Won’t happen, Snelling has a bump card and actually gets a rash when shaving. That said, the department does need to crack down on the issue. Way too many “tactical operators” out there with fake cards and groomed goatees and chin straps.
Let’s not stop there though! Our uniform standards are horrible, the worst that I have seen in 29 years. Stop with the backward/sideway ball caps or winter beanies. Get rid of the cargo pants, no need to have the side pockets at all. Return to all black shoes/boots, we have a female in my unit that wears dark purple shoes on the street.
Finally, enough with the facial jewelry! Pierced tongues, eyebrows, noses, cheeks are fine for a barista but we are professionals so dress the part or get me a coffee.

We started chatting, and he told me he worked in 11, before switching departments.
As a retiree from 15, we had a nice chat.
He told me that his department had 28 former Chicago guys on their department.

How can this be true when there are doctor notes on file? Certain ethnicities cannot shave too close due to skin irritation.

I legitimately have severe acne, diagnosed since I was 15. Nothing they’ve done has worked but I’m able to manage it by keeping a very short, pretty much a shadow length. I actually need the exemption, otherwise I’d have puss filled pimples all over my face. And I’m in my mid thirties, using prescription acne cleansers every day as prescribed. I’ve never gotten a bump card because I never needed one.
There’s nothing more I hate than the guys who have full beards and are simply blatantly ignoring the standards. The exemption does not allow full beards. It does not allow you to shape and form the beard. All of you guys are ruining it for people who need the exemption.
Oh-em-gee! What are most of the TACtards going to do? No more beard means they won't look cool and "intimidating" to the community. It will also make many of them look like they're 17 years old. Skinny attire looks lame with no facial hair and so do the baseball caps. The tattoos will also look weak with bare cheeks full of dip. I can foresee resignations coming...

While I’m all for more of a cohesive “uniform” throughout the department, I think a few items should be addressed.
#1) This issue isn’t simply one for the inspectors. I get it that morale circling in the gutter and we’re tired and overworked, but that’s no excuse. Sergeants bear more responsibility in ensuring this is rectified as well. These coppers are passing through roll call looking like this and not a peep is said. It starts at the immediate supervisory level, and 80% of these issues can be handled immediately.
#2) In regards to the “bump cards” I see an issue in the blanket revocation for them. My “bump card” specifically states the following:
“A Board-Certified Dermatologist certified that the above-named Member has a skin condition that is aggravated by shaving.
Based on this diagnosis and General Order 98-2, 7A - Skin Condition Aggravated by Shaving, this Member is exempt from the Department's Clean-Shaven Policy. The above-named Member may maintain a full beard:
That does not exceed one-quarter inch in length”.
It also states under expiration: “None life-long condition”.
While I don’t grow a large monstrosity of a beard, I keep it trimmed at a short length as prescribed, and usually clip it every 2-3 days. Clean and professional.
The problem that the city may run into this is that after being viewed by a board certified dermatologist, it was determined that I gave a lifelong medical condition. The city for 15 years has granted medical clearance due to my condition, and now at the stroke of a pen they just take it away?
This is something I find there will be issues with, and it will be grieved and won.

The reality is the department should be moving in the other direction and allowing managed beards. They’re socially acceptable, and as long as they’re kept tight and shaped normally, they should be allowed. That being said, they’re the employer, so it’s their decision, but you can have a beard and still look professional.

They all look like they actually work on the beat unlike current CPD where 50% are either units or hidden inside, cowards. These days all the hidden department cowards calling for uniform enforcement who work inside have no idea how much more functional the molle vest is over the vest under shirt setup. Just look at ISP they all look like they're wearing coresets. Molle is the only way to go.
People get on here and always gripe about tattoos. Don’t understand why. Half the department is overweight and look like pigs in a blanket with their vest barely hanging on their bodies. Most of my ink was done while I was in the military. How about instead of nitpicking something trivial like tattoos we have weight and fitness standards for all you fat bodies who can’t run more than a block without having a grabber. Yeah a mustache will make every nasty on this department look like Wilford Brimley.

Used mollle for a few years and ditched it. Hard to go hands on with all that crap hanging from your chest. Arm mobility is key. Fully support the stricter requirements. We’re city cops, not SEALS. Wish they brought back the leather jacket.

Definitely need dress codes enforced, with the uniform checks it would be easy to at least look decent. Can remember not long ago when you took your uniforms to the cleaners on a regular basis to have them cleaned and pressed, and you would notice many other shirts and pants hanging waiting to be picked up by other respectable coppers! When you look like the punk on the streets and wonder why your treated as such, look in the mirror. On this rant why are so many coppers unhealthy,fat slurping that free soda and discount fast food? How many have diabetes and other preventable health problems? Look at Larry in shape looks like "the police" intimidating how about you? How many pension checks will you collect? We make plenty of money get to the gym, get a trainer if you need it!

I think some of the women on the force could grow impressive moustaches, from what I've seen of them.

There was a guy J.V. in 017 who could not walk up one flight of stairs to back me up at a domestic. Obesity in a police officer is extremely unprofessional. Cut down on the pizza and beef sandwiches.

