Why?
We suppose if you're on your third marriage and somehow end up with a kid while you're in your 50's, but seriously.....why?
- Police officers and firefighters would no longer be forced to retire at age 63 under a proposal that's being considered by a city council committee.
Supporters say it could save the city money and would help with staffing levels.
The proposal is still in the planning stages at this point, but the chairman of the Committee on Police and Fire said there are a lot of good reasons to consider it, despite concerns about the job of police officer and firefighter perhaps being better suited for younger people.
Police officer retention has been a big concern in recent years, with retirements outpacing the city's ability to hire and train new recruits and staffing levels falling far below ideal numbers.
First of all, the city chased (or is chasing) all the old timers out. They don't want to pay the top of the wage scale. Fine, see ya! The accompanying "brain drain" is also a concern, but no one is addressing that.
Another couple things they aren't addressing:
- increased medical usage - as you get old, you're body is breaking down in subtle ways. exercise and diet can stave off the worst of it, but the fact is you don't heal as well or as quickly as you age.
- we don't know the numbers by heart, but every year on the streets is two or three years off of your life. The actuarial tables prove it - cops already die far in advance of charted life span years.
Is this another cynical ploy to "save" the pension?
And then we've got these quotes:
- Police and Fire Committee Chair Chris Taliaferro said there would financial benefits for the struggling police pension system with the department down, he said, about 2,000 positions. "That means there's 2,000 less officers putting into our pension system. This allows our officers to stay on an additional two years, would allow them to put into the pension for an additional two years," Taliaferro said.
- Alderman Nick Sposato, who represents the 38th Ward, is a former firefighter. He said the demands of the job can be tough, even on younger members of the department. "I personally think it's a bad idea to change it to 65. Sixty-three is even kind of old, a little too old. I think it should probably be 60. But, I'm not going to ask to lower it, but I think it's a bad idea to raise it," Sposato said.
- Plus, as former first deputy police superintendent, Anthony Riccio told ABC7, older officers typically have fewer complaints against them, and thus fewer lawsuits.
Plus, Tony would be able to promote an entire new generation of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Stay as long as you want and rake in the cash. Pretty soon with OT and pay raises we’ll be making over $300,000 per year.
More coppers are leaving at 50 and many that I talk to don't give a shit about the medical insurance. Many are pre-55 and have 20 plus and they're leaving due to the environment the politicians and activists have created.
I'm amazed when I look at the 9161 rank how anyone with any semblance of sanity could be maxed out and 55 and still on the job.
There's a life outside of the job, department, and city. Embrace it!
I’m just happy I’m about to be done. More goofy gimmicks to fix something that isn’t causing the problem. Why not change where you live too. LOL!
Let Riccio "Tony" promote generational policing we need them. The hell with this job, I made sure my son never fanthom the idea of being a cop, I'm proud to say that in a year he'll be graduating from a 4 year university and will be making more than what I make after 23 years on this job. So keep telling your family this is the place your brains are only good for.
Nice to hear from Riccio who popped up like a fart, what a two faced scumbag.
It was almost comical when I first started otj and they had no retirement age. You'd see guys working in their late 60s. When was the last time you saw two stars on a reefer sleeve, I'll tell you, late 90s. The old commander of 018 Devito was 70 when he finally retired. Townsend had to go kicking and screaming. It was a different generation who grew up with work being what defined you.
Want to retain officers? Offer a DROP program…I know it’s been discussed. Anyone where it might stand?
This allows our officers to stay on an additional two years, would allow them to put into the pension for an additional two years," Taliaferro said.
Put into the Ponzi pot... there, I fixed it.
Are there really any who don't choose to retire at the first moment they can?
Plus, as former first deputy police superintendent, Anthony Riccio told ABC7, older officers typically have fewer complaints against them, and thus fewer lawsuits
Then why did you retire so early to play head security guard for a corrupt security firm connected to city hall? Dwarf.
Geritol Youre too old at 63 to be the real police
If so Retirees should sue to get their jobs back
This is a laugher!
If this city was really smart, the city should go back to just high school diploma requirement instead of a college degree!
I noticed most college people never want to stay as Police Officers in Chicago and leave for other jobs when they open up!
This police dept. can let you stay until 80 years old and it won't matter!
I'm out of here as soon as I max out and moving to a Red state for my safety and sanity to get away from all Democrats!
Do your time and get out and I mean out of that shithole city and state you'll enjoy living with civilized people believe me.
Department has about 900 over 55 now. 300 of those are wage slaves who need to work til they die. That probably averages out to around 25-27 turning 63 each year. Bingo, a recruit class they don’t have to try to hire.
Eureka! Let’s hang on to the highest paid officers as they ride the medical for another 2 years. Brilliant!
Ricio never did that....they are a premier law enforcement family
Get out as soon as possible.
Take away the overtime and people will leave. The next wave of retirements, people hired in 1995 and after will be overwhelming.
One benefit that comes to mind is when he/she retires at 65 years of age they may now go directly in Medicare and not have to go without health insurance for the time between 63 and 65.
They're hoping the LEOs keel over before they retire to save paying out pensions.
They can see the train a'coming.
St Louis budget "St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) spokesman, there are 312 vacancies out of the department’s 1,224 commissioned positions.".
That is 25 percent missing..Now due Chicago which works out to approx 3000 plus..in the future.
First class of 1966, pension very good to me.
Raising the age would be a good idea because the city definitely can’t recruit new officers. The residency rule and lack of support is the biggest complaint. So anyone considering LE goes to the suburbs who don’t require residency. Besides, many cops over 50 and most over 60 are at the top of seniority and get desk spots. The city should rehire retirees to do desk jobs or less intense jobs to help with the manpower. It’s sad that Lightfoot drove out so many great veteran officers. Someone should run the actual numbers of cops that retired and young cops that flat out quit before retirement during Lightfoot’s destruction.
Ricio what a piece of shit. Everyone he promoted was a walking cr #. I loved it when IAD labeled him "the worst judge of character in the history of the police department".
The brain drain started in 1998 when they expanded the merit promotions to Sgt and Lt. All of those promoted may have been honor roll students at their CPS schools but none of them have a higher than a 3rd grade reading level.

