Inspectors Attack!
Unsubstantiated rumor, blowing up all over the comments and (we're told) assorted social media:
- All those rumors about inspectors were spot on. Area and TAC teams got hit today.
Inspectors got 25 SPAR’s today on 1 Homan team, 1 area team and 2 TAC teams and a detective during 2nd watch
- 4 no seatbelts
- 3 no in-car-camera
- 9 no vest cover
- 3 beards / no bump card
- 1 dark windshield tints
- 1 suspended license plate
- 1 replica star
- 1 multi-colored Jordans as uniform shoes
- 1 mullet haircut
- 1 no taser / mace / baton
Buckle up, boys and girls and bend over.
We saw Larry at a press conference today, still wearing two-stars, so he isn't "in charge" per se. But we could see this and we offer the following advice:
- wear your seatbelt - it's actually a State Law;
- get a camera ticket number if it's non-functional. It's easy, just ask your sergeant;
- no vest cover? you get a uniform allowance, go get one. If you order a vest thru the Memorial Foundation, you even get a voucher for a free cover;
- if you don't have a dermatologist willing to sign a bump card, we can't help you;
- personal car infractions are the easiest thing to remedy;
- they still make replicas? We had to hunt down a jeweler two decades ago for ours and then we only carried it in our wallet;
- plain clothes sneakers for plain clothes is cool. If you're in the blue suit, it isn't difficult to find black sneakers;
- mullets? We harped on this years ago - if you get tagged for a haircut, make sure that EVERYONE gets tagged for a haircut. You know what we're talking about. Same for jewelry and dreads - the standards are STANDARDS...across the board. Document it;
- taser/mace/baton? Good lord people, how much do they have to emphasize "de-escalation"? Everything is deescalation now. At least have the tool nearby, even if you never intend to use it.
Don't give the inspector the easy movers. Make them work for their numbers....actually, maybe don't fix any of the easy ones. That way we smarter and older guys can skate on the other stuff.

Makes me think of a couple of my favorite inspector related stories. Big Bird was waiting in the lot at ‘Albany Inn’ to snipe coppers when “someone” gave the “Time check on the working zone” heads up (God bless Stan Nowinski and his Zone 10 ‘Wild Kingdom’). A certain, now crusty old timer, relocated to the King Gas Station at 43 N. Homan and called in a “freaky assed white dude jaggin’ off in an unmarked police car” from the pay phone. Big Bird keyed up and said “I’ll see you all at check off”. Hysterical.
Same legend boogied from Big Bird as he signed out of Night Narcotics (someone tell the kids what that was) when confronted for being out of uniform. Terry tried to order him to stop as he walked to the door after signing out and scrambling the sheets into a pile, but the Legend ran for the stairwell, making good his escape.

How the heck can you possibly get gigged? Kids if you hear, “Sgt Ward in the district” or “squad can I get a time check?” There is an inspector around. Or a fist fight in the parking lot. My first week on the job, inspector and a PO fist fighting in the parking lot. PO won. While the fight was going on, another PO was writing a parking ticket and and putting it on the inspectors car which was parked right in front of the old 016, Gayle St, on a hydrant. 20 of us got sent to 016 out of the academy cause the Vietnam vets were retiring 20 a month in 96 and 97. Of course we all left for busier districts but that first year was awesome. 32 years to get days, 34 years to get airport. My FTO was 62. Half the tour was drunk by check off. Captain we had was still by test score. I obviously didn’t know a lot but I knew to keep my mouth shut and eyes open.

Funny you made mention of this SCC. I was sitting in court yesterday morning and all I saw around me were officers with mullets, earrings, and basketball shoes. I mean let’s be real here, it’s been a long time since the days of “Big Bird” showing up and writing up a whole crew for the most pity infractions. There’s a goofball DCO in 025 that always wears his crown hat, the issue is that he also wears the 1955 old school star on his uniform that was replaced in 2003 with the current star. He is all over the 025 FB in photos with the commander and his immediate sergeant and never told to stop wearing the old school star. That’s a perfect example supvervisors seeing an deliberate uniform infraction and not making the officer come into uniform standard. Shit I temper back in the 90’s while on a gang team one day my sergeant pulled to the side one day and told me not to wear my little rascal Buckwheat shirt ever again at work because it could be seen as racist.

Idiots that have their license plates scraped off a lot of the letters the tinted glass mostly driving pick up trucks.. Yeah I know some some of it is legal. The front one is not and have it so dark and you look just like the punks that you’re trying to go after you have to know the rules before you break the rules it makes it more fun.

People (not folks) like you would not be happy with anything. They could double your pay and you would still whine. Follow the rules. You are no better than anyone else and then STFU.
In a back log from the beginning of tour to the end. Many of the beat cars are down. We are Severely undermanned. Glad this dept has its priorities straight. What we need is more inspectors/cpts. Hope these police officers handle some of the backlogged jobs/people calling for help while you are trying to write me up for my uniform.