I believe that the dept should allow everyone to grow beards to the standard of the bump card. Most other departments already allow this. It’s not affecting the way we police and what’s the harm? Look at the @JOINCPD Instagram page. 3 year wonders labeled as police recruiters. They have zero experience and obviously aren’t motivated to actually do any police work, yet they are the ones telling everyone how great the job is and that they should join…. Hmm if it was so great why are you a recruiter with zero time on the job? Also, when you look at the page, they post recruitment videos, all the recruiters violate uniform standards. A few years before I retired (Sgt.) there far too many with their “bump” cards claiming some skin condition. For the most part, most were just too lazy to shave every day. Agree on the nails, braids, sloppy uniforms. Back in the day there were uniform inspections and weekly weapon inspections.
I would actually respect this if the superintendent was promoted once, just fucking once, on his own and not merit. The usual, this job is a fucking joke and run by clowns applies

The department should be enforcing uniform and appearance standards across the board instead of taking things one at a time. What if an officer has a clean and trim beard, but has a completely disheveled and wrinkled uniform with food stains all over it along with a duty belt hanging on by a thread? Never mind all the bling you see female and male officers wearing while on duty.I believe someone commented already about the safety issue presented by officers with really long hair or big bellies protruding from underneath their vest, but that cannot be overstated enough. Yes we are nowhere near policing the way we used to however shit storms can find an officer even if they are looking to stay off the radar. And the cellphones, please stay off your phone when you are on the street. I think this mostly applies to the newest generation working now, but all the posts on social media and bad news from around the world will be there at the end of your tour.

No, when I came on in 1915 every one was clean shaven and respected us, was it being clean shaven or the ass beatings that earned the respect I’ll never know. Anyways let’s do away with tattoos, beards and molle vest and we will be just like the old department.

OT: Another Chicago Police officer helpless and victimized on Friday night the 15th. This seems to be happening every week now. As I've posted before I estimate that at least 30% of our fellow officers refuse to carry their handgun off-duty. That has to change. We need to get back to firearms training and ready ourselves to "stop the threat" {snicker}...i.e. kill with extreme prejudice. This is not only to protect ourselves from getting slaughtered and corn-holed but to protect our family, loved ones and neighbors. If this story doesn't wake up our fellow officers (especially you females) nothing will. We are ALL on the menu now.

Wait until you find out that there are TWO types of bump cards. Most only know of the black printed cards. There are also red printed bump cards but only certain people have those to issue out (not through Medical Section). They supersede the common black print cards that you are used to seeing.

Take a look at the photos of past superintendents on the wall at HQ. You'll see all kinds of facial hair styles, including mutton chops.
Start with the Amin Jessani, the Commander of 019. Apparently, he doesnt know what leadership by example is. He's got some serious stylization going on...
Amin and his narcissistic ego are part of the do as I say not as I do club.
If I was written up for a bump card violation, I'd request a hearing. My defense would be a printout of Jessani's head shot from the department's own website. Why should I be expected to follow the same order he's obviously violating?

Only boomers don’t understand how society and culture evolves. Beards are commonplace in this era, just like crazy staches of the past. I don’t see the boomers wishing for every cop wearing reefers and the goofy bubble hat. As police we are supposed to reflect the community and relate. Nobody is clean shaven and it doesn’t look more professional. Only a boomer believes this nonsense. Time changes and things evolve. My fav part of the order can’t clean it up just ridiculous clown stuff

Look at other major departments. They do not think this is " clown stuff". The police today look clownish, not professional, sloppy, and sad to say, it is a reflection of their behavior.

The amount of gerber baby crying in here is laughable from those that might actually have to shave and look decent for a change. I remember when I first started and I was told almost immediately on how to obtain the so called bump card so I “wouldn’t have to do the shaving thing.” The bump card is huge with this department and County. Go anywhere else and ask about it and you’ll get blank stares. They don’t exist let alone on a widespread scale like this. You’d get a doctor’s note and that’s it for a legit medical concern. Problem is, the complacency of being able to look like a train wreck is department wide. Countless bump cards, faded / beat up uniforms, people that show up to court with no star or name plate, uniforms looking like they were taken out of a dumpster beforehand, no standards on what kind of belts or gear that can be carried, people with molle vests with every piece of equipment in the world on it, etc. People want to whine about ISP… they have standards. Their people look sharp and they are pretty uniform and stick to it. Fact is CPD went from being respected & renowned to being looked as as “don’t be this person at all.” That’s gotta change…
And stop crying about cargo pants. Some people prefer to be able to carry extra flashlight, gloves, IFAKs, tourniquets, etc. If you want to act like it’s 1990 with dress pants, no outer carriers and shiny shoes, go for it. Others prefer to be functional and there is a reason why these changes were made.

So you want us to put credence into what you said in your post? How about you learn how to use an apostrophe. When you can't write the English language in the correct form don't try to defend your personal ideas about current culture. There is a saying, "Keep you mouth shut and let people think you are stupid instead of opening it and proving them correct." Same goes for posting.
I shave everyday,but as far as uniforms go, we should not be stymied by outdated ideas when there are superior options that have been around for decades now. Even Army Rangers who were the standards for uniformity have adapted because their mission has changed. They now have the best of what is available. Don't want to wear cargo pants then don't freaking wear them, same goes for uncomfortable footwear. Our uniform standards are all over the place but I wish they would actually ask working officers what works and what is problematic.
