Podcasts

Someone mentioned this podcast of Bob Cooley being available, talking about his book and his long career spent in the darker corners of Chicago politics:

And speaking of dark corners of Chicago scandals, here's another one we just started listening to:

The SOS scandal revisited by the main player. The teaser trailers and the first episode paint a more expansive picture than what the media portrayed. Not that it absolves anyone of anything, nor the damage they did to the Department.

We find ourselves wishing Blago does one of these, naming names, from Shortshanks to Burke to Mell and right on down the line.

Fuck finnegan. Fuck his podcast. He was a cop in title only. What him and his ilk did made the lives/jobs of present and future officers more difficult. You should not have mentioned his podcast.

Listened to episode 1 of Cooley, I'll give it two more.

According to the episode guide the next ones should be better.

Couple of years ago I listened to a podcast which I think was called THE DUMP.

Named names.

Nothing happened.

Chicago.

Mentioning SOS how is it that CS is allowed to walk away clean?
After a decade plus stripped and at callback for his role in SOS he’s quietly been reinstated and given a cozy inside spot with full police powers for the rest of his career.

They can’t let the SOS scandal go yet they let JFs partner walk away without facing consequences from the department.
Court had to drop over 100 of their cases and not even a slap on the wrist.
Surprised no one is asking how CS got through the cracks as embarrassing as it is.
Seems to be he just waited it out and now that no one’s paying attention he quietly gets to slither to safety in the shadows.

He’s a piece of garbage, but Finnegan’s podcast nails it. Those of us who have enough time on to remember the old school ways of doing things have to see on a daily basis that’s it’s all destroyed. All of it. Police in Chicago will never have the same respected authority again.

It’s mentioned that the consent decree and cameras devastated a normal way of living and thriving in this city. The consent decree and body cameras are 100% the reason that animals continue to pillage this city. Also to blame is the worthless and evil states attorney’s office along with a political entity that forced the safety-act into existence.

These podcasts gave me a sense of nostalgia for this city and department I used to love. For the coppers with time on, who grew up in this city, we sadly see everyday the demise of a once very proud police department. Today’s police dept consists of nothing but suburban kids with no real affinity for this city who do a year or two and lateral out. I don’t say I blame them necessarily. Imagine if you can there was a time when you had to make serious phone calls just to get on the job! There was a time when people chose being policeman over being firemen.

Finnegan is a piece of crap who made life difficult for every other honest working officer out there, as we were all painted with his brush after his antics. Why you are even discussing him, or giving him any mentions at all is an insult to us all. Remember, this piece of sh*t even tried to contract out hits against his former partners. Too bad he didn't meet his demise while he was incarcerated.

How did CS get away with it?
Ask the dead guy. CS blamed it all on him shortly after he died in a motorcycle accident.

As far as his inside spot, the Dept is actually doing something right! They’re never going to let that piece of shit work the streets ever again.

I read Cooley's book(hard cover)right after it first came out. In fact I went through it a few times. At the end of that book Cooley went into great (emphasis added) details about some caper that both Eddie Burke and his wife were involved in, and he wanted to put the facts/details out there because he wanted him/them to pay for their (jail-able) offenses.
Fast forward 13+ years, while on vacation, I wanted to have some reading material so I decided to revisit that book again. Now on a Kindle version, while initially reading the book it seemed a bit different than the original version especially some of the material that I knew positively that appeared to be re-written. My hunch was confirmed when I got to the end again and the information about the Burke's, while mentioned, did not have all the 'exacting' details and circumstances from the original book. When I finally did some investigation I discovered that it was rewritten or changed the co-authors (?) which explains the lack of details at the end, perhaps for some type of legal issues. Bottom line, try and get the "original" version of the book to read to view the more concise details throughout especially about the Burke's at the end. Just my .02 (Stay safe and healthy my brothers and sisters.) CPD ret.

Totally agree with first post, fuck JF and his crew. All they ever did was ride on others jobs cause chaos and beefs for we all know what and then ride off with the spoils leaving beat, tact or det division to explain or defend the criminal acts. SOS we all know what it stood for and as the shit hit the fan they turned on each other and as they say first one to crack got the best deal. Sorry JF but you were a part and parcel of the fall of The Real Police….

