Shotspotter is completely useless, just so you all know. I understand it's great to see Mayor Dipshit fail and we like to use the discontinuation of Shotspotter services as a point that this administration doesn't care about the wellbeing of us as citizens. But the truth is this technology is useless. Whatever company sold us Shotspotter grifted us for 49 million dollars, and I'm sure a greasy palmed Chicago politician or 2 were involved as well. There is no crime that has been solved and no life that has been saved due to shotspotter. By time a shotspotter notification comes in people have called 911 to report the gunshots anyways. Not to mention the fact that it is completely useless on two of the most important nights of the year; 4th of July and New Years (it can't differentiate between gunshots and fireworks). And do you think it will actually be useful for the DNC when #1 there will be tons of fireworks going off all day and night, and #2 downtown isn't even equipped with the technology? This is a money saver right here. They can't tell you any of this though because whichever Chicago politician and his friends/family were involved with this scam deal are still probably in office.

It's a decent tool and impressively accurate. Here's a few reasons Shot Spotter is needed:
1) Can tell the difference between semi-auto and full-auto machine guns and the number of firearms used. Will let the responding officers know what they're up against so it's an officer safety issue.
2) In the middle of the night many times people asleep don't hear gunfire. Shot Spotter will...and get us to the scene quickly.
3) People who do call 911 rarely know where exactly the gunfire came from. Shot Spotter will tell us where so we don't drive around aimlessly...possibly while an unconscious victim lies bleeding out.
4) Many times people who are shot lie about their story and where they were shot. Shot Spotter can collaborate their story within minutes. Without it follow-up detectives will be sent on a wild goose chase wasting days tracking down the "victim's" story.
Those are just a few....
ShotSpotter around my neck of the woods has discovered multiple people goose hunting! I love the country life!
I say we give the contract to Vanco Flying Lead Detection Solutions. Their no bid no contract approach seems fair. They have easy payment terms on a sliding scale. Only $750 per a gun shot detected. In some neighborhoods a man can get rich!

Is it perfect , not always, but have there been victims found shot when no calls came into 911 to report “shots fired,”. Yes, yes there have been. And if you’re that person that may not have been found bleeding out because your neighbors are just too used to the sound of gunfire to care to report it, you’re going to be pretty sorry when Shotspotter is gone.
Why is this even a big deal. Shot spotter is an absolutely useless tool to curb crime , and does nothing to apprehend offenders. Its only benefit is to get officers on scene quicker to apply tourniquets. The value there for price vs what the product delivers is idiotic. It’s a giant waste of money on a useless product that gives the community nothing.

Yes, that Shotspotter was set up to catch all the City & County workers who fire

Plenty of UUW arrests occured with a Shotspotter activation lending to RAS. Yess I KNOW this for a fact. Unfortunately what's going to happen is a promise from BJs side to sign a deal for STs new tech "Crimetracer" which is a shitty accurint/linx/nvls all in one nightmare of a UI. Enjoy using that program Detectives 👎.
Crimetracer is the same company as shotspotter.

The company, now known as SoundThinking, announced in their latest earnings call last month that Chicago's 2024 budget includes continued funding for ShotSpotter - as well as a new deal.
Under the deal, Chicago Police will pilot CrimeTracer for six months.

So what happens to all the people who sit wherever they sit to monitor Shotspotter do when the system goes down? If it shuts down on Friday what does the Saturday first watch shift do? Get put in a beat car?

The SDSC rooms are more than just shotspotter, but the majority of people posting here seem to think it's just the shotspotter room. There's still POD cameras, ALPR, and various other technologies monitored by SDSC personnel. The SDSC rooms won't go anywhere just because shotspotter is going away.
Shot spotter goes away .. and ???? We not catching the shooters and if we are they are not held responsible. The shootings aren’t going away nor are the shooters !
