Bad Weekend for Off Duty Officers
An off-duty Chicago police officer died in a traffic crash early Saturday in southwest suburban Tinley Park.
Officials responded to the intersection of 179th Street and LaGrange Road about 2:30 a.m., according to Pat Carr, village manager of Tinley Park.
The officer and another driver were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where the officer was pronounced dead, according to a village news release.
No word on the identity or unit of assignment as of this writing. Sympathies to family and friends.
Two off-duty Chicago police officers were robbed Friday night in the South Loop.
About 11 p.m., three women — two officers and a city Aviation Department employee — were walking to their vehicles on 23rd Street near Wabash Avenue when they were approached by a gunman wearing goggles, according to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.
One of the officers, a 30-year-old woman, was trying to pull her badge from her purse when the gunman pointed his firearm at her and told her “don’t reach,” according to the report.
Among the items stolen were their Chicago police IDs, badges and firearm owner identification cards, the report said. A city Department of Aviation ID and badge was also taken from the third victim.
No one injured, but also no guns taken. Stay aware and alert boys and girls.
And this one a lot of people are talking about:
- A Chicago police officer has been relieved of her police powers after a deadly accident in River North.
The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the 300 block of North State Street.
Police said the 40-year-old officer was off-duty and driving a white SUV, when she lost control of her vehicle and jumped the curb — striking a 56-year-old woman who was on the sidewalk.
The victim sustained trauma to the body and was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Traffic accident, multiple tickets issued.....and the Department stripped her?
And before we hear from twenty or thirty people in the comments section, the media is all over this one and just about every outlet has something about it. Whatever the investigation turns out to be, that's what it is.

If she had waited until she came to a red light, a woman would still be alive.
Imagine what it is like for normal people?
How long is the wait for a FOID Card and then another wait for a CCL
Condolences to the officer’s family.
It’s a shame that you have to walk around the streets with your head on a swivel, but it turns out it is a necessity during the criminal times we live in.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t other CPD members hammered. Condolences to the victim’s family. It’s regrettable the officer finds herself in this situation.
When you are outside the wire in Chiraq?
You are never off duty.
Tim was a good kid. He was very respectful and humble toward everyone. Prayers for his family.
Heard a handful of 5-11 wearing hair gels bought tickets from the afternoons LT in 025 after she reamed both roll calls for not buying her tickets.
Bet she doesn’t even know how much shit yall talk about her when she’s not around.
Bravo.
“One of the officers, a 30-year-old woman, was trying to pull her badge from her purse…”
If this is true, did she think this would scare the offender away? Was she planning on using it as a ninja throwing star to thwart the offender?
Lots of rumors floating around. No street deputy on scene. No IAD. No field sobriety test.
PPO from 09 with one year on the job.
Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
...Hold on, thought the police are the problem....
.
Why walk at 2300 S. Wabash?
A couple of bars that cater to black professionals on Michigan Avenue south of Cermak. Maybe they were parked on Cermak.
Pull a badge out against a gun? Is that new use of force training now?
Lots of rumors floating around. No street deputy on scene. No IAD. No field sobriety test.
If allegations are true then the fix was already in from the minute the sector sergeant responded to the scene and realized who this officer is. The maui investigators along with all involved in this investigation will be promoted or hidden in nice cushy spots. That’s the reward.

There is no wire.
No inside the wire, no outside the wire, no wire, ever.
All are on duty always.
Yes, Marsha, this is how it is.
Street Deputy Melean was notified for the incident on State St and REFUSED to go to the scene. What’s going to happen to him ??
It's tragic that someone died...I'm sure there is more to the story. Well know more as time goes by.
That being said, I've never liked the way units try and strongarm you into attending these "Christmas" parties. I have even felt repercussions for politely saying "No, thank you" when personally asked to purchase a ticket.
I remember being called into the Sgt's office and told "I really want you to come to the Christmas party" and FYI this supervisor hated me. What a joke that he had to nerve to do the bidding of his overlords here. It wasn't about Christmas, I promise you.
I have always suspected that some of the monies for these parties goes into a slush fund. The same one as the money for "promotional exam classes" no doubt. The hall is usually donated, as is the mediocre food (If not, then at least discounted) I remember the time two police parties were held at the same venue on the same evening. The tickets to the parties were 15 dollars or more different as I recall. WTF?
Attendance is also taken whether you realize it, or not. Entire tactical teams always go. In fact, anyone on a management bid or position always attends 100%. Not a coincidence, I think. Call it payback. I call it the "Chicago Way"
So many bad things have happened at these "Yule Celebrations"... Embarrassing things. Things not talked about here on this blog.
I just never saw the real "Spirit of Christmas" being celebrated in any way here, so I always chose to decline. And something tells me I was right.
Stay safe officers...
Prayers for slain officer.
The police play by rules. The perp does not. No rules, no fair play, no God. There are people you cannot deal with.
How long, or how much will it take? What is the breaking point?

