This Means Something....

But what? We just can't figure it out:

  • Last year set records for the number of overtime hours worked by Chicago Police officers – and that trend is continuing this year, with the summer just getting started.

There are also additional needs this year with months of massive events on the schedule, notably including the Democratic National Convention in August.

Between last year's 52nd annual Pride Parade, the NASCAR Cup Series race downtown, the four-day Lollapalooza Music Festival, and a year's worth of other commitments for Chicago Police, officers clocked in 4,151,294 hours of overtime in 2023, according to a CBS News Data Team analysis.

This cost taxpayers nearly $300 million.

Could it possibly....just possibly....be that manpower shortage we've been warning about for how many years which has now reached crisis levels as officers of all ranks from the massive 1993-1998 hiring wave max out their pensions and hit the age of 55 for insurance purposes?

UPDATE: Post corrected for years - that was all the Clinton money being directed to the big cities.

Hope they say goodbye before leaving.

But so many are in a rush to hit the road we don't have time to say goodbye to them all.

Thanks for your service, enjoy the memories.

P.s. Move on, don't look back.

Not that I want to see fewer police officers, I am always for the more the better.

But from a logical standpoint if the criminals went to jail/prison and stayed to serve their sentences you would need fewer people in law enforcement, plus less victims who end up dead or maimed.

Overtime should really be restricted to street duties, not gossiping and doing makeup at the desk. But as with everything in this department just shrug your shoulders and mind your own business. The city is crying wolf. We all know with large city events like DNC, the feds pay the bill for all city services, same with Lalo. Hell they (Lalo) pay to replace the grass every year. Think about all the money the city is saving with the low manpower, they budget for 12thousand officers but we haven't seen those numbers in years. That's 12 thousand at max pay scale, along with insurance, and all other perks. So it's all BS. When you are short staffed what do you think is going to happen, you half to pay OT!

I would never want to push a beat car again, 19 years is enough for me. These no good bosses demand same results with LESS manpower. Patrol Officers are squeezed to the maximum and burdened with triple the amount of the work then ever before. Get put of patrol asap!

Because pension check, commander’s pay, magazine editor salary, soon to be retired pension board member with a monthly expense account j kitty doesn’t give a shit about you minions. His insurance is paid for by us until he is 65, he has a vehicle paid for by us, including gas. His cell phone is paid for by us. Didn’t he say at a meeting if you are worried about a few hundred in your pension check you should have planned your finances better? 300K a year and I wouldn’t worry about a few hundred a month either. It’s kind ironic to say that when your home was foreclosed on and your boat repossessed. J Kitty now living large on YOUR dues. Why did you think he’s keeping the books locked up and the minutes hidden? His board is rewarded financially for rubber stamping his spending. Half days, vacation days, days off for bad weather, golf outings everyone is soooooooooooo busy they cannot have an open door policy. First term they worked pretty hard, this term they are playing hard. Go look at the spending. Ask why they don’t want to file grievances, most earning captain’s pay for 3-4 callouts a month. Your union officers should not be making 1 million dollars in salary and 500K in additional costs while you work like a dog risking your life daily. WE DON’T EVEN HAVE A CONTRACT. Let’s go kitty, change out of your ugly ass golf pants, put down the cigar and finish the contract !!!!!!

Maybe if the city shut the Pride Parade Down after the last float passes the ending point there wouldn’t be a need for excessive OT. Last year there were coppers who started at 0600 hours and did not get released until 0145 hours the following day. Yes, you’re reading that correctly, coppers were forced to work their RDO (Regular Day Off) and held hostage for 11 extra hours. You ask why… because this city and department are filled with pussys that refuse to say no and refuse to make a logical decision to shut that shit show down. If you tell the organizers of that parade that it’s over at this point then you don’t need to keep coppers around at time and half standing around doing nothing.

I remember sometime in the mid 2000's the city was "outraged" at the amount of overtime the police were making, and "cracked" down a couple times. The local media ran the stories, and made it sound like it was a crime to make OT in CPD.

