The Chicago Teachers Union is calling for Chicago Public Schools to slash virtual work days in half citing "stress" over too much screen time.
The union called the eight hour virtual workday "unrealistic and inhumane" in a tweet announcing the petition. The group is requesting screen time be limited to four hours for educators and students [r]ather than the eight hours currently planned.
“We ask that school hours online be shorten (sic),” the petition reads. “If online school was to be 4 hours, students and teachers will have more time for schoolwork, personal lives and themselves.”
While the union cites student “stress” in its advocacy for the shorter work week the petition makes it clear the move is aimed at educators.
Cut hours from eight to four? How about Groot propose cutting salaries by the corresponding 50% then? She would save taxpayers billions and instantly gain some semblance of credibility being able to stand up to CTU hardball tactics. She won't.
Jesse Sharkey has demonstrated that he runs Groot. He's like a dog trainer putting his pet through its paces. He threatened an additional strike to keep schools closed in the face of all sorts of medical evidence. Groot caved.
The smart money says Groot will cave again.

Don't forget the 45min lunch break. So teachers are really only teaching about 4.5 hours in front of a computer. And don't get me started on the music, art, gym, and computer teachers. They're really phoning it in while making easy money

Student & teacher stress? During the day I am walking the dogs and sometimes I encounter school age kids walking around, not a lot but some. I see high school kids normally but last week we saw a little girl perhaps about 8 or 9 years old zipping down the sidewalk on an electric scooter all by herself. She turns into the park made a rounds then zips down the sidewalk again. I remarked to the spouse, shouldn't she be at home doing computer learning and why is a child of that age out by herself. The spouse says, maybe that’s the recess!!

The teacher's unions, not just in Chicago, but in other large urban areas, say that virtual learning works. Now, here is a cost saving measure where the mayor can be a pioneer. There is no reason that a school needs a teacher in every classroom; One history or math teacher for every ten schools and learning broadcast into the classroom . Just put a lower paid proctor in each classroom. Imagine the money that would be saved with laying off 9 out of 10 teachers? I don't think the outcome of educational achievement would be any different then what is going on now. Reading, math and science are among the lowest in the state now and most of these HS graduates struggle in college. Time to try something new

I’m a teacher at a Catholic school in the burbs and we have a different schedule if we go remote- from 10am-3pm, 1hr classes with 15 min breaks. We have block scheduling, btw, so students four classes per day and a lunch break. We did have 80 min blocks but our school admin asked us how it was working out and based on the teacher responses, they slightly shortened the day from 8am to 10am. We are a small HS though so the kids continued to be graded pretty much the same as before (we didn’t switch to pass/fail which killed some schools bc kids just stopped showing up) and if students didn’t show up, admin went looking for them. So honestly, that’s the best case scenario for a remote teaching schedule. But why CPS/Union reps didn’t hammer this out before the school year started- well that’s just bc attendance is super low and they are lowering expectations for when they have to release stats.

A friend of mine dated a CPS teacher a few years back. She taught 4th grade. More than half her class was illiterate, couldn’t read tests to take them. The principal insisted that the teacher “take the test” for them, yep, totally illegal...and the whole damn school was in on it.
I send my children to catholic school. They’ve been there since pre school. Would never send my children to a Chicago Public School. So we need to investigate - maybe there's a COTA (Citizens Oversight Teachers Authority) and we could staff it with COPS... Go in and review the daily punches, movements, breaks, lunches, smoke breaks, bathroom stops, when they check in, check out, when they log on at night, when they log on during the day. Make a home visit to check for green screens and fake pictures of them working. Verify internet connection outages, credit card usage, etc.
