Chronic Absenteeism

Here's a place for all those people demanding "accountability" to look .... just kidding! It's still the schools:

  • Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently traveled to Springfield with a big wish list of stuff he wants from state lawmakers. Among them, $1 billion in extra funding for Chicago Public Schools.

We have a host of reasons why his demand should be categorically rejected. Among them, CPS already spends $29,000 per student, Chicago teachers are already among the nation’s highest paid in big cities and the Chicago Teachers Union refuses to close the many empty, failing schools across the district. Not to mention that both CPS and CTU refuse to hold themselves accountable to students. Just 20% of minority CPS children can read at grade level and in math it’s even worse.

Now add to that the growing rate of teachers simply not showing up to school. The U.S. Department of Education’s definition of chronic teacher absenteeism is 10 or more absences in a school year.

In CPS, the share of teachers who are chronically absent has jumped to 43% from 28% just seven years ago. The jump can’t be blamed on the pandemic, as the rate of absenteeism was rising (from 28% to 36%) even before covid hit.

They're not teaching, kids can't read nor do math, the rate of sex offenders almost matches the Catholic Church, and the massive property tax hike they'll need to cover raises will continue to drive out the middle class.

They can't be trusted with the billions they're already stealing, so why give them more?

I guess when you organize and raise money and you have a lot of members who go out to vote, you can do as you please.

At this point "public schools" are little more than a criminal enterprise which steals as much as it can from the taxpayers, provides kickbacks to politicians for favorable legislation, and enriches their people. Now it's even got no show and no work jobs for its members.

I bet what's left of the mob is kicking itself for not getting in on the public employee racket decades ago.

If I had to wake up every day knowing that, over the next 24 hours, I'd be paying in another $21 to the Chicago Public Schools via my property taxes, I don't know how I'd cope.

Think about that. Paying 10k in taxes? The schools' cut is about five gallons of gas EVERY. MISERABLE. DAY.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't put up with that. Not for the privilege of my kids being taught nothing but racism and gender confusion.

So I put it to you, all you who pay these stupid amounts of money: what will it take for you to stop? Or just leave?

BTW, CPS is FAR worse than any Catholic org could ever be. They are just better protected.

Speaking of funding, has anyone else heard of Chicago Public School transportation checks? Apparently someone at CPS was stealing checks from non-English speaking parents. Reports were made at the station. What is more puzzling is that the students both resided just blocks from the school they attended. Is this another way of buying democrat votes through taxpayer transfer payments?

Here's the lowdown on Chronic Absenteeism.

It all started in 2015.

Rahm had just closed 50 schools

Teachers hired after 2015 no longer were getting 7% of their own 9% pension contribution paid for by CPS.

And, after the banked sick day fiasco was uncovered in 2015 when teachers were allowed to bank up to 325 sick days. These sick days were paid out at retirement for what each teacher was earning a day when they retired (for a one-time sick day payout) not what each day banked was worth in the year they were saved.

After 2015, teachers could only bank 40 sick days for time and the other sick days if not used would be lost. So CPS teachers starting taking more days òff

Add to these 10 sick days a year to 3 professional business days given each teacher a year and BOOM, chronic Absenteeism.

Oddly, enough, Taft HS is one of the worst schools for chronic teacher Absenteeism.

CPS teacher Chronic Absenteeism was actually 88% in 2020 and 84% in 2021, both during COVID. Teachers took more days off during distance learning then they had been taking off during in-person classes. Just goes to show you how illiterate teachers are as they can't teach online classes.

Lake View HS had four PE teachers earning $100K or near it during COVID. They allowed their students to self report daily physical activity. One PE teacher William Loomos had the stones to post two of his students making a snowman outside Wrigley Field as one of their daily activities. Loomos has a Masters and couldn't figure out how to teach classes online and was making $600/day.

As the teachers evaluate the students as to the effectiveness of the cps indoctrinations, the students evaluate the teachers, as to just how much hi jinkings they, the students, can get away with.

Some students have an instinctive sense of the innate contradictions spewed out of the teachers' pie holes.

Some students avail themselves of the opportunities presented by said contradictions to see the teachers as those seen in the Peanuts cartoons.

The dumber the student, the less that student appreciates the benefits of not calling the attention of the teachers to themselves.

To look to the teachers as exemplary examples of admiration, to be heeded in all things, is a rare trait in students, as many to most students are not that stupid.

The social learnings' opportunities are abundant.

Mostly those that provide the budding youngsters the realities of adult life.

As in, just how stupid, absurd, assinine, and full of their own shit some adults are prone to be.

So, cps/ctu does contribute this to our social futures.

Examples of how to not be have equal to greater value than examples of how to be.

Only the students who are naturally inclined to being assholes will see these examples as affirmations of their fitting in to the social structures defined by assholes.

"The city" = US, taxpayers.

And there would never be any 'savings' allowed.

Better to dream that that $29,000 per be provided as voucher to be used only as tutition, at a cps facility or a non cps facility, first come, first enrolled, with vetting standards applied for violent activities history.

This would provide true free market competitive motivations for all.

To be resoundingly rejected by the ctu incontenent incompetents.

In all fairness, as a former urban teacher in Cleveland, OH, SOME of those absences may be related to assaults on teachers by students, and healing time required.
One year, the principal tried to give me a poor evaluation on attendance, for having 17 days of absences. Of those, 3 were related to asthma set off by fires set in the school (generally in the bathrooms), one was due to being caught in the middle of an erupting school fight, and being flung into a cafeteria table and injuring my back (perhaps inadvertent - the student did apologize, saying he didn't realize he'd done it - and, he had charged the other student like a raging bull), and having an apple hurled at me, bruising my face quite badly. That time, I lost 2 weeks of school to recover.
He did remove the attendance remarks from my evaluation. However, those absences weren't correctly coded to make it clear that they were not my fault, but rather workers comp type of injuries.
Later, I had trouble getting workers comp for a rather serious injury to my wrist, which tore a tendon and required several months of wearing a cast and being unable to drive.
My experiences were not unusual - schools like to downplay the actual violence in the schools, and will sometimes trash injury reports, refuse to call police for felony assault, and otherwise work to bury the unpleasant news.
