20% Operational?

No investigative reporting on this rumored tidbit:

  • Wait until you people (or folks) learn that there are only two Tower Ladders in this entire city right now. Two. Should be 10. There are only two. Ask your alderman why there are only two Tower Ladders in the whole city right now. Wilson/Milwaukee and 51st/Western.

Tower Ladders are extremely essential and important in large fires. The other 8 tower ladders have been converted to a basic truck now due to mechanical issues which the city doesn’t want to repair.

Unfortunately, when something breaks down, government is slow to repair it. Reasons are extensive, but essentially, they don't follow warranty procedures, the disregard maintenance schedules, they allow unauthorized persons to service equipment, and when repairs are necessary, government attempts to low-bid the work to unauthorized / unqualified / politically connected companies.

So a city that used to have ten working tower ladders is down to two. The engines still work, so it'll get fire fighters to calls, but if anything taller than two stories catches fire, you better have a fire-proof parachute handy

It's not like Chicago is known for tall buildings or anything.

UPDATE: From a fire friend:

  • Engine 29 - 35th Lowe

    Engine 18 - 14th Blue Island

    Engine 11 - Foster Cumberland

    Engine 78 - Wrigley Field

    Engine 39 - 33rd Ashland

    Engine 129 - 81 Ashland

Those are ALS engines downgraded to BLS because the city thinks it cheaper to get fined than to rehire 6 paramedics for the day
Those Towers downgraded to a simple truck is alarming. Towers are needed in the event of a large fire. City won’t repair them.

    Tower 5 - Cullerton Damen

    Tower 10 - Division Larabee

    Tower 14 - Chicago Lamon

    Tower 16 - 67 Dorchester

    Tower 24 - 119 Peoria

    Tower 54 - 47 Komensky

Who is in charge of CFD now? Someone caught on Ring doorbell camera melting down over marital infidelities and then blackmailed to hire someone who ended up shooting another citizen?

Gee isn't it just super duper wonderful that we blew hundreds of millions of dollars on illegals and pledged to spend a whole lot more instead of maintaining lifesaving emergency equipment? I don't know about you but I'm over fucking joyed.

There is going to be a real tragedy someday and we are not prepared. Not only are we not prepared but criminal negligence is causing those remaining capabilities to degrade further each day. I'm sure Chicago is not alone in such malfeasance either.

Oh, by the way, not only is this information available to us but it is also available to the God knows how many terrorists we let waltz across the border and their sponsors in China and Iran.

CFD actually take pride in their work, training, upkeep of equipment and so on. Former partner is with CFD now and says most of the guys are “foamers”. No offense intended, but they live that foamer lifestyle hyping each other up each day and hoping to finally put out a fire one day. Partner only shows up to collect the check, 87 days a year. No fire foaming. He doesn’t have fond memories of CPD and says he’s never letting his guard down as long as he’s working for the city. As to the ladders, go to home depot 40 footers are about $450 a piece.

Someone posted a clip of that doorbell ring camera video on YouTube a while ago.
It was taken down within a day. Maybe they can get it back up there so the media can see it.

Back in the day, a competent reporter could file a proper FOIA and get hold of it.
I guess the fact that a Black Police Superintendent disgraced the police department and the city was enough. They are to woke to put the truth out about the Fire Commissioner.
If it was Trump they would have had it in a week.

I said it once I’ll say it again; Tower Ladders are huge complex machines designed for high reach fire fighting nothing more they should not be under any circumstance be following ambulances 20-30x a day all day every day. They aren’t designed for that but that’s what the city and geniuses running CFD think is acceptable. One way to cut down on them being so used and abused assisting ambulances is allow the EMT / Paramedic call takers at OEMC to stop booking runs for the 19yr old F who needs a AmaLaaan because her toe hurts. Let them filter out the crap and preserve resource for true emergencies but that’s a pipe dream.

Call your alderman, people (or folks). Demand answers.

So who signed off on the downgrading of the tower ladder trucks and the ALS engines? How long has this been going on? It’s rather frightening to think someone would do this. It’s better to be prepared than be underprepared. The City throws away a lot of money for other things which are usually political in nature. Money for emergency life saving should come first, whatever the cost.

We have 3 former firefighters who are presently aldermen, James Gardiner Ward 45, Anthony Napolitano Ward 41 and Nicholas Sposato Ward 38. What is their position on this and what can they do in the Council to ameliorate this alarming situation.

Quite a few of these towers would still be in service if not for completely preventable crashes. Such as multiple into railroad viaducts because drivers don't know the height clearance of their own truck. Another took out the overhead door at its own firehouse. CFD should consider another type of truck design if height clearance is a significant issue. Or assign drivers who can read those pesky yellow signs giving the clearance height at bridges and viaducts.

