammed or losing your job?? Look what happened to those 2 Atlanta cops for doing THEIR JOB? If I got that job, I would have woke up the slumper and moved him along. As a retired lieutenant, I have to agree with you. It took me about five years into retirement to really get over the job. I found the department to be a corrupt department, run by petty politicians who favored patronage and cronyism over competence. The petty discipline system was the worst. No corporation in the Western world treats its employees in such a disrespectful manner with every minor allegation, complaint or mistake the subject of an investigation. Constant paperwork and nonsense flowing from the commanders, many who should have had the job in the first place. At first, I loved the job . But, as you go along into the years you learn to hate coming to work and can't wait to get out. Under today's conditions, I probably would have retired much earlier

The Chicago Police Department's Officers never had any problem with any of the "Minority" neighborhoods or the people who reside in these very neighborhoods. The problem has ALWAYS been the Democrats, the plotting, the disproportionate and unfair scapegoating of Chicago's Finest has built a fake facade which has matriculated into a sociological alarm that those who are the less informed in these neighborhoods are very susceptible to directional influence. This influence in turn, guides the less informed, who begin to believe in this false belief that it is real and the threat is imminent, thus hating the very people who defend and protect them. All the while the Democrats who planted this seed of discourse move their chess pieces to make the American people slaves to their will.

Those that are in power and those who protest, continually criticize the Police for being proactive and using their God given instincts to work the street and stop, interview and interrupt those who wreak havoc and violence on the street. Chicago Tonight, on Monday 29-Jun-2020 interviewed three persons who are “Outreach Workers” in Chicago. One of those “workers”, a gentleman by the name of Ramon Hooks of the Targeted Area Development Corporation, attributed the violence to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that people have been kept indoors for so long. Maybe he missed all of the neighborhood videos which proved the neighborhoods being rocked by this violence definitely were not complying with the “stay at home” orders.
Mr. Hooks also blamed the rise in violence to Social Media “beefs” which resulted in gun violence. This reasoning would indicate that persons of color are unable to control their emotions and must immediately pick up a gun to solve these “beefs”. If Ramon Hooks is correct about Social Media driving this violence, then what will Mayor Lightfoot’s program to expand free high speed internet to low income families do to the violence issue. Will the neighborhoods violence issues increase with the gig speed that brings the Social Media into the neighborhoods at ever increasing speed and reliability?
Just curious, but how many bodies are assigned or detailed to IAD. Sworn and civilian. Enough to man a few cars where needed?

And who wants to be the police or even attempt to be the police? Policing is DOA! Just handle your calls and that's it. If someone must be placed under arrest attempt to arrest, but if they resist let them go. It's not worth it. All Democrat controlled cities are going to see an extremely violent summer. I'm predicting 24 iced and 108 shot this weekend.
Everybody and their aardvark in the media are blathering on about the 'violent arrest' but I cannot find a single word about what drew the officers' attention to these people (folks) in the first place other than 'it's a city ordinance violation'.

Wonder why police officers need to emotionally “check out?” Answering calls of babies murdered. Still the vast majority of police care more than the people whose children it affects. The Left has tied our hands of the possibility of any proactive policing & threatens us on a daily basis with imprisonment for doing a dirty job that someone has to do. What actually is there left to do? The Left is okay with this behavior because it’s not hitting close enough to home. They can steadfastly blame it on systemic racism. Where have 50 years of civil right’s policy & affirmative action actually gotten us to cure any of this? Just wait until the Left sees the fruits of their misguided protests. Violent crime is on the rise and somehow pouring more money (that always seems to be a high risk to low return) into communities that already have ample opportunities thrown away in them is going to fix this? “Tough Love” as my mother called it is what is required, not this Namby Pamby nonsense.
Police Supt. David Brown said Monday that police activity slowed because fewer people have been on the streets “because of COVID.”

No one care if this dummy embarrasses himself privately, but when he represents the Dept. people outside the city limits may actually believe that's true. The south and west sides never shut down. Got my property tax bill also, the public schools take more than 1/2 incredible, substandard so called eduction, Schools with less students than staff, billions being spent and building new buildings giving money away to connected contractors with massive cost overruns, never forget even the liberal media calls state of Illinois the city of Chicago the county of crook most corrupt and United States of America! Work on yourself harder than the job. I spent time with a peer support guy from Minniapolis today. Thost poor cops got doxed and had to move their families out of their homes to keep them safe; not a word in the media about it. Three causes of PTSD Accoeding to Dr. Jonathan Shay are 1. Experiencing interpersonal violence, 2. Dehumanization of the enemy, and 3. Betrayal by leadership. Cops are livingnthru all 3 now and further the feeling of betrayal of people they served and protected. It has never been this bad. Get around friends and family that understand and will support you and write a daily list of 3 things you can be thankful for; this can soften some of the barbs hitting you during these difficult times.

Three children in as many days have been riddled, this is EVIL. These people condone this because it does not fit their political narrative, they too are evil for their silence. They know the cause and solution, yet said cause and solution do not fit the narrative. It is easier to blame you for your Profession or skin color.
Professional Police/Fire/EMS are necessities in a civil society, some of them know this, but the ones who don't have the loudest voice and are not being told to tone it down.
They need US more than WE need them. It is time to leave.
I do not like anyone telling me what to do with my life, so I am not going to tell anyone else likewise. But if you want some training from somebody who has spent almost 20 years in blood and shit...if you are young and on any of the above mentioned Professions, spend your energies looking to ply your trade elsewhere. As for me, too old to start over, a couple years too young to retire, leaving as soon as possible when that day comes. If you have worked here, you have learned to be resourceful.
Its time to leave. They own it, it's just bricks and mortar, I still own the memories. Four generations of Chicagoan's who built and battled for this city will end, to never come back. Normal America still exists outside of these democrat city upside down worlds. Besides, you know nothing about being the police, mr. millennial, boomers were the police at one time, and those days are gone.
As a retired lieutenant, I have to agree with you. It took me about five years into retirement to really get over the job.
