Refusing Endorsements
The Democratic candidates for Cook County state’s attorney distanced themselves Friday from the controversial head of the Chicago police union after he released a video making favorable comments about them both.
John Catanzara, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, said his remarks were not meant as an official union endorsement but an encouragement for rank-and-file police officers to not vote Republican.
“The Cook County state’s attorney’s race will be decided in the Democratic primary,” Catanzara says...
He isn't wrong, but neither candidate wants the FOP nod, and....:
- Both Burke and Harris released statements Friday saying they had not sought the endorsement of the FOP or its controversial president — and seeking to tie the other to the union.
They're not campaigning against Crimesha and her record of dead and maimed minority victims, but that the support of the police union - which at its most basic stands for law and order - is a bad thing.

Anything John Catanzara does or try to do is to benefit John Catanzara, simple as that. There is an ulterior motive behind just about every single decision he makes or compels the FOP Board to make. Him trying to pull this stunt is because he’s already made a backroom deal or is scheming trying to parlay it into something that helps him. Can you say… health insurance paid for by the membership til he’s Medicare eligible?? Term in office now 4 years from 3? Able to collect his pension as a retiree AND the full salary as President? His FOP credit cards limit raised? Etc. Etc. Why do you think he’s doing everything in his power to keep people from viewing financial records and tax returns??? Burke and Harris both know John Catanzara is toxic and want nothing to do with him or FOP. They don’t want their fingerprints anywhere near him or the FOP when the indictments come down.
I’m gonna play devils advocate here, maybe it has less to do with them liking crime and more to do with the fact that JCat said that all Muslims deserve a bullet. Should either candidate embrace him, they’d immediately be faced with claims from the other side that they openly endorse someone who said some dumb shit… It doesn’t matter if he even meant it or not, they’re distancing themselves from someone who made public statements that would make them look bad.
Burke doesn't represent a return to law and order in this city. The business community is dreaming. She's just the least bad option for a city that has no future.

Catanzara has picked Mike Cosentino to be PAC coordinator and between them they know zero about politics . Neither candidate qualifies in my opinion. Retiring this spring and our family is leaving the city and county. For the first time ever non of us are voting this election except for President. We decided we would rather not cast a vote instead of voting for the lesser of 2 evils or someone not even desirable. Good luck to you Chicago and Cook county you created a disaster for a lifetime now live with it. Oh and by the way perhaps some day the officers of CPD will realize they need to get involved in politics because as you see the lack of involvement has been the results you are living in....take a hint from the teachers union and unify.

Funny this popped up. If Arlington Heights lets the Bear's Stadium go they are some very stupid people. I know that the stadium would bring lots of traffic and headaches but the money would pour in. It just proves, once again, what I have been saying for years: The Office of Cook County States Attorney is not our friend. It was really drive home to me many years ago when I was sitting in a federal courtroom on Dearborn St and an ASA sat up in that witness box and disavowed everything that was told to us detectives by the office as we were sitting at the respondent table. They completely distanced themselves from the investigation stating that they do not investigate cases, nor do they tell detectives what to investigate. Denied knowing anything about the office "CIing" any cases. Said they either approve or reject approval of cases, this was a homicide, and that's it. Remember, be very careful what you say to them, they will hurt you in a heartbeat.

Dumped from what? If you're in a position that is activity based, you don't get to disappear for 12 weeks and keep that spot. Pick family time or jeans police, because you can't have both. All they have to do is show that your activity is at zero for 12 weeks and they're covered. Even without using a lack of activity, there's plenty of reasons they could use to dump you from a team. You're not entitled to a non-bid position if you're not working. Also make sure you don't work any secondary employment while on leave.

They will also distance themselves from the police as they have in the recent past. I'm not necessarily sure that J-Cat is responsible for that as much as the still pervasive defund the police movement.

Voting Republican in Chicago is like voting for your ugly wife in a beauty pageant. Everyone knows she can't win, but it makes her feel better. Republicans can't win in Chicago. It's a wasted vote. Voting strategy for Republican voters in Chicago is to pick the least terrible Democrat, since one of them is going to win. Voting for a Republican or someone who didn't announce that they're pro-choice, doesn't do anything but take a potential vote away from that lesser of two evils. Put your political and religious beliefs aside, and pick whichever worthless shitbag will do less harm. It's the only play that makes any sense.
Hey SCC, off topic but my wife just gave birth and I informed my Sgt that I will be taking my 12 weeks which was fought for for years. I was informed that if I take the 12 weeks I will be dumped and told 4 weeks is what I will take. I have been hearing other officers being told the same thing. I’m taking 12 weeks, if I get dumped what recourse do I/we have? Anyone know if we can sue the brass for a hostile work environment ? My wife and I thank you for any advice.
Such a statement alone might be a violation if the law. Guys at the railroads won an flsa lawsuit for discussing using protected time off and a supervisor told them they would get poor performance evaluations. It was essentially discrimination. I'll dig up the case, it might not apply or Chicago and Cook County ordiance might be stronger.
rehire program is going to be nuked. it's been a failure in almost every measurable metric. many of them have gotten rehired, only to come back and stay a few weeks/months and then resign... again. people who have applied to be rehired have copa and Bia cases when they left and aren't coming back. domestic beefs, issues with the agencies they left to, you name it.

You all know that you can stop the automatic union dues deduction fro your paycheck and still be covered by union contract. Why are you allowing this tool to steal your money right under your noses. Why do you suppose he is trying to keep the union financial books closer to union members? Just asking the question you all should asking. Looking at the comments about a Democratic or Republican ballot just shows that many people are uninformed about how a PRIMARY election works. I vote for Republican candidates in the General Election but I always take a Democratic ballot in the primary. I vote for candidates that have a lesser chance of beating a Republican candidate in the General election. If there is no solid Republican candidate for a specific office then I try to vote against the "endorsed" candidate just so they don't win by such a wide margin that they think they are invincible. In the county clerk's race I didn't vote for Martinez for the one fact that she hired Tony Escamarit as her "chief investigator." If she is so stupid that she hired that incompetent asshole then obviously she isn't that smart and I don't want her in office.

There are no conservative business owners.
There are no liberal business owners.
There are no business owners of any kind of -ism.
Business owners, by definition, are in business to gain.
To gain requires that costs do not exceed gains.
Thus, any business owner who does business anywhere defines location based upon this essence principle of business.
No matter what the costs of doing business, if those costs do not exceed gains, business will be done.
Wherever, whatever, however, and whenever.
The political -isms are only a factor in this essence of business principles. The cause and effect of this factor being determinative of business remaining or business removing itself.
Even in big shitty city, money, from whatever source, spends equally true.
Costs/expenses vs income/sales = gain or loss = stay or leave.
