- Taxpayers spent nearly $66 million fashioning McCormick Place into an emergency coronavirus hospital with 2,750 beds this past spring amid fears that COVID-19 patients would overwhelm hospitals in the Chicago area.
Those fears turned out to be unfounded. Just 38 patients were transferred to the sprawling convention center — meaning taxpayers’ cost for the makeshift hospital turned out to be more than $1.7 million per patient, on average.
But top aides to Mayor Lori Lightfoot say her decision to initiate the project with the federal government and the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority was an important “insurance policy” at a time of “immense emergency.”

I think it was worth it to calm down all the Karens.
They should have used it and other facilities to move any sick nursing home residents out of their nursing homes.
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts should have done the same.
That would have saved ten of thousands of the elderly and infirm victims of uncaring governors.

Since it's barely worse than the flu as you believe SCC, why are cops even eligible for line of duty status? All of these cop covid19 deaths should then be reclassified and the benefits granted to spouses should be returned. Prior to covid19, have any cops that died from the flu been categorized as a line of duty death?
Any cops that minimize covid19 need to be consistent and argue that line of duty status should not be allowed for us if we die from it.

Well... I dunno. This virus IS for real. Here in Hildalgo County, Texas we have been getting 200+ cases and 20+ deaths per day. So it is more then just a minor "respiratory illness". There is a nightly mandatory curfew.
The really bizarre thing is that so little has been published on the details of the virus transmission. But is spreading and killing like wildfire.

Chicago and illinois should be declared disaster areas and the federal government should step in immediately. Once the first officer to die was granted LOD there was no turning back for the department. In the first officers case, word was that he was told by management he had to report for duty, knowing he had a pre-existing condition. Once that occurred if the city-department didn’t grant LOD, the family would have filed suit for tens of millions. LOD was probably much cheaper.

I agree. All these alleged brilliant infectious disease control people & I had the very same idea. Think of all the lives that could have been saved by not returning Covid patients to nursing homes. Don’t fool yourself, the Democrats were hoping for a few less people on Medicare. Me with my 15 year patched together bachelor’s degree figured out what the real end goal was.

Airborne spread. If you're susceptible, you'll get it. Takes more than a mask to keep it away. The protocols that have been successfully used by the Chinese are HCQ and azithromycin. Has worked well, though not for all. Bottom line is that if one has been exposed to cornoavirii in the past, the odds are good. If not, then co-morbidities need by addressed. If someone has a thick neck; (the classic apnea trait), one should be concerned, as hypertension and obesity are more likely. All of which are risk factors. Isolated areas have public health issues due to many other variables, such as funding and care facilities. Retirees with low income tend to go to places that are low cost. With low cost we expect low tax rates, and thus less for public health care. There is no free lunch.
