RIP Supt Rodriguez
One of the first superintendent we served with:
Matt Rodriguez, a high-performing student who quickly rose through the ranks of the Chicago Police Department before becoming the first Latino superintendent, has died.
Chicago police announced Rodriguez’s death at age 87 Wednesday evening on the social media site formerly known as Twitter.
In 1992, Rodriguez became the first Latino superintendent in city history, beating out 41 others who applied. A deputy superintendent at the time, Rodriguez had been a finalist for superintendent twice before.
He left after a Tribune article connected him to convicted felon Frank Milito. If we recall correctly, he met semi-regularly with Milito at a cleaners that was a known hangout for different Outfit members. The Rule 47 charge was a stretch at the time, but it was politically expedient to enforce it at the time.

Chicago police department is applauding itself on hiring 83% people of color. Convenient they don't specify white hispanic as part of that. 50% of the united states is white hispanic. Doesn't matter because we're all brothers and sisters in blue.
I've met the best and worst people from all races and genders. Just keep the hiring standards one step above the post office.

Stop Bitching, 3rd watch officers are being sent to 1st watch hours training. The question has been brought up and they (city) can schedule us for training any way they want. WE as Union Members need to change this in the next contract, each watch stays on its own hours and WE should be able to pick our own training days.

Agreed. I’m a 3rd watch officer and they scheduled me for an upcoming midnights class. They are morons.
My dad worked with Matt early in their careers, and then I worked with Matt early in my career. A true gentlemen who never forgot you. RIP Matt.

Upon looking back, he looks like a normal police superintendent with the parade of clowns that have succeeded him.
I wonder of the lack of "outfit" involvement is partly to blame for our current woes? Seems to me that Chicago was in much better shape 25 years ago. Organized crime is still crime. But the outfit had a reputation for policing things in their own interests.

A ton of 1st Ward guys were considered good guys. This all fell apart and was exposed in OPERATION GAMBAT. The Outfit controlled power out of that 1st ward. Their downfall lead the way for Daley Jr to cement his power as mayor and centralize it in Bridgeport. Where his buddy Matt was out of, and had to then fall on his sword. Ghost payrolls, trucking scandals, fake minority airport venders, all Outfit controlled. Burke the former “cop” racked up millions, as a result of this power group. It goes on and on.

These goofs also schedule 3rd watch officers to the midnight classes like they did to me, when there was 3rd watch classes available on the same day.
RIP, I can't imagine the stuff he saw and dealt with during time on the job.

Another good read is "The Outfit" by Gus Russo about OC in Chicago.
A bit dated about OC in Chicago but has some interesting chapters on the CPD "Captive City" by Ovid Demaris.
Chicago has an interesting history for sure.

The department is looking to suspend 8B and 9A furloughs in 2024 for the DNC. 100% guarantee the FOP will agree to this with something in “return” that the Department will always fuck us over with. The resignation announcement was on my RDO---worked CTA Special Employment. The driver on the S. King Dr. bus told me that Supt. Rodriguez was just the fall guy. No one on the bus disagreed with him, least of all R/O. And I still think so today.

The department got corrupted by merit and phone calls. Dad put me here, dad can you get me this spot, I’d really like it, or dad I got this problem, can you make a call. Multiple bites of that merit apple. Fortunately some have left, or are leaving, using clout to corrupt other departments, only to be replaced by more corruption. Unfuckingreal!

He was firm, but fair. He downgraded a two day suspension to a reprimand after I went to a hearing when I was assigned to the old Technical Services.
I saw him regularly in the Jewel at Harlem/Foster
A great man who was one of my Dad’s partners in Organized Crime…….one of the best!
Latino in name only. His mom was Polish and he didn’t speak a word of Espanol. Not the worst that we’ve had but a figurehead while Townsend ran the Department. Had his own private suite at Resurrection Hospital where he frequently dried out.

The union and JC has lost creditability with the whole weak ass glamor/media/social media attention only Friday updates. The city keeps beating officers into the ground to suicide, depression, grief, angst, retirement, suing frenzies, stripped status(broken toy section/376), financial hiatuses, no pay statuses, mental insanity/mental pain, divorces, extremely contagious and deathly exposures to the illegals, sick/ill and deathly ill, resignation, you name it. Of course, you will take these type of beatings and deal with it. And you ask what has gotten better/ or will get better? Nothing. The last 4 years should tell you things only will get worse, not only will the city not give a fuck, the citizens don't give a fuck, the government doesn't give a fuck, nor does the union. 7th and 22nd, hug your children/spouse and enjoy your time with them, fuck everything/everyone else including this job.

Absolutely agree. With all respect and admiration, RIP Superintendent Matt Rodriguez.
Just think about it, Supt. Rodriguez was made Superintendent after working in various units (not just stopping by for a few weeks) this smelling guy's claim to fame is working half of his career in the academy.
Maybe the old way was better..

If you pay attention you can see all of these degrees are from the same schools; St. Joseph, IIT, Chicago State and Lewis in Lockport. Not exactly bastions of high intellect and rigorous study.

Right, and they’re trying to make him out to being a good boss. He resigned from Supe due to gang ties and associating with felons. He was under investigation for a Rule 47. Thank goodness there will be a lot of police at his funeral. Other than that we would need a police detail.
