Beware the Dump
A comment provoking a lot of vitriol:
- Hey SCC, off topic but my wife just gave birth and I informed my Sgt that I will be taking my 12 weeks which was fought for for years. I was informed that if I take the 12 weeks I will be dumped and told 4 weeks is what I will take. I have been hearing other officers being told the same thing. I’m taking 12 weeks, if I get dumped what recourse do I/we have? Anyone know if we can sue the brass for a hostile work environment ? My wife and I thank you for any advice
If you have enough money, you can hire a lawyer to sue anyone for anything.
And if the FOP got the twelve weeks family leave approved, it's certainly a Contract violation. We know the supervisors got it, but did the rank-and-file?
In the meantime, unit assignment usually comes with conditions. And certain units (Mounted comes to mind) are specifically exempted from certain Contractual protections (no summer furloughs). And if you make waves....we're assuming it's not a biddable spot....you make your choices and you live with the consequences.

No sympathy for anyone outside patrol. Eunuchs require to be castrated if they desire easy life inside the castle serving as the queen’s guard. It’s a privileged position away from the peasants. The complaining poster chose to be a eunuch.
I wouldn’t want to work for someone who isn’t a supporter of me taking the full 12 weeks.
Take 12 weeks, get dumped, become a medical abuser.
Dude u deserve to be dumped. Man up. Go to work.
We are warriors not wussies.
The war needs you in the fight not on the couch.
America
1st and 15th is all that matters.
Take your 12 weeks. Your wife and child are more important than whatever your current assignment is. You will be thankful in a few years when she doesn't divorce you. She will remember later on whether you put your family first before this job.
And think about this. What kind of sergeant tells you to put the job before your family? Here's the answer: one who doesn't care about you, one who only cares about himself and his spot. if your sergeant said that to you, do you think he or she really cares about you or your family? Go work for a sergeant who tells you to put your family first.
You can love the job, but it never loves you back. Get your priorities straight.
You must be expendable if they said that. When you aren't expendable, you have nothing to worry about.
Fuck me, don't pay me.....
.
Are you kidding us?! You're in some sweet unit, want to take 12 weeks off and are crying about being dumped?! How 'bout this... suck it up and don't take the 12 weeks.
Wow. “My wife gave birth. I want my 12 weeks off”. Wtf has our department gone to?! What’re you gonna do big boy, hold her hand while she breast feeds the kid. This job is fucked.
“Beware the Dump”.
That’s the resounding warning uttered between the FLOP janitorial staff when they see me inhaling my third burrito on Mexican Mondays.
Everyone looks down on the beat officer, but part about bidding to a watch and just answering jobs, there ain’t shit anyone can say or do to you. Especially officers who bid to midnight and work a late car, hit the medical, call off, take your 12 weeks. What are they going to do to you, dump you to days?
Is this guy planning on breastfeeding? Go to work instead of using your kid to get a free extended vacation. Maybe find yourself a nice work from home job instead of dealing with your mean sergeant. Maybe you can be a nanny for the other cops in your neighborhood who used their 12 weeks already.
Who cares about getting dumped, man up, grow a pair of balls and do what's right with your family. Biggest regret after police career will be time lost with loved ones.
If on a team you gave up right for that it is a non bid spot
I do noththink you will be paid for all that time off either. I am not sure though. Please read the order involved with this
You gotta know who to give the handjob (work the bribe) to silly man....
You'll never be a merit ....