Fire numbers have been way down for the past 30 plus years.EMS calls have gone way up especially as boomers age.The need for more ambulances has never been met at 100 for the city of Chicago.Paramedics save lives every single day in between all of the abusive minor calls.Paramedic firefighters and single role paramedicsneither have saved lives of fellow firefighter EMTs.Tower ladders rarely go to elevated alarms. There has always been a battle over resources between EMS and Fire suppression. This is not grandpas fire dept. anymore.Tribal mentality of separating EMS from fire suppression as a team does not apply to modern day fire departments. Is the life of a fire victim being rescued by a firefighter off of a ladder more valuable then the life of a loved one suffering a medical emergency?Neither do the the roles of all fire service employees.Every role is valuable. The customers (taxpayers)deserve nothing less.Including the tax paying city employees on or off duty.We would all be better off keeping our EGO out of the way of common sence!

The Fire Dept is run by insurance underwriters they set the standards. And as far as I know there is none for Tower Ladders. our towers also count as trucks and can be used against the number of trucks on duty. There is a dance between how many and how far apart which affects response time. The city has a Fire Dept and insurance rates depend on how good it is.40 years ago it was proposed to stop building huge houses and return to many small single company houses. The clock stops when the first company arrives on the scene. But the profit margin on small houses for you know who was to small.

Tower ladders are used for more than "taller than two stories". Tower ladders have a wide area of coverage from their high vantage point in the air. Even some residential fires need a tower ladder. Definitely needed for many commercial building and warehouse fires.

The cost of a tower truck is about $2 million each, so 10 new trucks = $20 million.

Which is 40% of the $50 million slush fuck the Aldercritters have available to them. It's only February so that means they ought to have a bunch of that pot of slushies still available.

Time to crack open the checkbooks and make themseleves look good by "finding and allocating money to their communities for safety" (or whatever kind of DEI-speak is approved these days).

A little information for clarity purposes. For the record, spent over 15 years on TL39 at 51st and Leavitt, currently assigned to E129 at 81st and Ashland. 129 has been downgraded twice in the last week (2/10 and 2/16) because one shift does not have an assigned paramedic and needs a detailed medic every day. We expect this to continue intermittently for a few more weeks at least, or until the city goes back to rehiring medics, whichever comes first.

Tower Ladders are heavy aerial ladders with a manned basket mounting an aerial pipe that can flow up to 1000 gallons per minute if water supply is adequate, but more commonly 400-600. They are usually 8-10 tons heavier (35-40 tons) and 4-6 inches taller (just shy of 12') than a regular ladder truck. While user error does cause problems with viaduct clearance, most of the time towers are out of service because the fleet is old and many of the newer batch that are 4-6 years old are lemons. There are 10 front line towers and as of a couple years ago 6 old spare apparatus in usable condition. Supposedly the spares have been cannibalized to keep a couple running but all winter long Tower 16 and Tower 24 on the South Side have been downgraded to trucks more often than not. As of last week, Tower 16's primary rig was sitting in a truck repair lot at 75th and Central.

Most mechanical problems are not with the ladder but rather the suspension and drive train, which are usually the same as regular ladder trucks and have trouble dealing with the additional weight.

Rigs with non-functional ladders are NOT left in service, especially not tower ladders. Tower Ladders are exempt from certain types of runs such as civilian assist, well being checks, and RIT, but they do basic life support and manpower assist when necessary. The busiest TL did about 2700 runs last year while the busiest truck did 5200 and the busiest engine 6000.

Currently most of the reserve fleet is parked outside at the Shops, and it's getting harder and harder to tell the boneyard rigs apart from the spares, especially during the winter deep freeze. A handful of reserve rigs are parked inside, held aside in case of emergency recall, but those are all engines.

I stand on the hill that declares it’s an EMS Dept with Firefighting capabilities only now. It isn’t grandpas dept anymore like somebody pointed out.
In a perfect world every member would be fully cross trained as a paramedic but CFD is an old man dept with that old guard mentality. They still want to believe it’s their dad’s dept they still hope it could be their grandfather’s dept and have a hard time accepting that it isn’t anymore. So they have clauses and union agreements in place preventing them from having to.

I know the rumor and joke here is firemen are in their pajamas and get a solid 8hrs of sleep at night along with 2 naps and a couple movies maybe a few suds polished off on the sneak but that isn’t true not at all those days are long over nobody sleeps now it’s chasing and assisting ambulances around the clock non stop every day.

Sorry, dinosaurs. Shave off that mustache it isn’t the Chicago Fire Dept anymore it’s the Chicago Emergency Medical Department now with firefighting capabilities.

