Numbers Creeping Up
This is the trouble when you brag about crime reduction numbers. April had twenty homicides total, the lowest in recent memory. Chicago is one-third of the way through May and has already racked up a dozen:
A man was fatally shot Friday afternoon in Lawndale on the West Side. The man, 32, was on the sidewalk in the 3800 block of West Arthington Street when someone approached him and fired shots about 2:20 p.m., Chicago police said.
A man was shot and killed in South Lawndale early Saturday, police said. The man, 36, was in the 2100 block of South Fairfield Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when someone in a gray sedan fired shots, according to Chicago police.
Two people were killed and one wounded in a shooting early Saturday in Edgewater, police said. The three victims — a 28-year-old man, a 31-year-old man and a 36-year-old man — were in the 6300 block of North Broadway about 1:20 a.m. when someone fired shots, Chicago police said.
The west side is always the west side as the first two articles show.
The double is in 020, a District notable for having perhaps three homicides most years. (correction - 024. can you tell we didn't get north much?)
Trends should be noted year over year, not week by week, because one bad month can f#$% up everything.

024
Probably not the first to point it out , but 024 not 020 for the double. Also, we’re not even halfway through 2025. It’s extremely plausible 020 could cough up something out of their ordinary.
The homicides are random. With most of the weekends with crappy weather. Wait for the nice weekend weather and see what happens.
As long as the numbers keep moving up it’s a positive
The double was in 024 not 020.
but there has been a decrease with the increase as we have been unburdened by what has been thanks to those yellow school buses
Keep me line moving.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
6300 n Broadway is in 024
Heating up this week. Batting average will go up.
Just for the record the double was in 24. Include another one around the corner a couple weeks ago.
I love how Conehead and Snelling proudly took credit for the decrease in the increase, yet did absolutely nothing to earn or deserve that credit. No policies were implemented, and no changes in policing strategy were made. Not a one.
With the recent post about mental health, just wanted to throw this out there. There ARE some good bosses left on the department. I work for one now. It can make all the difference. I worked for miserable pricks that made my time at work horrible. I hated coming in every single day. Now, work is still work, but it’s so much better. I was always hesitant to transfer districts or go to a different watch, but what do u have to lose? If you’re struggling and working for a shit boss, make the move. It can change your whole life. I now have a much better outlook on the job and my mood is much more positive. My home life is way better because I’m not coming home complaining and miserable all the time. Just wanted to throw that out there.
April had 20 homicides: See April Wrap-up. https://heyjackass.com/enlightening-commentary/
You are correct! The other day, I posted on bad-good bosses. On my last day, I went to see the head of the company (at his request.) We talked 40 minutes. Nice, good, human talk. Told him, "you have some HORRIBLE bosses!" His answer: "I know, but getting rid of them..." though he did make it bad by demoting some, closing departments.
Please... Please... More hood rat dirt naps please!
In most places being a cop, or better a firefighter, is still not a good job, but a great job. Sounds to me, a long retired cop, that the problems that you CPD coppers face are both a combination of poor leadership on all levels and hostile relationships with the political and so called community. Why do you stay in this self-described hell hole? Leave for another department, if for no other reason, as described by this officer, your mental health. Go to some place where cops are appreciated, a place with good schools, a pension fund that is going to ensure your retirement. I know that there is a certain cachet, much like being a former SEAL, Ranger or Marine, that comes with being a big city cop, but is it worth throwing away your life and the happiness and welfare of your family?
Thanks! Don't wanna fuck up the index!
NEVER be afraid to make a move. Do what's right for yourself. I knew guys that didn't take offers because they had a good partner. When their partner took an offer and left these guys behind they would bitch that they got left behind. ALWAYS do what's best for yourself.
Every time a mayor and the bosses on this department talk about a “reduction in homicides”, another angel gets their wings.
Usually it’s a kid, or a good mass shooting.
The double was two rappers from O'Block, so basically a Parkway Gardens hit on the north side.
Word is a drop was made on 5, in or near Risk Mgmt. Response imminent. Bed bugs rampant.
Retired here...thats good advice. If I did things over, I would follow bosses around more. I always told them I would miss them, and wished them luck. Now, I would try and go work for them if at all possible. They are few and far between. Why we stay and work for horrible people and let them shit all over us is anybodys guess. Must be those "Chicago values" ingrained in our virtues.
Good to hear
There is an uptick in crime coming with the warm weather and no one is ready for it. We don’t have any of our past units available to direct enforce criminal behavior and to many vacancy’s are going unfilled . How maybe have retired just this year? We started off the year with 1900 people short.
We have CAPS officers to take the lead on how to hug a thug..
OT: I don’t want to be a whistleblower but if you coppers saw the crop we have in the academy right now… it’s bad. Very bad. They don’t have the police look or respect. They’re constantly late and always have excuses, never their fault. They fail the power test frequently, mostly the run. They are allergic to accountability but what’s worse, they act as if they’re entitled to graduate and lose their probation status. Some of these recruits have multiple SPARs already and they’ve only completed a few months. Those write ups are after many reprimands but the disrespect and failing continued to official write ups. Instructors have given up, not that the instructors were ever top notch coppers themselves. Brass don’t care, get them to pass the state exam and send them out to the district. To use their language “we’re cooked” as a department.
Warm weather is just around the corner...Let the self-cleaning oven cycle begin. Like an earlier poster said, the city has no policies or plans in place. The homicide rate is a crap shoot. If it goes higher they will just lie about it and say it is down. IF it goes down they will take credit for it. The local news media wont question anything, and the sheeple will believe whatever they hear.
Working for a good boss helps,
But co-workers do stupid sh!t to make the good bosses bitter and less generous,
A good boss bit in the a$$ a few times will change quickly to cover that a$$ and pension
All this mental health non-sense. Stop it already, you softies.
What are the Over/ Under for upcoming Memorial Day 3- Day Weekend?
I
I have always felt that "The Academy" worked too hard to ghraduate as many PPO's as possible. They should fire the worst early on to make an example and tell the others that "They arent going to make it either"...

Can you reveal what boss you work for, maybe if that bosses unit gets flooded with par forms to transfer in maybe the sup will realize he has a true leader in his ranks and place that boss in as the 1st, chief of one of the bureaus that would have the most impact for the department. This department is in desperate need of true leadership to turn the morale around. If they polled the department members anonymously, I would venture to guess that the majority of the department dreads coming to work every day because of poor leadership and the department being dictated by civilians who think they know better than us but yet have never done our job
Then FIRE THEM!
If they’re a turd, flush it.
Then not likely a great boss. Maybe just a fair one looking out for his own welfare. Good leaders dont let their nature change because of a few bad eggs. They learn and go on. I never liked at how this department pulls a knee jerk reaction and punishes the entire classroom for one or two problematic students. That worked in boot camp, but not here in the real world. Morale would be better served if everyone saw that the rules and regs were being applied evenly. Im not going to keep towing the line if I am going to be punished for others trangressions.
For some reason there are a lot of killings on the West and South sides. I'm beginning to see a pattern.

D. Tracy
