Illegal Camp Delayed
The state has paused construction at a Southwest Side site intended to house newly arrived migrants amid an environmental report that found toxic contaminants and heavy metals in its soil.
Construction was halted Sunday pending an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency review of a nearly 800-page city consultant’s study that was released Friday night. The review will determine whether the project goes forward.
The agency “still has questions regarding the study,” said Jordan Abudayyeh, a spokeswoman for Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
Supposedly, one of the questions Porky is asking is "Where did the contractors get all of those toilets?"
One question an astute reader asked was if anyone had run a Geiger Counter over the site. A lot of these metals and chemicals have radioactive properties or retain radioactivity for long amounts of time.
Someone else asked if the workers have been outfitted with haz-mat equipment while working on-site.
That begs the question, what about the residents living downwind of all of this disturbed soil particles? We are forcibly reminded of the outrage in Little Village a few years back when they dynamited that smokestack from the old Crawford Power Plant. The EPA was all over the place and we remember a shitload of lawsuits.

So they could not have placed those tent floors over dirt as they would eventually sink into the ground. Did they lay concrete or asphalt? How will they get samples then. Plus they would need a great number of samples from the whole site as one area could be contaminated and another area not. Plus different kinds of toxins in different areas. The photo shows a huge area so with hundreds of people there will be no privacy. I can see the fights and CSAs already occurring. Will they have den mothers?
They were racing as fast as they could to build this camp. A lot of money involved. Reminds me of Meigs Field when Mayor Daley rushed in and destroyed the runway in the middle of the night. Not only vehicles but foot chase policies are just plain stupid. But, I think it is too late to go back to what the policies were, not even close. I think officers are so beaten up they will just lay back for some time to come. There is no way anyone can trust COPA or any of the progressives.
The city needs to establish permanent homeless shelters in various parts of the city. There are vacant schools and factories that can be converted for this purpose. NYC has such an arrangement ( overcrowded now). No more sleeping in police stations. Lock the doors. Tents are ridiculous

I grew up in Brighton Park. My buddies and I used to ride our bikes down California Ave. 50-55 years ago. The place smelled like weird chemicals back then. The entire east side of Englewood from 55th south is almost completely abandoned. There weren't any factories there so the tent city should not be a problem, unless the railroad owns all that property.

No senior freeze. Only has homeowner's exemption. No credits due. Just accessed extremely low.

By 'fixed', what do you mean?
Do you mean: The property you refer to has it's accessed valued increased substabtially? As in doubled and doubled again? With the 'fixed' assessment now increasing the property's tax by essentially the same doubling and doubling again?
How does this get reported to be accessed properly? One of the largest houses on block paying the least property taxes.
The property should be assessed at 3 x what is currently accessed.

With cook county jail mostly empty but Tommy keeping full staffs, just like cps many schools almost empty lots of room why not put them there?