What's concerning about this is it reminded me of recent ff deaths and if this could possibly be a contributing factor. So sad either way as lives are at risk

2/17/2024 04:19:00 AM

Don’t think so. That has everything to do with the undeserving underqualified DEI chiefs they promote calling the shots out there and the fact that the old guard of the serious hardcore live it breath it eat it legacy firemen of yesteryear are all long gone. Back then those guys didn’t follow ambulances all day they drilled and practiced they studied they were in competition with each other to be the best. Their reputation on the job was their thing. It’s all they cared about. There are still some guys like that but they are fewer and farther in between. Now we have the younger tattooed selfie firemen who aren’t as dedicated to their craft. Not to mention there are less and less fires these days so they don’t get real practical practice and experience compared to the skilled talented firemen of the past who had 2-3 fires a shift. It is what it is.

Gee, if only we had a pool of investigative journalists who actually look into problems and report on them.... it's not like Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the country.

2/17/2024 01:01:00 PM

LONG GONE. "News" almost exclusively comes from a wire service, e.g. Reuters. That's why if you do a search on a lot of stories, you see the exact same story in numerous outlets.

I suppose you could call Savini and Goudy "investigative journalists," but they're more muckrakers than anything else.

Investigative journalism died a quiet death years ago.

The city’s department 2FM that maintains all facilities has posted a new position Director of Facilities-Migrants. $130.000 annually. This equates to 27 facilities to be serviced by city trades and engineers. Currently the position Director of Facilities for all other 600+ buildings the department maintains has not been filled for over a year! Guess where all the resources priority’s will be. The acting commissioner/acting director of facilities/acting director of security was in over his head when he was just boss of security guards! It takes weeks to get service for a leaking urinal or toilets out of service in my district.

As an outsider, this seems like a calculated mission to destroy the city during the August DNC. It will be full circle Utopia for Obama Democrats whereas the ‘68 convention Grant Park optics will be replaced by peer bedlam where the protestors reign supreme & the city burns while the balloons drop. Seemed like Western Ave in Englewood had a fire everywhere during the George Floyd free for all. With none of these big tower ladders operable in August, the factories/storefront will burn to the ground and the progressive Woke Democrats are clear the slate and accomplish their Great Resent….

City can shutdown every other fire house in the city and still have same response times, way too many fire houses.

Agree. In a perfect world we have 10 too many firehouses and 20 too many ambulances. That’s if you take away and completely eliminate “the community” as 95% of all EMS and Fire runs have to do with their dysfunctional selves.

'I stand on the hill that declares it’s an EMS Dept with Firefighting capabilities only now. It isn’t grandpas dept anymore like somebody pointed out.
In a perfect world every member would be fully cross trained as a paramedic but CFD is an old man dept with that old guard mentality.'

Tell me you're a suburban firefighter without telling me you're a suburban firefighter.

News flash: They have literally hundreds of medics that have crossed to the fire side, kept up their license for the minimum allowed time, then downgraded to EMT because the incentives are not worth the extra trouble and never have been. The city abuses medics so badly, you'd think they were cops. Mandatory OT, carrying your boots every day because you're double or tripled up, getting triple punished by the city, the region, and then the city again because of the region. I can't blame them for wanting to get out of a program that is run for the convenience of the house mice instead of the men and women.

Not at all. No. Don’t even know how to drive to the burbs.
What I say is true. It’s the Chicago EMS Dept now. That’s 97% of what CFD does and you know it. No self respecting person calls it the Chicago fire dept anymore. It’s an EMS dept with firefighting capabilities. Nothing more nothing less. 30 runs a day 28 are EMS the other two is an automatic alarm and the other is a well being check so don’t step to me just accept it.

Roughly 30 years ago a local 2 business agent negotiating a new contract insisted that a paramedic at every level should not make more than a firefighter. This mentality created a situation where a paramedic firefighter who has medical supervision on all EMS calls are only getting 2 per cent more then a firefighter EMT and less than a fire lieutenant,The disparity is obvious and has more to do with this is our fire department and you are the johnny come lately.Well,EMS is not going anywhere and until the value of paramedics is rewarded with fair pay grades, the turnover will continue.EMS also brings in more money into the coffers. The Chicago Fire Department is over 150 years of tradition unimpeded by progress.

Fun fact that is not common knowledge. There is no written exam to become a CFD Paramedic. You put your name on a list but you need a Type of CPAT Card, a paramedic license,CPR Card and D/L. Typically you see people who can't past the written in the suburbs or have disqualifying but controllable medical problems. They are full of piss and vinegar when they get hired but after about 1 year on the job they are ready to be in charge or get involved in some type of bullshit legal issue, which ever comes first.