Is this actually a copper? Another spoiled millennial that actually believes that they work hard and deserve 12 weeks off and come back and go back to the cushy job they had! Any copper with any tenacity knows how things work you get to a unit you get to a great position rules change you want to come back and push that big car in the seventh district on midnights welcome back you don’t deserve to go back to where you were, that spot will be open for somebody else 12 weeks off for a man. What kind of bullshit is this? This is ridiculous concept from the start plus that’s 12 weeks if you work any kind of special employment, you will not be able to work anything you talk about a what’s the word to put it mildly Hey sissy, type of generation men used to be men and you’re going to cry on a public bulletin board. People read this people with actual jobs that have to work the ones that pay the salaries via taxes they don’t get any of this nonsense and you’re gonna openly open up about it that’s like the copper that comes on here and complains because somebody else gets to go home a little bit early now and then opens everything up for scrutiny and you wonder why the public does not like police a bunch of crybabies this new generation why don’t you go get a job working in an office ? Maybe go to the FOP cry on Johnny’s shoulder!
You probably didn't deserve that phone call position anyway.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
Why get 12 weeks off?
Didn't have such soft nonsense in the past. No wonder CPD is in a nosedive.
Holy fuck, this is what the department has come to?
Sounds like you have a a good spot if you’re afraid of a dump.
Good spots come at a price.
Sone units/teams need consistency and continuity, and sone whiny bitch who needs 12 weeks off because his wife gave birth should really rethink where his priorities are.
Starting a family? Cool. God bless.
But maybe your days of doing secret-squirrel tacticool police work are behind you.
You can’t have it both ways.
And in a management assignment, you have always had to tread lightly or fear the dump.
You thought there weren’t and drawbaxks to your sweet gig? It comes with strings attached.
Oh I get it, everyone nowadays wants all of the perks with none of the strings.
I’m thankful that I don’t work with people like this guy.
I would have no use for someone like this in ny close proximity. It says a lot about who he is. Time to go back to the watch kid, let someone who wants to do your job have it while you go play house.
There are consequences when you bid to a unit or have your chinaman get you there.
12 weeks?! Even your newborn baby will be like "when is this muthaf***er going to go back to work and leave us alone?"
Congrats on your child. You want to have your cake and eat it to. Just work the watch and enjoy time with your family. This is just a job, no more no less.
They have plenty of people to get blue cards.
Worried about getting dumped from a "spot" so somebody else can have a chance at your "spot"?

Good Lord!
1-3 sentence paragraphs please.
Ever here this " the worst unit is better then the best watch" ? Keep your spot , my kid had been born on my RDO had no time off. There are two the departments - people in units & people on the watch - stay in units. Lot of hate here, that's concerning, city did its job making us turn on each other more than ever.
Please tell me this is a joke. Do you need a hug?
The pussification of the CPD!!!
I scheduled my furloughs around the due date and came back to work afterwards. But my father raised a man. Your acting like you gave birth. What do you think men have done since the beginning of time. Hit the medical and complain about their boss. Men do not give birth. They provide for their family. Figure it out.