Considering the seriousness of the accident and the apparent circumstances and there’s no street deputy, no IAD to administer breathalyzer, tickets only? She must be awful heavy. This has all the earmarks of Kotschman 2.0 and we know how that ended for all those involved.
what the hell was her badge going to do??!
As SCC has stated many times, if you don't punish criminals, you get more crime. That includes cops. If you don't chase and arrest criminals, those criminals will eventually make cops victims. Perhaps the cops should chase them next time.

I worked at 018 for 15 years and I will not go Downtown offer me Dinner at a fancy restaurant and I won't go. Crime is 10 times worse than you think use the 30 foot rule with those wearing hoodies and masks.
This is embarrassing. We have to be better than this.
You wanna talk bad weekend?
King Kitty ordered me to cease and desist all charges for food on the FLOP credit card when I’m off AND Mom didn’t make her Sunday meatloaf. I’m about to ask Mette to book me an appointment with the in-house shrink. Hope her couch is big enough.

Lmfao!
F the department
IAD doesn’t come to the scene for breathalyzer they show up at district or Area . The IAD Sgt is on call and usually takes about an hour to arrive after being notified. This is common on Officer involved shootings. I doubt you were an integral part of the investigation and are just gaslighting. If you were an integral part, and are so offended get a CR # on the highest ranking Officer on scene. Don’t complain on blog .

How many other coppers will fall on the sword and reap the firestorm? Totally idiots in this day and age. She killed a woman now reap what you sow!
The next day her gun is stolen in a burglary? Is this a double down on stupidity or just a bad couple of days?
025 LT (white hairs, sometimes purple) has ruined 3W soo bad that their doing reverse senority for January. She ruins anything she touches and manipulates the naive 5.11 mustache wearing 2 year wonders. She loves to divide the watch and helps them turn on each other. She was useless as a Sgt and as a LT. SSC start researching what happened to ot there. Shhhhhhhh.
I worked at 018 for 15 years and I will not go Downtown offer me Dinner at a fancy restaurant and I won't go. Crime is 10 times worse than you think use the 30 foot rule with those wearing hoodies and masks.
Then don't go Mr. Cranky.

Then she shouldn't have been carrying her star. The star is merely decorative unless you have something to back it up, and while it won't scare anyone away, on it's own it might just get you killed.

how many coppers will be taken down? Not worth it an accident someones loved 1 is dead because of her, now you will have to suffer consequences if the call was handled as it should of been no problem. Years ago had an off duty copper driving around drunk waving his gun at a couple of young teens a boy and girl on a date, road rage we stopped copper, called for sergeant took copper into station, tried to deflect dui in came street deputy. End result was ordered to dui him,and deputy said if we refused we would take a suspension, this was before all the cameras. sorry when things happen that involve alcohol do the job!

Did CPIC tell them there was an allegation made that she was drunk? If not, they wouldn't go out. IAD doesn't go out to the scene to investigate. They go out to administer the blow if someone alleges she was intoxicated. The Street Dep doesn't have to go to the scene of fatal crashes either unless someone alleges intoxication or some other misconduct.
23rd and Wabash? They've been trying to gentrify that area of the South Loop for over 10 years. Revel Motor Row is one of the most opulent event venues in the city (for weddings, corporate parties, etc.) actually...but trying to clean up that neighborhood is a lost cause.
As far as police being victimized outside of work goes...it's safe to say at least 30% of the people we work with refuse to carry a handgun off-duty. They believe it will never happen to them...or they are downright inept and ill-prepared to live in this city.
The DUI test is not automatic when you’re off- duty. If there were no allegation then she want required to blow. Now if she was on-duty that would be a different story. It’s automatic when you are on duty and in a department vehicle.
All those getting upset over these off duty officers not carrying need to calm down. If you are going out to tie one on, you are not supposed to be carrying. And if they were and got in trouble for being under the influence and armed, you all would be the first to crucify them for that as well.
Even if you are sober and armed, what are you supposed to do when an offender(s) have the drop on you?
Armchair quarterbacks are the worst!
I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the Officer who was killed in a Traffic Accident at 17900 S LaGrange Rd, Tinley Park. I live approximately two miles from this location, and I want to say this is one of the most dangerous intersections I have ever seen. What makes this even worse is the intersection at 183rd and LaGrange is worst. If anyone drives past these locations, PLEASE be careful. Very dark, poor lighting at both locations. Again, please be careful.
The next day her gun is stolen in a burglary? Is this a double down on stupidity or just a bad couple of days?
Was it bonafide Burglary or a report to hide stupidity ?

Hey, dickwad, those aren’t her tickets, those are tickets to honor those who retired. YOU should buy one too, but from the sounds of you, your retirement party will be held in a phone booth

He was notified, there was no allegation at the time, when the situation changed they did not update the notification
She blew a zero on the breathe test. 4 tickets and was probably texting when she hit her.