He’s an absolute joke and grifter! Never forget how he’s kissed Lightfoot’s ring and smeared all those poor cops on TV for the George Floyd Bobby Rush popcorn sham. He showed his true colors. No morale compass
That little midget’s merit promotions were a joke!!! Good riddance
Perhaps have elderly officers work inside positions. Do away with the young desk dollys, put them on the street. Nobody under 50 should be working inside.
Retired here...I think they shouldn't change the rule. Some people don't know when to retire or what is good for them. The 63 rule is there for men and women who can't make a cogent decision about when to retire.
This job is for younger people. plan properly and you can have a good retirement. Why would you want to stay? Let's face it, most 62 year olds aren't in beat cars going to calls. They are inside or downtown on a phone call or a favor.
I once asked someone with over 30 years on "Why don't you retire?" and he angrily responded, "Because I don't want to retire.." The scenario about the 3rd marriage and kids in their 50's does exist. I have heard them say "I want to put my kids through college"...I even saw one fellow who could have righteously gone out on disability struggle to come to work so his benefits and pay would not be reduced. His health was severely compromised. What a nice man, but what a shame...There is a time to leave written on the wall for all of us. ASAP is that time.
Poor prior planning on your part, does not constitute a necessity to me...
The feds set a mandatory retirement age of 57 for law enforcement officers...and they do a fraction of the physical exertions (except the Border Patrol) of what a beat cop does in any major city. There is a reason for that mandatory retirement age and SCC has laid it all out in this clip.
They actually believe raising the age of retirement is going to significantly increase our overall numbers? And fix the pension gap?
They are so out of touch. Lot of time wasted for nothing. We're talking about a handful of people at most.
How many coppers are mentally and physically fit past 55? 10% of those who make it that long? The others are either mentally unfit or physically unable to do what May be required. And there are not enough inside spots for the actual old timers because those spots are filled by young women/girlfriends. Everyone knows it. Everyone sees it. Nothing is done about it. Union says nothing because they partake in it. And since the inside spots are filled by women, old timers are forced to work the streets well past their due date.
Mandatory retirement should be 55. If you’re in a situation, you want a 62 year person of either gender to back you up, again maybe 10% of them have kept themselves well enough to help, or some 40 year old? I’m a betting man and I’ll bet the 40 year old will be more helpful. As people age they lose strength and dexterity. Let’s not talk about the outlier hero who is crazy in shape and can still tumble. The average 60 year old, how do they look? Can they run? Can they wrestle on the floor? That isn’t required everyday. Not even monthly. But once a year I find myself in those situations and I want a physically able person next to me.
Some officers have over 33 years on the job and can’t leave because it is their identity. Just hit the click button as many times as required and get to enjoying your life! There is life after this job . Don’t be afraid!
A desk officer in old 019 stuck around because he wanted to retire with the most years on the job. Well God rest his soul he didn’t make it. He didn’t collect one pension check. I think he had 40 some years on the job. His wife was on too. Sad!
To correct an above post, Commander Di Vito retired at age 63 after working on CPD from 1957 to 1999.
There you have it. The safety of the city and it’s inhabitants is based around lawsuits.
Make it no retirement age but the officer must pass the power test.
I read there were only about 130 sworn who were 60 or older now. Does anybody really think that number is going to increase?
Let Riccio "Tony" promote generational policing we need them. Good one. The majority of the students getting ready to graduate college this year will be in fields that will be rendered obsolete by AI and robots in the next 10 years. They will be serving the plumber and policeman's dinner, if they're lucky.
The only people staying until 63 are those that got on the job late in life and need the years for pension. The few who aren’t in that group, the guys who love the job, have no life outside the job or are in such a cushy spot there is no reason to go. They definitely don’t work the streets and are no help to the average patrolman, training, guidance.

