The officers involved returned fire and are lucky to be alive. At least one of the officers may end up on permanent disability after being shot by the offender.

A friend of mine who is a retired naval officer recommended I read the book "The Attack" by Kurt Schlichter. An excellent book. It has now made me view things a lot differently.
It is a fictional story about a US domestic attack on a national scale similar to the Mumbai 2008 terrorist massacre and what might happen because of the thousands of illegal military age men Biden has allowed to cross the border in the past three years and disappeared into the United States. They "disappeared" to join sleeper cells and wait for instructions, guns and to manufacture IED's.
These people are not here to assimilate or work. They hate the United States and are here for only one reason, to kill as many people as they can.
The book points out that the first line of domestic defense are the police, but they would be fighting with pistols vs automatic weapons. It was the Israeli police who contained the terrorists in the October 7, 2023 attacks until the Israeli Army could mobilize.
I recently returned from a business trip to Switzerland. It was interesting to see. On the trains and in the rail stations, many Swiss police officers carry two pistols, typically H&K VP9's and all of the officers I saw additionally carried an MP5 or a 416 submachine gun across their armoured vest on their chests. There were always two officers together.
They were loaded for bear. And none of the Swiss citizens on the trains I observed, objected to them being armed in this manner.

Another fair-weather officer shows his true colors. A knife will kill or permanently maim you just as easily as a bullet will...and your soft body armor won't stop a knife blade. It's incredible how many of our coworkers and supervisors threw Van Dyke under the bus when he was following the CPD Use of Force at that time. A crazy guy wandering around with a knife, stabbing at vehicles and ignoring the police, presenting a clear deadly threat to anyone in his vicinity, regardless of which particular direction he was heading at the time he was shot, should absolutely be shot dead by the police every single time. The magic number is 40 then? You don't know how many shots it takes to end the threat until you've ended the threat. You can't just pick a number and say it's a bad shoot if it's over that number. You also can't say 40 is too many if it's several officers firing at once. What if you fire 40 times and get 0 hits? Is the threat magically ended because you used the magic number of rounds already? What if dude gets hit 10 times and still keeps popping off rounds in your direction? You already fired 40 so you better stop and hope for the best. I'm sure you'd hit the target with every shot while taking fire, but most won't. I'm sure you'd just stop shooting at someone who was shooting at you, just because it sounded like 40 rounds had been fired. If the threat is over, how did you determine that? Did he drop the gun? Did he stop moving? Is he unable and unwilling to pick the gun up and keep shooting? Is he listening to commands now? Is his head exploded all over the windshield? If he's not unarmed and complying 100% with the officers, the threat is not over. They didn't arm us with AR15s with multiple 30 round mags because 40 shots is the max you can fire. We don't carry handguns with multiple magazines because we're supposed to use the first few rounds and then hope it's over. Those nice Glocks with extended mags that the bad guys carry sure don't stop shooting after a few rounds. At the end of the day, if you don't shoot at the police, you don't need to worry how many times they'll shoot back. How's your aim while taking fire from your target? If you're being shot at, you shoot back, not only to hit the target, but to keep that target from being able to get clean shots on you. If that takes 50 rounds into everything around the target and one in his head, that's a win. I agree CPD needs more range time, but judging accuracy while taking fire is just idiotic.