I do think the standards have dropped with the CPD and was shocked & disgusted by some of the women with long braids or stringy hair that was not put up. Some of the officers look like slobs and not professional at all.
Rather take a seatbelt spar than be unable to quickly and efficiently exit the car if need be and it getting snagged on equipment etc.

However, about two years ago while working VRI I had an unknown M/2 Sgt. ask me if I had a bump card. I did. But an M/1 police officer was standing right next to me with a beard nearly 2 inches think and this Sgt. never asked him. SCC is correct. The rules must apply to everyone. PERIOD! Hair styles are easily the biggest infraction. Lots of male cops wearing earrings and jewelry. Looks horrendous!
With all the outside oversite and monday morning QBS, all the more reason to look Professional and yes does your appearance command respct was over every mirror in the district. Really look in the mirror and be honest.

CPD looks pretty sorry in its uniforms today...There's a reason it's called a uniform.
The bearded and tattooed look only makes you look like a pirate...
A lot of men and women have given their lives wearing this uniform, so lets respect it.
Some of us look carelessly dressed up in our uniforms...you're only going to make the inspectors job easier.
These police officers didn't look like a slob in the academy, so why do it now?

I remember those signs. Is also remember we stood for inspection more often than not. Todays police remind me of the movie “Idiocracy” everything dumbed down and ghettoized.
Lots of company men in these comments. This job has never been worse than it is now and some of you moronic blue shirts cheer this shit on. Most of us hate this job and view it like a prison sentence and the dept come in with this shit when it can barely keep people headed for the exits.
In regards to uniforms, give me options but have standards. The 5.11 pants are much better quality than the flying crap cargos. Do anything policie and you are ripping them to shreds or blowing the crotch out. For the next few days it would be nice to have a legit hot weather shirt or something a bit darker to so the sweats don’t show. Same for the winter there are warmer and thinner materials that don’t add bulk and give you more freedom of movement.
Not a cop, never been a cop. 26 years military. Your appearance is important to the public, if you look like a slob, you will be treated like a slob. That includes 3ft weaves with beads.
Crawl, walk, run. It sounds like this is the first step to get things back on track. Take care of small problems and often the big ones go away.

It's busy so you get to look like shit? WTF kind of logic is that? What does that have to do with getting a haircut and shaving? Or wearing proper shoes? Or putting on a clean well fitting uniform? Or carrying the proper equipment? Or getting a city sticker or registration on time?
How about YOU get YOUR priorities straight. This way the inspectors wont waste your precious time so you can handle some of that backlog. Have some fucking pride about yourself, look in the mirror and take ownership of your bullshit, fix it and be an example for others.

I came on the job with a 29 inch waist and I retired 10 years ago after 34 years with a 30 inch waist. I shined my boots and pressed my uniform. Why? I took pride as a Chicago Police Officer like I did as a US Marine. You want tactical efficiency or tactical comfort? Shape the fuck up.

I have to do your job for you. The leather jacket was an optional item and a GO was issued that it cannot be worn after a certain date unless you are grandfathered in. 018 in the late 90's weekend night the district was up for grabs. We had 3rd watch held over midnight roll call was just grab a radio and get out there. In walks an inspector and is promptly thrown out of the station by the WC. " GET THE F*#+ OUT OF MY DISTRICT WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR YOUR B.S. TODAY, WE HAVE POLICE WORK TO DO!" The point to the uniform requirements is to instill basic discipline in the police force. If you can't follow simple directions on uniforms, such as ammunition type, how can you be expected to follow the rules on handling domestics? I'm to expect that you have an understanding of the law and constitution, but can't wear the right shoes to work? That's what got us to where we are today. We haven't enforced our rules in a long time, but that is changing. Either commit to doing it right or face frustration and misery.

You can’t return fire without a vest on? That’s news to me. Never heard of a partner not returning fire because of a vest

It is rather ridiculous that we look as bad as we do. It’s just a cold hard fact that most CPD don’t care. Take a trip to a suburban courthouse and look at the local / County / ISP how they appear for court. How many CPD show up in horrible faded pants, worn out boots / shoes, uniform shirts that look like they were taken out of a garbage can just before court with missing name plates or stars. Just look good. We get a uniform allowance for a reason. It’s a completely simple thing that will keep Inspectors from noticing you. If you look like you rolled out of a gutter and came to work, you are putting a giant target on you and then you get mad when someone notices & write ups follow. Use the uniform allowance and keep people off your back.
The Dept can’t just take a piece of equipment that was approved and we bought. I agree it’s an OSHA complaint.
Yes they can. They can get rid of any alternate uniform at any time. Outer carriers are not required, nor is cargo pants, molle vests, baseball hats. They can 86 them whenever. If the department mandated them they would have to pay for and issue them like they did the flashlights decades ago. You chose to buy that stuff, they didn’t require it. They could put us in 80/20(75/25’s) and crown caps tomorrow with all leather belts and there isn’t a damn thing we could do about it.
