Not an "Accident"
- A veteran Chicago police officer accidentally fired a handgun across
the street from former Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s home in Logan Square on
Tuesday afternoon.
The on-duty officer was outside around 1 p.m. when his weapon “unintentionally discharged into the door frame of a parked personal vehicle” in the 3400 block of West Wrightwood, a CPD spokesperson said. No injuries were reported. The incident occurred at an address almost directly across the street from Lightfoot’s home.
Why the officer was apparently handling the firearm is not clear. According to public records, he is 52 years old and a 19-year veteran of the force. COPA, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, has been notified as CPD conducts an internal investigation, according to the police spokesperson. The officer remains on active duty because the firearm discharge was accidental.

That's what I always thought until the past few years.
There have been DOZENS of accidental discharges with the SIG P320.
This gun seems to be a nightmare.
Many police officers simply bumped their holster into something and the gun fires.
It should be taken off the market and CPD should remove it from the approved weapons list immediately.

In regards to this story, I have more questions than answers.
He stated that he was taking his gun out of his off duty holster and putting it in his on duty holster when it discharged.
Glad no one was hurt.
It was one of those "assault guns" that went off all by it's lonesome, just like the Demoncrats have been telling us happens all the time. Thing's defective. Glad no one got hurt... blah blah blah...

It could be that, or the Officer could have been finger-fucking his pistol.
Only the Officer knows for sure.

Sig Sauer P320s don't just "go off". People are using the wrong holsters, not watching shirt tails or jacket strings, carrying improperly in gym bags and purses. All jumping on the blame the gun bandwagon to avoid suspension or termination.
It all depends on the race of the officer as to whether this person is crucified as an unhinged MAGA extremist, or if the whole thing just quietly disappears.
He's gonna blame it on the Sig;) Go to excuse when someone is doing something stupid with their duty firearm and it goes off.

There have been very rare instances where the trigger was pulled by a jacket string getting caught up in the trigger. One alert by CPD has been put out.

Carried a gun for 30 years (a Glock no safety no nothing) took it out & put it in my holster thousands of times never once fired when I didn’t want it too???? I remember some officers in the 1st district, 18th and 9th. There was an accidental discharge in the police station and no one took responsibility.
This specific officer did. So give him credit and whoop de doo if he gets 1-3 days of suspension.

There are probably close to 2 million Glocks in the hands of amateur and professional shooters. If the lack of a safety were the issue, we would hear about discharges every week. We don't. It's rarely the gun that's the problem, but rather the jerk behind the trigger.

In the pre historic era, “ When Dinosaurs walked the Earth”, we were trained to holster our revolvers with: (A) Finger OFF trigger and outside trigger guard; (B) Thumb over hammer. If the hammer rose up, that meant something was pressing on trigger.
When we transitioned to pistols ( Sig P226, which has a hammer) this continued to be taught: Finger off trigger and thumb over hammer.
This is one disadvantage of Glocks: no external hammer.
The hammer is a Safety feature!