I think you would be shocked at some of the old timers, many are still in good shape and were/are the "real police!" Now lets see that opposed to how many millennial coppers are still do nothings, this is their first job and the bingo point still living with mom and daddy? Given the opportunity many real police would like to return albeit on a part-time basis to at least teach the new kids how to d the job! I know the youngsters will complain "we cannot do the job anymore,we are so restricted!" Now get your barbie jammies on get the warm milk and relax at mom and dads house!

True but how many are begging to get back otj? the answer well over 100 who now realize when you leave you have to get a job where your accountable, and your medical is not 1 year you get maybe 5 days and they no pay status! Oh and many less days off and a 1 week vacation to start, plus much less money! But then again for your sanity maybe it is worth it! The old "be careful what you wish for you just might get it!" applies.
Thankfully most of Riccio’s crew is gone. Some of the biggest morons on the job are his people.

I hope they raise it to 70!!

Yes, those who work AND still find time to enjoy themselves. Officers who don’t take this job home nor let this job control their every waking moment.

Like most union jobs as you achieve seniority, you get to pick your spot many of the old-timers could work inside if they choose work or school car be part of caps Some thing that the desk dollies do, but that would be for the old timers plus the knowledge they couldn’t still on the young kids on the job is priceless
I’m still waiting for that Philadelphia plan so I can get out at 52!!! I won’t hold my breath. We got the lip service at FOP election time.
More desperation from stupid people who defunded the police, signed a bogus consent decree, smeared the police and allowed crime to flourish in Murder City. Do nothing more than the basics. They created the circumstances, and it has now backfired on them.
This will work for CFD and I bet they’re ecstatic about it. They don’t ever want to leave there’s a guy on the job now who has 45 years on and counting.
It becomes their “identity”. It’s all they know. They get institutionalized.
No one should be sticking around until they’re 65. It’s hard enough staying past 55. Leave as soon as you can with your health and pension.
Stop jagging off your money, save and leave this shithole as soon as you can.
Two extra years to fire you and take your pension.

Some are on their third marriage with toddlers and teenagers running around. Others are in a lot of debt, and yes they whine about both all the time.
These days it’s a competition to retire with the most years on the job.

fuck that I'm 54 maxed out and I don't want to work inside. I'm no hero not saying that but I could not sit still at a desk stuck in side all day.
Keep an eye out on the pension board cases. A member of the family often cited on the blog is trying for disability and will surely get it because they get everything they want, well not everything that's why they went "IOD." Definitely a two pager when the name is revealed.