Any and all yellow slips had to be approved by some person at the district level under the watchful eye of the unit commander. All court notifications had to be pre-approved. The ASA's office would be contacted to make sure the officer's appearance was necessary. Special employment suffered. Extended tours were handed off to the next watch. Appearance notifications for ANOV court, and Impound court were gone by then as well. The crunch even hit the Detective Division and their OT got 86'd as well. Extension of tours was frowned upon, and in leiu of a yellow slip and early duck was promised at a later date. Ongoing investigations were handed off at the end of a tour ala "O.J." style and chaos ensued.

It was a debacle then, and now I see that OT has now more than doubled. I'm glad that I am gone. The simple fact is, that CPD manpower is completely mismanaged. They tighten budgetary constraints in knee jerk reaction to news media stories, and public opinion in general. I'm sure that after the convention, there will be another crackdown on OT. It will only be superficial because with the manpower these days they live and die on it. They won't hire now due to the "defund" movement. These are bad times. OT will begrudgingly continue to be the norm.

I was one of those "Clinton" era hires and I don't really miss the city at all...Get yours and get out...

Stay safe...

Not really. Any meaningful changes will need to go thru numerous steps, like dealing with the consent decree, dealing with the SAFE-T act, etc. Will not happen. A DNC convention like 1968? No. The police will be on a tight leash, so will the Soros protestors and the fake news will not report anything damaging to the DNC.

It’s very dangerous to force so much overtime on men and women in law enforcement. You have to be mentally and physically alert at all times. Split second decisions can cause an officer to be injured.
If injured because of exhaustion, file a law suit.
Or prevent an injury, call off sick, reason physically exhausted from forced overtime.
Is CPD allowing enough time for breaks to rest, eat, bathroom breaks?
I doubt it.

"Think about all the money the city is saving"?

Think about all of OUR paid taxes being squandered on the massive scams that our city, county and state governments are, and have been, pulling for decades.

All done under the cover of 'doing the will of the people' per having 'won' election to their relevant thrones.

The most potent effect of this century's communication technologies is, and has been, exposing humans to their true natures.

So true is that quote, "We have met the enemy and it is us."

Though, the new century's modification of this is, " We have let the enemas make shit slurry of us all."

For $300,000,000 you can hire 3,000 coppers @ $100,000/yr.

So if you bring a cop on the force for $100K "all in" including pension contributions, benefits, and training, then you could theoretically have zero OT...

We all know that won't be the case - shit happens, you need to have OT. But it'd likely be that response times would be improved, morale would improve because coppers wouldn't be worked to exhaustion and could get some time with the families on a regular basis, and crime would be reduced.

Oh well, nice pipe dream. Can't have shorter response times, better morale, or reduced crime in a blue shithole...

Sit down, little squirrel, it can absolutely be done. Want to know who does it? The guy/gal driving the 2002 Toyota Corolla to work. Not the guy driving the brand new $90K+ vehicle. The guy who didn't buy a $450K house but bought a $200K house and did the improvements himself, then when his tax return came in he sunk every dollar on the principle. That IOD that sent him to surgery and kept him off 8 months? Yeah, that hella huge tax return went on it too.

When he had enough equity he felt solid on that house and had a pay off plan, he started looking for an escape place. A place not in Chicago, where sirens bring everyone outside to see what is going on. He didn't buy the biggest and the best, he bought what he could afford.

This is the guy who got into deferred comp in the academy. This is the gal that doesn't have fake nails and eyelashes because she knows it's a waste of money and she knows her husband/boyfriend/girlfriend will fuck her even without them. This is the guy that drives the rattiest vehicle in the parking lot because he doesn't need a Jeep, truck, BMW, Mercedes, etc to prove how big his dick is, he knows. It's the couple that doesn't have matching furniture throughout their home because function is more important than fashion.

Call bullshit all you want....and keep buying all the unnecessary shit and you will never be any better off than you are today. A $300K mortgage can be paid off in less than 6 years. I know, I've done it. And I may not have $1M in deferred comp yet, but I'm not far off. 18 years on, retiring at 20+suspension time, because I can. Two houses paid off, no CC debt, nothing. Just because there is money in the bank, doesn't mean you get to spend it. Get your shit together, and if you don't know how, ask the guy/gal driving the shittiest car in the lot, they might know.
