Allegedly commander courts got wind of it and wasn’t too happy. The suggestion from the 3rd watch Lt has since been rescinded…
No other watch in 007 said it. It’s just this guy. I think the commander already called him out on it. And nobody listened to it anyways.

They don’t need to abolish traffic stops for minor reasons, they need to stop obsessing over traffic stop numbers. That’s where the problems lie. You have to constantly beat last weeks, months, years numbers otherwise you’re in the red. In the red gets noticed and gets called out at compstat etc. You have to be in the green. Increasing every measurable unit of time. That’s how we end up stopping grandma for not using her turning signal. Officers are out there purely stopping people to get numbers for their commanders. That HAS to stop.
Now maybe I’ll get a little Police presence where my property taxes are $14k a year!

Do the officers in 007 realize you are getting numbers for Commander Lew Courts. A double merit promotee with 14 years on. One of Carter s fake frat boys and dumb as they come.
I’ve seen very few comments on why this traffic stop was really made. A known criminal is driving down the road in a car with blacked out windows while wearing a mask. The cops can’t stop him for wearing a mask, but they can because he is in violation of the vehicle code for no seat belt.
Gee, where is this guy going? We know one the leading cause of death (CDC) for his demographic is auto accidents and we know the leading cause, the number one, is homicide. These cops stopped him because they thought he was on his way to kill another member of his cohort. Probably a pretty good guess. These cops should be regarded as examples of exactly we want our cops to do. The stop was lawful and maybe stopped a shooting. The criminal got killed because instead of shooting another black male he decided to shoot a copper.
Can we changed the narrative a bit? Same cops and out come, but instead of a black man child, we have a white guy from downstate wearing a mask but also a MAGA hat with a gun. Would the cops be hero’s or zeros.
These are good cops, like the vast majority of the CPD. Chicago doesn’t deserve you.
When I was a mere lad a very old detective told me this: big case, big 💩, little case, little 💩, no case, no 💩. Maybe it was better advice than I thought at the time.
We have all seen at roll call, the watch commander take roll cal, and then read from the CO book, and then begin reading from a crib sheet.
Of course, none of that stuff is written down...we ALL know that!

Me and two other officers are going to continue to do excellent activity. Because our goal is to make it to a tactical unit and then a city wide unit. Being in a unit means we don't work eight hour days. More like 4-6 hours per day. Lots of overtime. I know some cops will say don't do anything for this city. Well that's your mentality and you do what you want. I'll do what I want.
In the current environment I can't say I disagree with him. I'll add the following: No lights and sirens to property crimes. It's just paper. If you're going lights and sirens treat every intersection like it's a stop sigh and stay under 45-50mph... Unless officer needs help. Be very very very selective on car chases and footchases... murder, CSA, kidnapping... 95% yes. Domestic, agg bat, armed robbery... depends but leaning towards No. Dope, theft, assault... a hard never. Guns... leaning towards No. Going home, staying out of the media, COPA and federal court... 100% a hard YES.
No one in the entire city should be doing a traffic stop at all…PERIOD

I don't believe it. I have worked for DJ for years before retiring and that's just not his personality. I'm sure it was more like be extra careful on traffic stops, as has been proven time and again they can be extremely dangerous. And this somehow how got turned around into don't do traffic stops. And by the way, there are too many times to count when I have seen him step in and bail Officers out of trouble and save their butts. There are a lot of Officers out there that have no idea they were save from a world of BS by DJ stepping in. Just saying.

Man this sure has morphed into fake news. Nobody said to NOT do minor traffic violations anymore. The supt said he does not want traffic stops for the sake of doing stops and to just get blue cards. I agree with this. However nobody ever said to not stop a car if you see minor traffic violations.. he just doesn’t want anyone pressured into doing it because of traffic missions etc..

It's as if at least some CPD bosses have NO idea Illinois banned ticket quotas a few years ago..."A municipality may not require a police officer to issue a specific number of citations within a designated period of time." and "A municipality may not, for purposes of evaluating a police officer's job performance, compare the number of citations issued by the police officer to the number of citations issued by any other police officer who has similar job duties." See 65 ILCS 5/11-1-12
HOWEVER, the brass CAN count the number of traffic stops or other "contact measures", including but not limited to arrests, written warnings, and crime prevention measures.

You are a joke. Say what you will about the DC, but coward he is not. I’ve never seen him dodge a call or fail to back people up. He was usually first on scene by himself.

Well why don’t they tell the commanders that and the commanders communicate that to the troops. Ours have not gotten the message and are still doing blue cards to keep the traffic numbers up so the commander looks good at compstat. That’s what it all comes down to. Stop tracking stops and using them as a measure at compstat of weather Cmdr’s and officers are doing their jobs and over night you’ll see all these stupid stops of grandma not using her turn signal, one head light out etc stop immediately. Prob the best thing they could ever do to repair the relationship with the community.
Watch personnel should be left to handling the jobs. That’s it. That’s all that should be expected of them. Let the tact guys worry about keeping the numbers up for the commanders. Leave the watch people alone. Somehow over the years the watch has been pushed more and more to do all kinds of missions and get traffic stop numbers and all kinds of silly shit. There’s just not enough manpower anymore for all that. They go job to job and then you give them mission and still want them to come in with a bunch of traffic stops. Tired of doing more with less.

Back in the day, a traffic stop was an early version of restorative justice. The officer and violator would discuss the issue and reach a mutually satisfying arrangement.
Watch personnel should be left to handling the jobs. That’s it. That’s all that should be expected of them.

I have been an advocate of doing less for many years saying "Don't do anything" "just go to your calls"...New kids on this job call me a "dog" and say that I'm not the "real police"

I'll bite. The Traffic Stop Statistical Study card is a 20ish year old card that was created to prove that Chicago police were racist in their choice of traffic stop subjects. It was supposed to be a one year study, I believe. When it failed to show any racial bias in traffic stops, they decided to continue the "study" indefinitely, so that the media and other pushers of the systemic racism nonsense could try to use it as proof of the thing it disproves. All it actually proves is that black and brown people commit more traffic violations, and that police are more likely to stop the people who drive in the area where the police are stopping people. It also showed that black and brown people are constantly pulled over and not given any citations for multiple traffic offenses, by the supposedly racist police. It also shows that police are disproportionately stationed in black and brown areas, which is a direct result of the residents of those areas being more likely to break the law, and do so violently.
yeah, just ticket victims of crimes committed by the black youths.

DJ is a better boss than 90%of over promoted exempts .
It has become obvious that the progressives in this state, both black and white, do not want the police to stop black people for traffic violations that they ( progressives) consider minor. They believe that the police are using these stops as a pretext to harass black people ( in some cases yes),. Added is the fact citations are not being handed out. They ignore the facts and variables in this issue. So, write more tickets for starters. But, if the progressives do not want some laws enforced, then have the balls to go to Springfield and have those laws taken off of the books.
I can’t wait to hurt my back this summer.
