Just a Billion

Just the other day, Fata$$ was saying all sorts of things meant to inspire confidence from taxpayers about his priorities concerning a multi-billionaire getting a new stadium:

  • The outreach by developers to the governor’s office marks a potential step forward in what could be an uphill push to bring a new ballpark to the vacant site known as The 78. On Friday, Pritzker continued to project caution on the idea of spending public funds on a stadium for the privately-owned team, beyond typical infrastructure costs, just as he repeatedly has in discussions of a new Bears stadium.

“I set out what I think are the parameters that the taxpayers expect, which is why we need to be careful about how we use public dollars,” Pritzker said. “And a private business like a professional team, even if they’re beloved by so many people, are nevertheless similar to lots of other businesses in the state.”

Then the multi-billionaire said he expected to get....a billion dollars in taxpayer funds for his stadium:

  • The White Sox are reportedly prepared to ask for $1 billion in public funding from the state to construct a new stadium at "The 78" near the South Loop, according to an extensive report from Crain's Chicago Business.

Team owner Jerry Reinsdorf is reportedly confident in his chances of winning over the state's approval for his complex financial plan to fulfill the goal of building an entirely new Sox stadium, in collaboration with real estate firm Related Midwest, along the Chicago River.

Reinsdorf has not officially met with Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, though the report made it clear the White Sox have been in contact with state officials on the subject.

So we have is a politician speaking out of one side of his ass, and Reinsdorf (or his people) letting it be known that he expects this politician to come up with a billion dollars in taxpayer funds for a stadium, while businesses and taxpayers flee Chicago and Illinois at a steady rate.

Not one penny.
Enough is enough.
Jerry and his group purchased the Sox for just under $20 million in the 1980s. In 2022 the Sox were valued at $2.05 Billion. Thats two thousand and fifty times one million dollars. He can borrow against that and build his own stadium. We built him the one he is leasing now. Remember the promise of thriving development around there McCuddy's fans. He quashed development to secure his profit inside. How many jobs did that strategy kill.

Please spare me the " loss of prestige to the City " nonsense. We have a thriving team 8 miles north building an empire on their own dime. Northshore Jerry makes a mockery of southside baseball fans. Their loyalty has become the organization's weakness. Time to call his bluff.

And spare me the "creates jobs" nonsense. Those jobs are minimum wage. 35th and Shields would generate more jobs and tax revenue as an Amazon hub.

He better get in line. Chicago and Illinois may have spent close to a billion on the migrants. It’s hard to figure as they are playing 3 card monte with where the money is going. And they keep coming so expect to keep giving at least through the election. We don’t even have money to properly staff the CFD.

I'm not in favor public financing for stadiums. If they do, they need part ownership to make sure the team stays there.

Maybe Reinsdork should worry more about the shit product on the field than worry about getting a new stadium. The average attendance at a home game is roughly 21 K fans and in order to get that many fans in the seats they have to do nightly promotions. Those promotions often offer drink specials and discounted tickets that draw an undesirable crowd which was evident by the chunky CPS teacher who felt the need to bring her gun inside of a stadium.

Two publicly funded stadiums in just over 3 decades? White Sox don’t even put any games on free TV anymore. The team is worth over $2B b/c the business value is a function of team revenue and profit. Business value is generally a multiple of eight (or so). So that is $250M/year. $250M x 8 = $2B. Jerry and his majority owner friends should not get one cent of taxpayer money. Professional sport team values have skyrocketed in the past 30 years b/c owners nickel and dime the average fan. No baseball games on free TV (Sox or Cubs). You have to pay to see them. Going to a game with a family requires 10 times the money it did a few years ago. These guys know how to squeeze a profit out of the average fan. Let them PAY for their own team. I could see Pritzker giving his close friend Reinsdorf $400 M and claim he saved taxpayers $600 M. I hope I am wrong. I am a big Sox fan but this request for taxpayer money disgusts me. At this point, I don’t care if they move out of state.

Not to worry.

Since the real value of $1.00 has degraded to about $0.10, and may further degrade rapidly, this &1,000,000,000.00 is really only $100,000,000.00, and, should this degrading continue, may well end up being barely $10,000,000.00, if that.

I watched a game few years ago and it was a cold April day and there wasn’t more than 500 fans in attendance. I actually felt sorry for the Sox and fans.

With that said no way should any public funds be used to build a sox only park down there. Now if you want to build a mulit sport complex, bears, sox, cubs, basketball soccer, etc I’d be all for it. If you can fit it all in on that site.

Cubs and sox can play first few weeks in April’s inside and if playoffs in late October they can play inside.

And bears can call it home. 70,000 seats gets us all the events.

Whatever jobs a sports venue produces are of minimal economic importance. They are mostly part time seasonal jobs. Mostly just above minimum wage.

Now the Sox want the public to buy them a stadium to play a game that unless the public spends money can't even watch.

The Cubs spent millions to totally rehab Wrigley Field and Rham and the State told them to pound sand and give the Cubs zero taxpayer money. Reiensdork shouldn't get a penny. Zero. They have a park that what 30 years old? F off Riensdork. Sell the team already.

If Illinois "gives"/"lends" them the money for this, Illinois better get a guaranteed 9% over Prime yearly ROI from Reinsdorf (and partners). The pensions need this.

Further, Reinsdorf & Partners should have to put up the team and their other assets as collateral for this.

Further, Illinois should also pass an exit tax bill of $2 billion if the team looks to move out of state. (Pass that bill yesterday) (Heck, that should pass that bill for all the Professional sports teams.)

Enough with these teams and their bullshit.

But, but, Congress Parkway was renamed to honor the journalist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells!!

Fork you Jerry. Not a nickel for you. Go to Nashville. BJ can house the new illegal foreign army inside the park.

It’s a terrible investment. Sox fans don’t support their team; they just hate on the Cubs and their fans. If they won’t show up at the stadium in Bridgeport they sure the hell won’t show up in the south loop.

Relax, Wyatt. The cubs have won once in 100 years. They have sucked forever and never drew crowds either, until they gentrified the neighborhood and stadium and turned it into the world largest beer garden. Most of the time nobody is paying attention to the game, with it usually ending up just being a bar-crawl till you puke. The Lee Elia days were the best, with their 3000 so-called fans, as he put it. Ahh the good old days.

Real Sox fans won’t pay for a shitty team and there’s no other draw to go down there, sans a few decent restaurants. Most of the local bars hate outsiders and aren’t shy about it, so unless you’re a local you go to the game and then you go home to your suburb or neighborhood. I’m a Sox fan and I hope the state tells them to fuck off and finance it themselves. They’re worth 5 billion, take a loan ..

For those who care, retired Sox reliever Bobby Jenks is the new manager for The Windy City Thunderbolts. Former Tampa Bay manager and Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothchild is on staff also.

Absolutely ZERO public dollars should go to fund any of this bullshit. If it's such a wonderful investment, then the team owners ought to have no problem going to any bank and getting financing, right?

Anyone? Anyone? The answer is voodoo economics...