Bob Cooley is a piece of shit. Listen to this narcissist and you just have to shake your head. Anybody who is the real police knows what work is involved to be the police. All he does is brag about how great he is yet he sleeps alone in the police car because he running multiple “hustles” and side jobs??? And going to college and law school while being the police? He even says he was policeman of the year? LOL, Okay gramps… fuck this guy he’s like so many policeman I know that never did anything- they talk a great game at the tavern and to their family, but they never did shit on the street.

This goof talks about how legit and honesty is and how he never took a bribe yet we talk about what a fuck up we are growing up and all the mistakes we made yet we always got out of it with either connections or a side hustle. Then he becomes a mob attorney? Lol, yeah, fuck this guy.

Your way of policing “back in the day” is why we are in the mess we’re in now with policing, and why no one wants to take this fucking job anymore. Reminisce all you want but it’s come full circle now. Numerous cops doing things like “we used to police” is why this job won’t ever be the same.

No matter what your feelings for Finnigan the podcast is good. He’s not sugar coating anything. Anyone on the job, especially those who worked the south or west sides , in those times will relate to what he is saying. He’s talking about a bygone day of policing. Obviously and unfortunately he fucked up and paid a heavy price. I liked him but didn’t know him real well. He was giving the bosses what they wanted but he doesn’t make any excuses for himself and what he did crossing the line into criminal behavior. At least that’s my take on it.

I can forgive Cooley his sins because he did repent and help take down some really scummy mobsters and politicians. I'm glad he's lived long enough to see Burke in the trickbag.

He does come off as a bit of a BS artist in the podcast though. Then again he's about 80 years old and his memory may not be that great.

Finnigan is a jagoff. He gave the bosses the numbers of guns they wanted.

THat came at a cost to CPD and non corrupt cops.

The episode on his brother Bill's murder in a south side, Bridgeport?, tavern is something. Even tied in tangentially to the "A Murder in Canaryville" homicide.

Rahm Emanuel fired Byrne from Director of Park District security after he testified in front of the Police Board on behalf of McDermott (his son-in-law) Byrne then got him a job as a teamster driving a Park District gas truck at $100,000 a year.

Byrne is now dead. Word is he got another good job after he died.

Agreed. I knew Jerry. Say what you want, but if you called a 10-1, you'd want Jerry coming. The problem with that SOS shit, especially his team, was the totally lax supervision. But the bosses loved what they did, they came in with the numbers. And as one poster said about 175 CR#'s, that wasn't normal, but not unheard of back them. Knew many guys with over 100 CR's (Most in Gangs, Tac, etc.).

Jerry was prosecuted, sentenced, and did his time. You're still angry at him? Go fuck yourself... You sound like a broad crying about the copper you blew in the parking lot of Duggans that didn't call you back for a "date"...

The man did his crime and served his time. I'd take Jerry EVERYTIME over the other fucks on that team... Even CS and TS (immature d-bags), they beat their cases- It's over. I wonder if you crybabies worry about street criminals (killers, armed robbers, etc?) Nope, because the new hair-gel police care more about their jacked up Jeeps, tattoos, and tightly trimmed beards than doing police work.

LIstened to a couple of Jerrys podcasts. The thing about how all the work he did and his bosses getting the benefit of his work and his not getting a meritorious bump to sgt and his admitting that all that work he did was useless except for his bosses. Hard chargers should hear that take on it.

The lesson is the bosses will use you up and throw you under the bus when your shit goes sideways and they knew what you were doing all along but when you get caught they will be like sgt schultz, "I know nothing".

I’m not a cop, but listened to the podcast. As a lifelong citizen of Chicago, I long for the days of JF policing. No I don’t condone the stealing, it was right for him to go to jail. But, Chicago was great when it had real cops doing real police work like JF. Now criminals rule the city and they know it. It almost makes you long for the corrupt politicians to be back as mayor, because now you have know nothings who let the animals run wild and handcuff the police. Chicago will not survive very much longer under this lack of leadership and lack of policing.