You mean the 7th and the 22nd? Checks still say the first though.......
Wait a minute, did the guy have the baby or his wife??? 12 weeks WTF? We get 364 days of medical right? Doesn't mean we use it all? Made Sergeant late in the game. These young kids are something else. Roll call... Sarge when are we going home? Useless and privileged. Good luck making it to retirement.
Wow a lot of people complaining about 12 weeks off. Shit I would have loved to have that, wife and kid stuck in the hospital and then one gets released while the other still in the hospital. But hey I had to burn all my comp time and then no pay status to help my family. Wow you guys are unbelievable.
What a puss boy 12 weeks ? They said take 4 weeks which is way to much anyway or get dumped ya that’s how it works in a cushy unit if you don’t like it go back to patrol otherwise put your baseball cap on backwards and be back in 4
Identify as Pete Bootyjudge
I push a beat car in the ghetto.
Thinking about getting my vasectomy reversed so I can get a 12 week furlo.
I just need a way to keep my wife from finding out about it
Drop an EEOC beef to start a paper trail. This dummy just threatened you because you want to take parental leave. If they dump you then sue. All these bosses talk a big game but when you push back they fold. You think that boss got to a cushy unit by having a backbone?
To all of you saying this is ridiculous, fuck you.
All you badass cops out there better not extend your furloughs, no one wants you at home any longer than needed. Better yet say fuck it to furloughs and just work, the dept will appreciate it and you will be rewarded, I promise. I see a handful more honorable mentions in your file.
Why fight for anything in our contract, be happy with what you have and just submit to the city. The city that backs you and doesn't cancel your days off (one or both) on short notice.
To all you company man out there, step up your game and answer all my calls while I enjoy doing fuck all, all day every day for 90 days plus my furloughs, which will be extended to the max.
So again, fuck you.
Really Bro?
After reading about the 12 weeks off for your wife giving birth, getting two weeks off to get her pregnant isn’t to far fetched after all.
If you're worried about the taxpayer and taking time off, maybe don't take furloughs. Just come in to work anyways and answer calls, because you are so awesome. And no more comp time for you.
Unit or not, it's in OUR contract.
If I had the power I would dump you if you didn't take the full 12 weeks, to the minute.
Look at all these boomer clowns. “You want 12 weeks off to help raise your new born, pussy, millennial, cry baby”. That is probably why most of you old timers are miserable, die after 3 pension checks or have children that don’t talk to you, because you put the job before your family. Being retired and still commenting on this blog speaks volume, you can’t leave it behind and enjoy life, you have to bitch and moan that we get paid more, have more benefits than you ever had. Also we don’t have to sling bodies into a wagon and bring em to the morgue, cry about that too.
Tell them you will do a few blue cards while on leave. You should be fine.
bitching on the blog about this?
what do you think this will accomplished?
Unreal
Did the baby come out of your penis? I guess you can come to work like the rest of us did. Women stay home with the baby. Men will provide food and shelter. Has been this way for thousands of years. I hope you do get dumped.
Don’t listen to these salty old timers. Take the 12 weeks. Every single city employee gets it, including CPS. Why would you not take 12 weeks that the city offers you time off. If you flip off Antifa at the dnc, you get stripped. If you chase Lil homicide down an alley and he turns with a gun in his hand and you shoot him, get stripped. If you get spit on in the face and use necessary force to prevent further battery and slam him, you get stripped. So the department will strip you any chance they get….. but now the department is offering you paid time off to be home with your family.. and you’re considering not taking it. Take it.
Don't listen to these clowns.
Inform your supervisor in writing (email OK) that you intend to take the full twelve weeks and your projected start date. HR will be required to qualify you for FMLA and provide you with Rights and Responsibilities as well a Designation Notice within 5 business days. They won't do it, the department has no idea how to handle these things. This will be FMLA interference violation #1, don't complain if you don't get these forms, just keep the email informing your supervisor of your intent to take time off.
Take your 12 weeks and ask to be returned to you original position, in writing again. When they refuse, this is FMLA interference violation #2.
Find an employment law attorney or contact the Department of Labor and file your compliants.
https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/contact/complaints
FMLA is mandated regardless of what city policy or collective bargaining says and is a right that can't be bargained away. There was a Legal Affairs attorney who resigned and is working for a firm out west who takes these types of cases, see if you can find him or ask around.
The department is going to fuck you for taken the time you have every right to take, fuck them right back.
Work 1st watch for your family and quit crying.
Quit cryin Ken, we need good men like you in 011
Were you the one that gave birth and pushed the child out your body? What a fucking joke! My wife had one of our children 18 years ago and I took 2 extra days off on top of my RDOs and returned back to work in a busy south side district. We made it work. I can’t believe this
Proabaly get dumped now because you aired your laundry out on scc. Im sure your sgt reads the blog like most coppers and will know its you who wrote it. so take the twelve weeks and hope you get dumped to a "decent" district
tax payers have to pay this how ridiculous- democrats bankrupting cities -
enjoy the 12 weeks off don't sweat a dump
I did 33 years in a beat car and enjoyed every minute of it
Back in the day my wife was getting induced on a particular day. I told my lieutenant a few days ahead and he said you got time on the books use it. Fair enough back then. No dump worries
4 weeks ? Seriously ,wasn't that long ago the boss made you come in the next day after child was born.
This has got to be fiction, noway is this real. If it is sir you need to resign get that job at a fast food pl;ace, are you actually going to raise a kid? What kind of father are you? Incredibly insane thinking! When/if you return maybe working in 003 on midnight with that brick on you, enjoy the ride! Many coppers are waiting for your spot!
Your not having the baby, go to work pussie!
You just got handed a lottery ticket. Hope they are actually empty headed enough to follow through on the threat.
Well...............If you are in a a unit, it is probably a non-bid unit. You knew the rules by taking that spot.
If you do not like the rules, leave. There are plenty more star numbers to fill your spot.
You should have planned your furlough around the birth of your child.....like everyone else did since time began.
You sound like an entitled bitch that is gonna stomp your feet until you get what you want.
Man Up!!!!
Wait we retime off if our wife’s give. Hell my boys are 20/18, I want my back day off then.
I don’t remember getting any days off, think I got whacked for time for the day or two I did take off
I push a beat car in the ghetto.
Thinking about getting my vasectomy reversed so I can get a 12 week furlo.
I just need a way to keep my wife from finding out about it

