An air-quality alert and excessive heat watch have been issued for the Chicago area in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service.
The air-quality alert, triggered by residual wildfire smoke from Canada, starts at midnight Saturday and extends through the end of the day Sunday, the weather service said. Meteorologist Brett Borchardt said it’s likely it will be extended through the end of Tuesday when the excessive heat watch ends.
“Heat waves and poor air quality go hand in hand,” Borchardt told the Sun-Times on Saturday afternoon, noting that high humidity and stagnant masses of hot air can worsen the air quality.
It's mid-August. This happens almost every year. In fact, it's kind of big news when it doesn't happen.
Anyone remember August 2023, a mere year ago? We do:
- 22 August - 88 degrees
- 23 August - 97 degrees
- 24 August - 100 degrees
It was mid to high 80s most of last August with a couple 90s sprinkled in.
So today's high of 86 degrees was actually an improvement. Climate change is over! Kamala saved the world! Maybe she can run a campaign on that?

I’ve got one of those smart devices and it was flashing a weather alert. So it said “Excessive Heat” along with the air quality. When I asked the device “what’s the temperature tomorrow?” Thinking 99, 100- it says 88…wtf. It’s August and I’m old. I grew up remembering 100 degree days many times over throughout the summer. 88? That’s like perfect weather for those that like summer.

Well, we do have air conditioning now vs. the 1960's, when I grew up, with a fan. And you know, it was hot & humid, back then too. Factories, now all moved overseas, belched out soot, as did the buses and trucks. Somehow, we all lived!!!!
One year ago the Mayor handed out frozen pizza to kids after school, it was 95 degrees, nuff said.

1988 ended up only the 10th warmest summer. Around 600 people died in the mid July heat wave, making this the deadliest weather event in Chicago history. Humidity was extremely high with dew point temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s. The hottest day was July 13. Basically, that year, from June 23 to Aug. 3, it was at least 100 degrees or hotter. Twenty-nine heat records were broken that year.

When I was a kid you could enjoy some good cigarettes, ride in a car without a seatbelt, eat as many carcinogens as they could stuff into the food, spend all day outside in the scorching sun without someone telling you that you had to put on sunscreen, and throw lawn darts at each other.
