Chicagoans may have to prepare for higher property taxes, with the city facing a $1 billion deficit. The city's chief financial officer told Bloomberg that a property tax increase was likely due to the budget crisis
The mayor is downplaying the idea of raising property taxes, which is not a surprise because no politician wants to talk about hiking taxes unless and until they have no other choice. And given the pushback from the City Council last year, it's setting the stage for a major budget battle this fall.
The mayor lost a bitter battle over raising property taxes last year when the projected budget deficit was not as bad as the one he is now facing. And it may not get any better during this upcoming budget season.
That $250 million Conehead spent on illegals would fully cover a quarter of this shortfall.
So would stopping crap like this:
Two affordable housing buildings are set to rise on the former site of the Robert Taylor Homes in Bronzeville, transforming an area that has long been a symbol of the city’s past policy failures on public housing.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, speaking Wednesday at a groundbreaking for the $40 million, 52-unit project, said the two-building project — called Legends South A3 — will help the area move beyond the legacy of disinvestment that left spaces vacant.
[...] The $40.8 million project is funded by $10 million in reallocated tax increment financing funds, $2.9 million in HOME funds, $1.5 million in low-income housing tax credits from the Department of Housing and the Department of Planning and Development, and $7.5 million from the CHA.
$40 million.
52 units in two buildings.
That's over $760,000 per unit. Granted, part of it is for surrounding infrastructure improvements, but no one want to be there when the Taylor Homes were there. No one has been begging to move there since. And next year's budget is already short a Billion dollars.
How about reining in spending first?

Along with all the social and economic indicators Chicago’s bond rating will take another hit under the leadership of Mayor BJ. Detroit on the Lake Front is coming sooner than many of us would like.
The police department is going to get the brunt of the cuts. There’s not going to be any promotions for years. Damn what the consent decree says. There’s no money for it.
There’s no reason for a detectives test to be scheduled for Q4 with A.) the budget in shambles and B.) the last test only given a few years ago.

The city built a new firehouse at O'Hare a few years ago. Of course there were all kinds of problems with it when the firemen moved in. But, when I heard the final price tag was close to $20 million dollars, my jaw dropped. If I built a house for myself for $20 million, it could look like the mansion on Downton Abbey. A firehouse basically is just an apparatus floor for the engine and truck, a kitchen, and sleeping quarters. The airlines paid a good chuck of that $20 million, but $20 million for that?

Don't look now ladies and gentlemen but our Pension Fund just hire a former member to a newly created position of Deputy Executive Director to the tune of $120.000.00 a year. This position is brand new. The fund has not ever had a Deputy Executive Director in its history. In addition, the person hired was voted out of his position for the elected members of the Pension Fund. In addition, in today's CPD 911 Notifications blog post there is a very interesting article that goes into the fact that the City of Chicago's Safety Pension only has $6 billion in assets for $68 billions in payouts. The real problem that the City of Chicago is facing is, how are pensioners of the funds going to be paid? As of today, the Police Pension Fund is approximately 23% funded. We are in trouble. And please don't say our pensions are guaranteed, they are not. It is too bad that the current FOP Leadership has done nothing to help us retirees. The Retirees don't hear nothing from the current FOP Leadership along also from the elected Police Officials that sit on the Pension Board regarding the state of our pension fund. Since the new Retiree Elected Official was voted in for the voice of the Retirees, he has not said one word or address this issue. Ladies and Gentlemen, it not if we are going to go bankrupt, it when.