The reversed vasectomy or the pregnancy?
Unit or not, it's in OUR contract.
If I had the power I would dump you if you didn't take the full 12 weeks, to the minute.
3/13/2024 09:10:00 AM
Nothing in the contract guarantees anyone a non-bid position, and it never will. This isn't a FMLA or contract issue unless they actually prevent him from taking the 12 weeks off. As long as he still has the same job(police officer), the same pay, the same benefits, etc. when he finishes his stay at home daddy routine, there's no grounds for a grievance or a lawsuit. Being dumped from a unit or team or whatever special spot, because you weren't there for 12 weeks, is not a violation of anything in the contract. Non-bid spots typically have certain requirements, such as a certain level of activity. 12 weeks of no activity means they can dump him with no issues. I'm struggling to see the justification for a man taking 12 weeks off to care for a newborn, absent any major medical issues. I'm assuming, probably correctly, that this guy just wants 12 weeks off, since he's entitled to it. That's great and family first and fuck the city and department, but don't expect your special spot to wait for your vacation to be over. Take your 12 weeks and then try to earn your spot back. Then do it all again when you have another kid.
Look at all these boomer clowns. “You want 12 weeks off to help raise your new born, pussy, millennial, cry baby”. That is probably why most of you old timers are miserable, die after 3 pension checks or have children that don’t talk to you, because you put the job before your family. 3/13/2024 10:05:00 AM
We were the police so you could be a whiny snowflake who does nothing resembling police work while acting like a badass. You're welcome. Anything your contract guarantees you is because of the officers who came before you. You're welcome. You don't have to haul dead bodies in the wagon because we fought that fight for you. You're welcome. We scraped bodies into a bag and hauled them away without crying about it. We even made jokes about it. You now get to do a completely different job in a completely different environment, if you choose to actually do the job, which you don't have to now. We are not the same. You aren't better. You are where you are because we were what you think you are. You're welcome. Now go post on the blog while criticizing others for posting on the blog. Silly snowflakes can't see they are their own worst enemy.
Usually coppers on tact or in a unit got carried. I had to burn my own time and that was before the 15% rule and my seniority was way less back then.
12 weeks? You sh*t the kid out yourself?
This 12 weeks off is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

To the OP, take what you’re owed. Take those 12 weeks. Congratulations brother.
I thought the Mayor Conehead refused to give the CPD the maternity leave like the other city departments got? Didn’t he say the the police have unlimited medical? So just go on the medical like the Mayor said.
I'd want to be at home with my wife and new born as well but you should know that you can be dumped from a unit for anything. Don't whine about it, like some of these women with no time on the job who whine to the bosses in order to work days because they have kids.

If I remember we got three days one for sickness in family one for the mom being sick and the third was a duck day granted but grace of the supv.
I’m just jealous I’m too old to get mine. This department takes away every damn holiday, you deserve to take some time back. For all you fat ugly fucks that nobody wants to fuck and spawn with…. Quit hating…. Take your dog out for a pup cup and then buy a jar of peanut butter.
I had to take my lunch and string both personals together to catch my kid being born

The amount of blowhard handjobs in this comment section is concerning. Criticizing someone for taking 12 weeks to spend with his family? You morons are the same ones who go to work every day, cry because you "worked" your whole career and dislike all the people with at least half a functioning brain that realize this job ain't your life. You are the same morons who have failed marriages, custody battles, dragged out expensive divorce cases, ect. And meanwhile the person who wasn't a cuck for this job made the same exact amount you did, enjoyed his time off, and actually developed strong relationships with their children. I got my 12 weeks coming up soon. I'm going to enjoy the fuck out of them, experience all the great times with my baby that only happen once, and not miss a damn thing she does. Have fun answering the calls I won't be answering.

Just keep paying into the pension rookie. Ten years into retirement after thirty-five on the job and still healthy as a horse. Plan on living another twenty and will need your contributions. Never minded carrying bodies to the morgue. I did my entire career in Englewood so the people that went to the morgue usually deserved to be there.

BNSF railroad was fined for discouraging emplyees from using flsa time. It was considered retaliation under that federal law. Doesn't the city prohibitedretaliation? Also, BNSF had to remove the use of FLSA used time from its computer program productivity program.

You should have probably checked before you posted nonsense about the feds reimbursement. It’s none paid
Johnson might have implimented a plan but I doubt it because of our medical policy we weren’t included initially
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible employees up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave a year, and requires group health benefits to be maintained during the leave as if employees continued to work instead of taking leave. Employees are also entitled to return to their same or an equivalent job at the end of their FMLA leave.
What does your wife's boyfriend have to say about this?
3/14/2024 03:23:00 PM
He's trying to get his 12 weeks off too, but they're saying some cop already got his name on the birth certificate.
Are you a male? Do you have a admin spot? Caps spot? DCO? Tac or some spot in a unit that thousands of other officers would kill to get and are sitting on a list to get? If any of your answers are yes, then I agree, I would dump you also if I was a boss. Have a great spot and still need to get some more scamming in. Sorry, but the work needs to go on and while you go away for 12 weeks other people now need to pick up your slack and do your job in your nice spot. If you are management on 2nd watch I would also make sure you didn’t get management the following year. Sorry, it all sounds harsh but too many scammers on this job. My wife and I have had four kids while I’ve been on this job. Each time I’ve taken two weeks of my own time and it was time to get back. The break was nice but it also got us into the routine quicker with the baby incorporating work right away. Enjoy the baby and let the mom be the mom and you go to work like the man.. that’s how it’s supposed to go. Or will u need to stay home and pump milk??? No, that’s the wife’s job, you help out for two weeks and she’s able to walk and lift normal again, (yes two weeks is plenty, she’s done 4 C-sections) and been fine after two weeks. If you have a spot, four weeks is a gift. If you wanna push it, good luck. What recourse do you have???? Grow up and be a man and support your family by working hard. how about that recourse.
Those first 12 weeks sure are magical. Think of all the memories you'll make with your new baby. The baby won't remember a second of it, and all of it will be spent cleaning up shit and puke. Such wonderful times!

Drop an EEOC beef to start a paper trail. This dummy just threatened you because you want to take parental leave. If they dump you then sue. All these bosses talk a big game but when you push back they fold. You think that boss got to a cushy unit by having a backbone?
Lol. Never happen Units aren't bid spots so you can be moved without cause. You're not harmed because it's not a pay cut. This beef goes nowhere. It's all about manpower needs to the city.
Now get back to answering those domestics.
What about that female detective that won her lawsuit after she got dumped from 2nd watch?
I hope all these comments are trolls. 12 weeks parental leave is the right kind of progress.

Those first 12 weeks sure are magical. Think of all the memories you'll make with your new baby. The baby won't remember a second of it, and all of it will be spent cleaning up shit and puke. Such wonderful times!

Gotta be a CPS alum right here. You do realize parental leave is authorized to be taken any time up to a year after the birth right? So if we use our thinking caps, 12 weeks is about 3 months which means you can spend roughly months 9-12 (or any earlier months) with your baby. You know, if you actually care about developing a relationship with the human being you brought into the world. There's many milestones a baby can achieve in it's first year. Those milestones are even easier to achieve with an interactive father to help guide them. You either don't have any children (which there's nothing wrong with and not meant to be insulting) or you had zero interest in raising a child. Because any father who cared would jump to be able to spend 3 months at home with their baby and still have all the bills paid.
No pool, but I am a regular at a bathhouse with a cute towel boy.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!

People have been raising children and developing deeply loving relationships with those children without taking 12 weeks off from work to do so. You can have some great memories in that first year, especially with a first child. You can probably even experience some life-changing events. You don't need 12 weeks off to do that though. I'm not saying every single person who has a child shouldn't take those 12 weeks every time. If you're entitled to it, take it and enjoy. Just don't come on here whining that you got dumped from your special spot because you chose to be gone for 12 weeks. And don't act like those 12 weeks, wherever they occur within that first year of life, are somehow more important than the 17 or so years after, where you will truly develop that lasting and meaningful relationship with your child. I'd argue that people should be entitled to take those 12 weeks at any time during the first 18 years of their child's life. I doubt many would choose the first year if given that option. That was my point. Your position is that a father who doesn't take 12 weeks off during that first year is not an interactive father, has no interest in raising a child, and won't be able to form a relationship with their child? I'd like to see the data that supports that opinion. Your assumptions and condescension were cute though. Also, where did you receive your education? I did not attend CPS, but I was taught that "it's" is a contraction of "it is." I think you meant to use "its," which is possessive. I suspect they even teach that at CPS.
